Exactly one year ago, my boyfriend and I drove up to Connecticut SPCA "just to look" and came home with the absolute light of our life. Her name had been decided months earlier as we sat at a brewpub in Oregon...Bucket...because she was number one on our bucket list we had made together. Bucket was never your typical dog...she had missed that crucial socialization period as a puppy - a result of severe neglect. She would allow no one but my boyfriend, myself, and my mother to touch her. The first day we brought her to the dog park she walked the entire length of the perimeter in between my legs. As of today, Bucket has hiked to the top of six of the Adirondack's High Peaks, spent many Sunday afternoons navigating Long Island sound on the bow of our sailboat in her pink polka dotted lifejacket, chased mommy and daddy down the side of a mountain on their skis in nearly a foot of fresh powder, gone camping in Maine, canoeing in Vermont, hiking in Tennessee, motor boating in Rhode Island, and somehow convinced an entire Starbucks staff to give her a free cup of whipped cream every time we go through the drive-thru. My boyfriend and I can only hope we give her half of the joy that she gives to us every second of every day. And to think this all started with a 2x2 inch picture on Petfinder.com ..
