Ben is now about 9-years-old as of February 2021.

Ben was an 8 week old stray kitten found in Waterloo, Iowa back in May of 2012 by a WPR volunteer. We did not have room and Cedar Bend Humane Society did so we transferred the kitten to CBHS. We work with this shelter here and there helping each other. Ben was adopted from the shelter into a home.

In June of 2017, Ben's home moved and did not take him with them. So they took him back at Cedar Bend Humane Society. This traumatized Ben really bad. Ben did not do well there at all. He was hurt and confused to lose his home. To lose who he thought was his family. He was acting out and is extremely confrontational in his kennel. After a month of trying all they could with Ben, he was not settling down and they still could not even handle him. He was not an adoption candidate, so they asked me if Waverly Pet Rescue would like to have him back.

In July of 2017, I went and picked Ben up from the shelter after they transferred him back to Waverly Pet Rescue. This poor cat was so upset. I had to keep him in a cage to start. He would hiss, spit, and leap at me whenever I went near him. Even to open up his cage to feed him.

I let him be and gave him space. I talked to him all the time and sent him love. I also cried for him.

In November 2017 is when Ben decided he could trust me. He stopped lunging at me. Then he stopped hissing and growling and spitting. I smiled at him. And he meowed at me. I cried again but this time from happiness.

It is now February 2018, Ben is the sweetest boy ever to me. He also loves my older daughters, they are 13 and 11. They are very experienced with cats and know how to read them. Ben loves to be petted. He would let you rub on his head all day long if you had time. He has the best meow ever. He hisses now if new people come over. Takes him time to warm up to anyone new.

Ben went to the vet for shot updates and a check up. He did awesome! I was with him the whole time during his exam. I think as long as he could see me, he knew he did not have to be scared or afraid. He did not hiss even once. I have figured out he hisses because he is scared. I almost wonder if his home hurt him sometimes and that also caused him trauma.

Ben is a love once he gets to know you. It will take lots of time in a new home for Ben. He must be started off either in a cage or a room alone. He will need space and time to adjust. And I do not mean an hour for time. I mean days, weeks, even months. He must have an experienced cat owner. And I do not mean a friendly experienced cat owner. I mean someone that has helped a scared or shy cat come around with time, love, and lots of patience.

I have not had Ben around other cats yet so I do not know how he would be. I will update this if I decide to give it a try. Ben has not been around dogs. I do not have dogs so I have no idea how he will be. No children in the home, young or older. He has never bit us but I would not want to risk it with children.

He is the coolest markings ever! He is up to date on shots, tested negative for FeLV / FIV, and neutered. He came to us all 4 paw declawed. His previous owner did that to him.

3/5/19 UPDATE: Ben loves other cats! He does great with every cat he has ever met. Ben is very loving and friendly now. He feels safe and loved and he has blossomed into a great cat. We are confident he can adjust to a new home once adopted. It will just take lots of time.

Ben's adoption fee is $95.00.

WE ARE A NO-KILL 501-C-3 NON-PROFIT RESCUE. All donations are tax deductible. We do not have a shelter. All pets live in foster homes. We only adopt to indoor homes. To see an animal, you must fill out an application first and then once approved, we can set up for you to meet the animal you are interested in. We do background checks on all applicants. If you have assault, domestic abuse, or drug charges please do not apply. If you have questions, please send an email to waverlypetrescue@mchsi.com

All animals see a vet for shots and normal exams. If they appear healthy and there are no obvious health concerns, then extensive testing is not done. This is normal procedure for pet rescues and shelters.
Waverly Pet Rescue puts a lot of money into medical care for each dog and cat we take in. $200 is the average cost for basic care. This does not include if the animal had an injury, required extra flea / ear mite treatments, or needed extra days at the vet office.
