I had been promised a cat from a friend's relative, but it didn't work out. Since I'd had my heart set on getting a cat, I checked out Petfinder. I came upon Simon who had been given up by his family and wasn't "showing his best side" and needed someone to "restore his faith in people". I instantly equated him with all of the foster children I worked with as a social worker who weren't showing their best sides at their foster homes because they were scared and sad. I made up my mind right there that Simon was the cat for me. When I met him, he bit the shelter worker and then jumped back in his cage when I tried to hold him. Talk about first impressions! But I had faith in Simon, and now I can't imagine my life without him. We made it through his litter box issues, and two and a half years later I couldn't be happier and I hope he feels the same! Now that he's comfortable, he's shown that the cat who bit the work and jumped out of my arms is really just a softy at heart. I hope our story encourages others to not just go on first impressions. Give these animals a chance. They are scared and sad and just want someone to love them!
