Meet Helen
Helen is available for foster only at this time. She will be going to an eye specialist soon to determine the extent of her injuries and potential need for additional treatment. Fostering means she can go home, get settled in and comfortable, get all the love and pets! ARC will cover transportation and payment for her vet visits, and provide medications and supplies as needed.
Helen was found in the woods behind a neighborhood and was scared, malnourished and had some injuries. Her eyes were both badly discolored, swollen and it appeared she was blind. In an effort to save her eyes, she was rushed to the vet and put on meds. After treatment, her eyes look much better and we don't think they are causing her any pain or discomfort, but she is still blind.
She is an absolute sweetheart and LOVES human interactions. She likes to be spoken to in a soft voice, get and give affection and is an excellent snuggler! It doesn't take her long to figure out her environment, being blind does not hinder her in mobility. She likes to perch at the window, get up on the bed and will find her nearest person for some pets and snuggles! She has no issues finding and using her litter box, and she is on it when it comes to feeding time!
Unfortunately, Helen probably endured some trauma by another cat (or multiple cats), she is terrified when she senses another kitty in her area. Her foster family is working with her, but so far she does seems way too stressed out in the presence of another cat, even super laid back kitties who are very seasoned in integrating new foster kitties into the home. We will continue to work with her, but it will be slow as to not cause more trauma, but for now, Helen needs to be in an only-kitty home. She would also do best in a home with no children or older children who can understand boundaries, move slowly with her and respect the space she needs to settle into a new environment.
She does however enjoy hanging out with her foster dog brother, he is large, but laid back and is respectful of her space. She approaches him and they do wonderful together!
Helen recently went to the vet eye specialist and we learned that she is in fact completely blind. Her blindness comes from some sort of trauma, thought maybe to be buckshot or pellet wounds. She will have both eyes removed to eliminate any chance of post-traumatic sarcoma (cancer). This will not change her wonderful purrsonality, it may reduce any current discomfort she may feel from pressure or other issues from the scarring and trauma to her eyes.
At the end of the day, Helen is a very laid back kitty who just wants to love and be loved by her human family! Interested in meeting Helen? Fill out a foster contract on our website, http://animalrefugecenter.org/. Have questions about Helen? Hit the inquiry button and we'll be in touch!
