Meet Molly - Improving!

Molly is one of the friendliest cats we have ever had in the rescue! Tyson's Place Animal Rescue specializes in assisting terminally ill with finding new families for their pets. Molly's elderly owner loved Molly so much that she "fed her meals", and Molly ended up extremely overweight. A concerned hospice nurse contacted us after her owner passed away, wanting to keep Molly out of a shelter.

Molly had a full exam at our vet and has been diagnosed with diabetes. Our first order of business was regulating her blood sugar as she felt awful. We got her started on insulin twice a day, and she was a great patient. In fact, she actually purred when the needle went in because she was just so excited to be around people. The good news is that her diabetes is reversible! If she can drop the extra pounds, she will no longer have a diabetes diagnosis. In fact, now that we measure out her food and choose a careful high protein, low carb diet for her, she no longer needs insulin.

Molly has lost 2.5 pounds in the last 5 months, but she has 5 more pounds to go. She needed a little more encouragement to exercise, so we enrolled her in a vet-guided weight loss rehab program where she walks on an underwater treadmill. She managed 5 whole minutes on her first try. Check out the photos for proof! We also added a short obstacle course for her to tackle on her way to her food bowl, which you will see in the photos. Although cat napping is still her favorite, she is a happy-go-lucky cat and works with us (or maybe tolerates us?) helping her on her weight loss journey.

Molly needs an owner who is committed to helping her lose weight (currently 20 pounds - goal weight is 15 pounds). Her obesity has made it impossible to clean herself. She is also front declawed, which means she has to carry a lot of weight on her tiny front paws, resulting in her shoulders jutting out when she walks. If she doesn't drop the pounds, she will have arthritis in her tiny front paws.

We are working hard to improve her quality of life. We realize that finding an adopter for a diabetic, overweight cat is going to be tough, but Molly deserves a second chance at life. She is so so sweet - she loves to be brushed, rub on your legs, and get attention. Her number one goal in life is to be with her person.

Molly is only 8 years old and is fixed, declawed, current on vaccinations, and microchipped. She has had full blood work and is healthy. Recent blood work shows that her glucose levels are right where they should be, so she continues to just need a special diet and no insulin.
