FREYA DOMESTIC SHORT HAIR DILUTE TIGER ARRIVED 5/23/20 CHIPPED FEMALE AS OF 9/01/20 5LBS 3OZ FIVE-MONTHS-OLD

***PANLEUKOPENIA POSITIVE AS A KITTEN...PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR VET BEFORE INQUIRIING ABOUT ADOPTION***

Freya and her buddies (the "Viking Kittens" and the "Coffee Kittens") are finally healthy enough to go home!!! Like so many other cats these two litters of kittens started out life as part of an accidental litter. Astrid and her Viking Kitten friends were picked up out of state by some folks who wanted free kittens. Although they saw that these kitten's living conditions weren't the best they decided to take home six kittens. On the ride home they realized that the kittens weren't just tired and that they had a litter of sick kittens (fleas/upper respiratory infection/ocular discharge) on their hands. They immediately posted that they needed help on Facebook and a local cat rescuer took the kittens in so that they could receive vet care. The kittens were placed in a foster home immediately who unfortunately let them interact with their cats and another litter of 5 kittens ("Coffee Kittens") that they were fostering. Needless to say, all of the kittens quickly became ill and all were surrendered to Elmore SPCA for prompt vet care and supportive care while under treatment.
These kittens tested positive for panleukopenia which is a big deal. Fortunately, we were able to diagnose this almost immediately and due to our strict isolation, cleaning and disinfecting protocols it was contained and not spread throughout our shelter. We were able to save three out of the six kittens from the "Viking Kittens" litter and three out of five kittens from the "Coffee Kittens" litter. Panleukopenia can kill a kitten very quickly. No matter how much medicine, subcutaneous fluids, good nutrition, supplements and TLC we gave their little bodies just couldn't heal. It has been a long hard road for them and for the team here at Elmore, but Astrid, Freya and Loki from the Viking kittens and Espresso, Frappe and Mocha from the Coffee kittens are now vetted, healthy and are ready to go home.
*Panleukopenia is extremely contagious and is spread easily to other cats AND can stay in an environment for years! Please contact your veterinarian to inquire about adopting a cat or kitten who has tested positive!*
Some information to consider...
"Transmission of the panleukopenia virus occurs either through direct contact between cats or through contact with “fomites,” common surfaces where the bug can survive for a year or more. Litter boxes, food bowls, cages, and hands are all fomites, and infected cats can shed the virus through vomit, feces, and other bodily secretions. Proper scrubbing and disinfection can help ensure that the virus will not be passed on to other cats through contaminated items." HSUS
and...
"Vaccination and meticulous disinfection are the best ways to prevent the spread of the panleukopenia virus. While many shelters like to use quaternary ammonium compounds for routine disinfection, experts say the only foolproof way to kill the panleukopenia virus is to apply a dilute bleach solution (1 part bleach to 32 parts water) to food bowls, litter pans, cages, and other surfaces during cleaning. Whenever possible, those items should be made of stainless steel; plastic food bowls and litter pans are too difficult to disinfect after repeated use. Requiring staff, volunteers, and visitors to wash hands before and after the handling of each animal can also reduce the spread of disease." HSUS

Freya is very loving and engaging. She is always game for attention, but she can also self soothe. She is very approachable and is eager to meet new people. Like her pals Astrid and Loki, she is used to dogs and other cats! Freya is gorgeous and she has a wonderful personality. She enjoys playing with her toys, her pals and anything that has feathers! Freya, like all of her buddies have tested negative for FeLV/FIV, are current on their distemper and rabies vaccinations, are chipped, have been treated for any parasites and are now spayed and neutered.

These kittens deserve a chance in a loving and responsible home. Due to their rough start they may require more vetting than the average cat and may have flare ups of upper respiratory or eye infections. Or, they may have no flare ups, but we feel it always best to err on the side of caution. Please note none of these kittens would be able to be re-homed to families who have any pets who are susceptible to illness. We ask that even if all your cats are healthy and vaccinated you consult with a veterinarian before inquiring about adopting any of the Viking and or Coffee kittens!
We are available to show the pets to approved applicants and by appointment only. Available appointment times fill up quickly so please visit our website and follow the instructions regarding visits and adoption practices.
