Our Featured Pet:

Jack is an older cat, about 7years and mostly keeps to himself. He hides under things when in a new environment (I feel that way sometimes!) Once he is acclimated he loves to come out and explore for a while before settling down to sleep in his favorite corner. It takes him a while to warm up to other cats, but he mostly minds his own business when other felines are around. Jack is a special fellow, he has a slight congenital heart condition, but is healthy and has not needed any medication since the condition was discovered and treated several months ago. He has gracefully accepted life, and as you can see by the charming photos, looks forward to the next adventure. His heart does not deter him from being playful, and he loves to chase feather toys! Jack loves it when people pet him, and is a total sweetheart who needs a loving, quiet home and a guardian who will spoil him with love, come and meet him!

Several generous donors have made this gift of life possible, and two will be present with their dogs for the ceremony. Our goal is that every firehouse in Yonkers have a set of pet rescue masks to facilitate the lifesaving rescue of pets involved in home fires and community disasters. Please join us if you can, and contribute to the fund by contacting Rosemary Lee at 914-584-0374 and thank you! YONKERS HUMANE SOCIETY PRESENTS PET RESCUE MASKS TO YONKERS FIRE DEPARTMENT WITH ROSIE THE RESCUE DOG On January 29, three sets of pet rescue masks were presented to the Yonkers Fire Department for the use of firefighters when they rescue a companion animal from a house fire or other disaster. Many families have lost their beloved pets to smoke inhalation, and the fire department now has the means to use these specially designed masks to provide vital oxygen to a pet who is not breathing. Rosie, featured here on our site, was the demonstration dog for the pet rescue masks. She did an outstanding job, and the firefighters and reporters attending the event loved her! She is still awaiting her permanent home, so if you have a big heart, please give our adoption coordinator a call, or stop by the Yonkers Animal Shelter and ask for Rosie! Several generous donors have contributed to a fund to supply additional pet rescue masks to the fire department, thank you Fetch! Pet Care of SW Westchester County and Mr. Jensen. Thanks to you, eight firehouses will each receive a set of pet rescue masks. We also appreciate the dedication of our firefighters and the coordination of Chief Fitzpatrick. ANIMAL ABUSE OUTRAGE

Update: March 6 Dogfighting Operation In Yonkers Home The City of Yonkers Police Department, SPCA Animal Cruelty officers, and Yonkers animal shelter have cooperated in the exposure of a drug and dogfighting operation in a private home in Yonkers. Fifteen pit bulls, who were in various states of medical conditions, were brought to the Yonkers Animal Shelter. Help is needed! Please come and adopt one of the dogs or cats that have been waiting for a home if you have been considering a pet. Volunteers can contact the Yonkers Humane Society to assist in dogwalking and offering donations. Providing care for 15 new dogs is a challenge for volunteers and staff, please help if you can. Dogs Left in Dumpster to Die The residents of the City of Yonkers and caring individuals throughout the region have been horrified by the recent crime of animal cruelty committed on two dogs who were left in a dumpster to die a horrible death. They were abused, beaten and emaciated. One dog died in the dumpster, on Yonkers Avenue at a gas station. The other animal was taken to the veternarian for the City of Yonkers Animal Shelter and is recovering. The Yonkers Humane Society is establishing a reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators of this crime. For more information, contact us via email or phone. Please alert your local police departments or the shelter staff if you know of any animal cruelty situations, especially dogfighting, which fosters violence in our society.

We are establishing a community education program to prevent animal cruelty and foster humane treatment of animals.

We have received many calls about cats left outdoors. Please contact Roger at (914) 500-7344, the cost is minimal at 40 dollars and his time is donated. Dogbite Prevention ! Teach children how to avoid being bitten, and how to approach animals. Check here for more information and resources for parents on preventing dog bites this month. The Yonkers Humane Society is partnering with Doggone Safe to provide training for community groups in Yonkers and schools. Here are the three most important things to teach the children: 1. Dogs don't like hugs and kisses-teach the kids not to hug or kiss a dog on the face. Hugging the family dog or face to face contact are common causes of bites to the face. Have them scratch the dog on chest or side of neck. Never approach a sleeping dog. 2. Be a Tree if a dog approaches-teach them to stand still, like a tree. Trees are boring, and the dog will likely go away. This works for strange dogs and if the family dog gets too frisky or becomes agressive. Stand still and look down, not at the dog. 3. Never tease a dog- do not disturb a dog who is sleeping or eating or protecting something, like a toy or bone. 4. Ask strangers if their dog is friendly, never approach an unknown animal.
