Meet Fletcher: RIP 11/12/19

11/12/19 My heart is breaking. Fletcher passed away. I found him Tuesday morning. He had been great. No health issues at all. He even ate his favorite wet cat food for supper the night before. He was always very loving. Fletcher loved to be petted. His favorite was time in the window soaking up the sunshine. It was a shock to find him on the floor all stretched out and not moving. I petted him and hoped he was just in a deep sleep. But I could tell he was gone.

I spent all of Tuesday crying. Still quite depressed today. I did take him to our vet and they going to cremate him for me. The vet tech did mention it is possible he had a heart attack. It would have been a quick death and no one would even had known it was coming. She felt he had maine coon in him since he was so large and fluffy. She said heart issues can be common in that breed.

My daughters were devastated when they come home from school and I explained what happened. Fostering can be hard on the heart. All of us loved him so much. He had such a kind and gentle nature.

I am glad we decided to foster Fletcher. He loved it here. I still can't believe this is real. Rest in peace, our sweet sweet fluffy boy, Fletcher.

Fletcher's owner in Arlington, Iowa, passed away. So Fletcher is a WPR kitty now and living in a foster home. Fletcher is up to date on shots, neutered, and tested negative for FeLV. But he tested positive for FIV.

Fletcher is about 5-years-old as of August 2017. He had the best care after his owner found him. His owner loved him dearly and made sure he saw a vet each year for shot updates and a wellness check. He's a very friendly, loving, and affectionate cat with long, soft fur. He gets along well with other cats and dogs.

Here is info on FIV. Fletcher can live with other cats that do not have FIV as long as he does not bite them, he cannot transfer the FIV to them. Or if you also have a cat with FIV, if set up properly and given time, they could possibly become friends.

FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus)

Both FIV and FeLV are called "retroviruses" because of the way that they replicate, or multiply, inside the cat's body. FIV is further classified as a lentivirus, or "slow virus."

An FIV-positive cat may live for many years. However, the virus eventually weakens the immune system, which limits the cat's ability to protect itself against other infections or illnesses. Periods of relatively good health may be interspersed with recurrent illnesses.

FIV is spread primarily through bite wounds. The virus is transmitted via the saliva of an FIV-positive cat when it bites deep into the tissue of another cat. It is therefore commonly found in tomcats as they fight for territory and mates. Casual, non-aggressive contact does NOT spread the virus. The virus cannot survive for more than a few hours when exposed to air. Therefore, an FIV-positive cat CAN live in a house with non-infected cats if they are all on friendly terms and don't fight with each other. Sharing food and water bowls, litter pans, and even grooming each other will NOT spread the virus.

If acquired during adulthood, a cat with FIV can live a long, full life, and many do. However, the weakened immune system can lead to recurrent or chronic conditions such as inflammation of the gums and mouth, skin, urinary, or upper respiratory infections, weight loss, anemia, persistent diarrhea, and cancer.

Will someone please adopt Fletcher and give him a forever home? $95 adoption fee.

WE ARE A NO-KILL 501-C-3 NON-PROFIT RESCUE. All donations are tax deductible. We do not have a shelter. All pets live in foster homes. We only adopt to indoor homes. All animals see a vet for shots and normal exams. If they appear healthy and there are no obvious health concerns, then extensive testing is not done. This is normal procedure for pet rescues and shelters.
Waverly Pet Rescue puts a lot of money into medical care for each dog and cat we take in. $200 is the average cost for basic care. This does not include if the animal had an injury, required extra flea / ear mite treatments, or needed extra days at the vet office.
