Luna *diabetic, special needs*'s Story

***Luna is a sweetheart whose true desire is to be with his person/people whenever possible. However, having spent his entire life with brother Leo and now in a foster home full of other cats and kittens, Luna must have a cat companion in his new forever home, so he can have both feline and human love to complete his world.

Luna and Leo are brothers who were adopted as kittens 7 years ago and lived with the same family until recently. The life they had was perhaps not ideally suited to them, as they were surrounded by very young children whose constant noise and frenetic activity were overwhelming stressors. They hid in the basement for most of the day, and had less human interactions as a result. Luna developed diabetes, and is currently stable on twice daily insulin therapy. Both cats should definitely have more exercise and play time to shed a few pounds, and get back on the health track as many of us should do too!

It’s a testament to their resilience and sweet nature that the boys are thriving in foster care, where there are other cats and kitten but no stress from children. They are super affectionate, greet every person entering the room as their best friend with rubbings and head butts to show their happiness. They are so docile the foster was able to bathe them to improve their coat quality, and she speculates that they are well on the way to becoming lap cats when given a stable environment and people to love.

Despite being diabetic, Luna remains a gentle, loving and sweet cat who accepts his twice daily insulin injections with good grace, and seems to be doing well now that he is much less stressed. The foster was able to test his glucose level with a glucometer, and Luna doesn’t even mind the tiny ear pricks needed for the readings. A total sweetheart he is! Luna should be on a high protein, low carb diet, preferably wet food, which will help to control the glucose level as well.

As they spend more time in foster and interacting with other adult cats and young kittens, it seems that Luna and Leo would do quite well with the company of other cats and not necessarily each other’s. Luna is hoping to join a family of loving people and friendly cats, where he will have a quiet and calm space. He is very much looking forward to peace, love and a lot of bonding time to snuggle up close to his favourite person. If you are experienced with diabetic cats, and wish to support this gentle kitty in his quest for a healthy, balanced life, Luna would be so grateful and happy to repay you with many head butts and kisses! We can’t help them all, but we can help when we can, one cat at a time.

Would you like to make Luna a part of your family? Please complete our online application found at: https://www.avacats.org/adoption-application-form.

Our adoption fees cover vetting and include spay/neuter, vaccines (initial FVRCP and rabies), flea treatment, two dewormings and microchipping.

Adoption fee is $200 for Luna. Please note that fees may apply for additional required vaccinations (at $75 per booster) due prior to adoption. Total adoption fees will be confirmed by the AVA Adoption Coordinator.
