Meet Hazel

Sweet, sad Hazel arrived at the shelter in early May, pregnant, and six weeks later unfortunately suffered a miscarriage of the lone kitten she was carrying. She was very sad at first to find herself in a shelter cage, but soon came to understand we meant her no harm, and rather that we meant to provide her with as much love as we could during her pregnancy and stay at the shelter. She came out of her shell, enjoying all the attention and treats she received from her volunteers, and even enjoyed chatting with us occasionally. After she was spayed and moved into the adoptable cat room we were able to hold her and love her, which she really enjoys even if she is a bit timid. She also enjoys sitting on a lap. She was adopted for a few weeks by an elderly woman with no other pets, but Hazel hid under the couch, making it difficult for the woman to bring her out of hiding and give her the hands-on love she needs to adapt to a new home. She’s not at all difficult to handle, but whomever adopts her should know that she will need time to adjust to a new home, and will need to be able to prevent her from hiding. The more hands-on affection she gets, the sooner she will forget the time she spent in a shelter cage.

She is good with other cats, and we think having another cat in the home will make her come out of her shell much more quickly, as we have seen it at the shelter. She is very submissive to other cats, just wanting their companionship. We can’t say for sure if she would like living with a dog — she’s cautious about the shelter dog she sees through the glass door of the cat room, so perhaps it’s best if she go to a home that does not have dogs. She should enjoy the attention of older children in their tweens and teens who understand she just needs affection, but younger children might be too active for her. She would probably prefer a quieter home, one with people who will provide her with all the love she deserves, and another kitty for a companion.

Hazel is estimated to be 4 years old, is spayed, box-trained, current on vaccinations, tested negative for FIV and feline leukemia, and received de-wormers and flea treatments. Adoption fee is $50. Fee may be paid by credit card or money order, payable to “Town of Scituate.” Personal checks are accepted from R.I. residents only, and no cash is accepted.
