Penny - A Petfinder Happy Tail

Penny - posted 11/04/2010

From Susan of Grasonville, MD

This past August, our wonderful rescue dog, Sonya, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, died of cancer. We'd had her for 8 years, and it broke our hearts when she died. I know the remedy for this kind of broken heart though, and that's to rescue another wonderful dog, and live happily with her for years. So, I went back to Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief and Rescue, and found Penny. She's 6.5 years old, and we're her fourth home. She lost the other three through no fault of her own; she was given away in two different divorces, the second time to a shelter, was rescued, and given to a family earlier this year. There were severe allergy problems this time, so Penny went on the road again. She's beautiful, affectionate, trained, and just a love. I can't imagine how anyone could have taken her to a shelter.

The wonderful people at CBRRR screened and screened us, then, bless their hearts, brought her from Illinois to Maryland for us (one of the rescuers was coming this way). She arrived and fit right in with our house hold with three adults, one 12-year-old, and one dynamite cat. She is a wonderful dog, and we tell her how pretty she is and how much we love her all the time. She tells us the same right back, in Penny Speak (low loud growling with tremendously vigorous tail wagging). She is Penny the Happy Dog. We know she doesn't understand it now, but we are her forever home - right on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. How cool is that?

We don't think she'd done much swimming before she came to us because a graceful swimmer she isn't, but she's very enthusiastic. She barks out of sheer exuberance as she swims. She forgets all about the ball we've thrown and wants to head straight across the Eastern Bay. So, now she swims on 40 feet of line and goes back and forth like a pendulum, barking all the way. Cool she ain't, but great.

CBRRR brought us together, and we are a very happy family now, with Sonya's dog-shaped hole neatly filled with Penny. Thank you.
