Pit Bull Mom: The best way to start my day

My dog, Gus, sleeps in the bed with me every night. I know that not all people are OK with dogs on the bed or on the furniture, after all, my parents were really opposed to it and still are, but it’s my house and my rules and I’m fine with it. Now, this doesn’t mean that Gus sleeps at the foot of the bed, all curled into a ball. He may start out that way, but throughout the night, he migrates closer to the head of the bed, and usually manages to make his way under the covers, and then slowly spreads out, until eventually, I am curled into a ball. I could probably reclaim my space, but this has been going on for 6 years and I’m asleep anyway, so I’ll just deal with it. Gus is also the only dog in my home who has any interest in sleeping in. Everyone else is up at 5am and ready to go out. Gus has no interest in moving until 9am.

So, every morning, I get up at 5 and let everyone out, except Gus who is still happy and snug under the covers. While everyone else is out keeping my yard safe from squirrels, Gus and I have our one on one time. I usually get up and make breakfast for myself and bring it back to bed, where Gus waits ever sp patiently for me to finish and give him the last few crumbs off of my plate.

This is the morning routine. I have no idea why Gus gets this special treatment, but this is what we do, and that one on one bonding time is so special to me, and to Gus as well, and I wouldn’t give it up for the world.
