Boo Parrot Cockatoo Pittsburgh, PA

Boo is a sweet, loving boy who can be quite the showman. He is very animated and loves to entertain. He'll dance and sing along with you trying to learn the words of a song while at other times he may mumble softly to join into a conversation. We've heard him vocalize a few distingusihable phrases like "Hi Boo!", "I love you", and "I love Boo." Once he has establshed trust with you he may even "give kisses." Underneath all of the showmanship is a very shy parrot who is most comfortable when approached slowly with predictable movement, even for head scratches which he enjoys. He seems to prefer women over men and is uncomfortable around small children, which is understable given his preference for slow, predictable movement - something not typical of small children. We've also observed that Boo becomes nervous if a dog and cat is nearby - expressing his discomfort by making a hissing noise and puffing up his feathers. This is a common defense posture that many birds display when uncomfortable with a situation. He calms down when the dogs and/or cats are removed from the room. His foster home has dogs and cats that live in another part of the house and occaisionally will visit the bird room under supervision.

In general, cockatoos can be loud, active, stubborn birds and Boo is no exception. His foster mom shared that during the day Boo is typically quiet and softspoken keeping himself busy with toys and an occaisional nap. He enjoys hours of supervised out of cage time during the day as his fostermom works from home full time. His loud cockatoo vocalizations mainly occur in the evening during his nightly routine. Keep in mind it is common for parrots to call out to flockmates first thing in the morning and at the end of the day so this is not a surprising behavior.

Boo is a big thinker and creates his own puzzles. His foster mom nicknamed him "Boo the Builder" as he tries to fit pieces together from the wooden blocks that he enjoys chewing. Boo is an Umbrella Cocktatoo and as such will need an extra large cage, full of parrot friendly toys to occupy him and his intellect. He also loves attention and enjoys spending time in an outdoor aviary when weather permits. He is about as good as male cockatoos get. Boo has lived in a home with other parrots peacefully but he's never bonded or been housed in the same cage with them. He's also lived with dogs and cats. Previous cockatoo or larger bird experience is preferred, as Boo may test your skills especially when you are first getting to know him.
