Meet Gracie
Sweet Sweet Momma Gracie. This little lady came into our rescue in June 2022. Heavily Pregnant and barely alive, Gracie's foster home has taken amazing care of her over the last few months.
Gracie came to NALA Rescue with matted hair all over her body, skin infection everywhere, eye infection, ear infection, and her toenails had grown into her pads. She couldn't see out of one eye because it was so infected, full of worms, she had a horrible case of ear mites, broken teeth, and was about 6 weeks pregnant.
To add salt to her wounds, she was dehydrated, her kidney levels were at a critical high level, her White Blood Count was 44,700, and she tested positive for FIV.
We did not know if Gracie was going to survive, let alone any of her kittens. Gracie came in with a "Body Score" of 1. A Body Score is a scale that ranges from 1-5 (1 being deathly and 5 being super healthy) that veterinarians use to judge the overall health of an animal. Is her body shutting down? Are her kittens still alive inside her? We HAD TO TRY!!!!!!!
Heavily Pregnant Gracie was admitted to the animal hospital. An IV was placed and fluids/medications were started. Did we find her in time? Can we save her? Are her babies still alive? We questioned everything, she was so weak.
But then........ Three Days later...... Gracie came to life!!!!!!!!!!! Eating everything in sight, gaining weight, and starting meowing at us! Then BOOM, Gracie went into labor.
Nine hours later, and with Four Healthy Newborn Kittens, Gracie was purring in a dresser drawer with her babies. The next couple of months were filled with ups and downs. Gracie couldn't maintain weight, her WBC fluctuated from 25k-32k. We had to be careful of what medications we gave her because she was nursing her litter.
September comes along, and all four of her babies are healthy and have been adopted. Time to amp our game up on Gracie! More blood tests, xrays, stronger antibiotics, but we were still at square one....... Skin Infection, High WBC, unable to maintain weight.
Mid-October, we had to make the difficult decision to attempt to spay her........ Does she have ovarian cancer? Is there a petrified Fetus inside of her? WHY is she so sick?? We needed to take a look inside to see what we were dealing with.....
Pyometra, Cystic Ovaries, and a torn uterine wall. How is this girl still alive? Gracie left the animal hospital three days later, and has finally started to act like a cat!!!!!!!
November 28, 2022- Gracie went to the vet for a final check up, SHE WILL BE OKAY!!!!!!!!!!! Because Gracie is FIV Positive, she will forever have a weakened immune system, and that is mostly noticed in her eyes. Her eyes weep, and she will always need to have an antibiotic eye medication everyday, just one drop to her eyes every day and she will be able to maintain her eye health.
Also, a good quality food is a MUST for Gracie. This does not have to be the most expensive food on the market, however she needs to be fed a diet that is free of fillers, full of quality ingredients, and has the vitamins and minerals she needs to stay healthy. (NO Meow Mix, NO Kit N Kaboodle, NO Cat Chow).
Since her Vet Visit on Monday, We are loving how well her coat is coming in. Soft and Soon to be Fluffy! Gracie is gentle, kind, sweet, and very laid back. Because she is FIV Positive, this can ONLY be given to other cats through bite wounds. Humans cannot get FIV, Dogs cannot get FIV, and Cats would need to have been severely bitten by the cat to contract FIV.
Do you have a calm home for Gracie? Her Favorite this in the whole world is to nest on your feet so they stay warm.
