Happy Adoption Tails!

"All creatures are created from the same paternal heartbeat of God. Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission -- to be of service to them whenever they require it."

~St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals

Thousands of years ago, all the animals were wild. Because we as humans wanted the companionship of animals, we formed a covenant with cats and dogs. We asked them to give up their wildness to become our friends and companions. By agreeing to be our companions, the animals, our "pets", lost their natural skills to fend for themselves. It then became OUR responsibility to feed, care for and protect them. As we continued to change and reshape the environment to make life easier for ourselves, we made it harder and more dangerous for the animals. The animals have kept their part of the bargain, but we as humans have not. The Wildwood Pet Network is trying to make amends. Our goal is to see that companion animals remain safe at home, away from dangerous streets and out of over crowded shelters. We believe that all animals, wild and domestic, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. We further believe that each and every one of us can make the difference needed to keep our promise to the animals.
We CAN do this, if we work together!

We Have An Emergency Situation! On 6/6/07, Lucky River, a kitten, 8-9 weeks in age was rescued from the street by one of our volunteers. Both rear legs are broken. A special surgery is necessary to set the legs because there are pieces of bone which will require plates, etc. The one leg which is dangling may need to be amputated because there appears to be no feeling or ability to move that leg. There is no indication of internal injuries. Because the injuries are so severe we do not know if this is a male or female but the kiddo has spunk and continues to try to move about on front legs only. The vet has given the kitten fluids and pain medication to ease suffering. The vets expect a very good outcome even if one leg has to be amputated. Read Lucky "LuLu" River's Blogspot to follow her progress after surgery! You can also help by making a tax deductible donation in one of two ways.

Please Mail Your Tax-Deductible Donation To:

Make Your Donation Directly To: Wildwood Pet Network Fund at any 5th 3rd Branch location.

Thank You!

The Wildwood Pet Network (WPN) was founded in 1996 as a way to quickly reunite lost animals with their families. We have developed a system of procedures and strategies which are successful in reuniting the lost animal with their family in almost 90% of cases when each step is followed. We believe that when a wandering animal is found it is vital to think LOST, not stray. Immediate action must be taken to safeguard the animal and locate the family. According to national statistics only 14% of lost dogs and 4% of lost cats who are housed in shelters are ever reunited with their families. If every person who finds an animal would make a good faith effort to reunite them with their family our shelters and rescues would only need to take care of truly homeless animals.

The Wildwood Pet Network is here to help you if your own beloved animal is missing or if you have found a lost animal.

If you have lost an animal, please file a

LOST ANIMAL REPORT immediately.

If you have found an animal, please file a

FOUND ANIMAL REPORT.

After you've completed your report please return to this page and click on the link which applies to your situation to download the most recent version of our strategies.

What To Do When You FIND An Animal

Please keep in touch with us during your search. We are here to support you. We also need your feedback. Every animal who is reunited with their family teaches us something which we use to help the next animal and their family. What you do matters. If we work together we can get these animals, Safely Home.

Additional LOST and FOUND information

Animals who cannot be reunited are placed in foster care until a permanent home can be found. While in the care of WPN, all expenses for these animals (including spay or neuter fees) are paid for with tax deductable donations to WPN.

All of our animals are fostered in private homes. Although you can't technically come and see all of us collectively, we'd love to meet you and tell you more about us! If you are interested in becoming a part of our foster home network or would like to learn more about volunteering, please get in touch with us so that we can speak with you about this wonderful and rewarding opportunity! If you are thinking about adopting an animal, please contact us to place your name on our waiting list. We will ask you what kind of animal you wish to adopt....the species, physical and personality characteristics. We also need to have some information about you and your family, your lifestyle and the amount and type of space that you have available. We will contact you when we have a good match. If you are interested in adopting a specific animal in our petfinder registry, please email WPNpets@aol.com to arrange for an interview. All animals have been checked by a veterinarian. The adoption process includes an interview, home visit and a two-day "get to know each other" visit. When an adoption is finalized and an adoption agreement is signed, a donation in the animal's name is accepted and follow up is provided.

Katrina Relief

These links take you to some of the groups who are actively working to help the animals and their families who have been displaced by hurricane Katrina.

Katrina Shelter Supply Trips
The tristate is regularly collecting and sending supplies to the devastated region. We anticipate that these trips will be needed for months to come. Please check this part of our site Katrina Shelter Supply regularly for information about upcoming trips. If you have information about a shelter needing assistance or have a way you would like to contribute please email WPNpets@aol.com with details and contacts.

Other Ways You Can Help
Adopt or foster an animal from a local shelter to make room for a Katrina animal. In this sense all homeless animals are Katrina animals. Volunteer for local shelters or rescue groups, everyone's workload has increased. Provide trucks and fuel to transport supplies to shelters in the affected regions. Help organize the next collection. Please Email WPNpets@aol.com to volunteer.

Emergency Preparedness
Please have a disaster plan for your entire family and practice it. Do not evacuate without your animals. If you live alone work out an emergency plan with more than one friend or family member. We recommend that you download disaster procedures from www.hsus.org HSUS or www.aspca.org ASPCA

If you cannot provide a permanent home, please consider fostering a needy animal. Fostering is the cornerstone of our successful adoption program. WPN believes that foster care is preferable to shelter care because the animal is continually in a family setting. Traumatized animals need time, patience, understanding and the creativity of all involved to make the adjustment to family life successfully. For this reason, WPN provides ongoing support to its foster families. Help is only a phone call away. Foster families are not prohibited from adopting any animal in their care, but most foster care animals ultimately go to live with another family. Foster care is very important and makes all the difference in the quality of life for homeless animals. Foster homes are urgently needed! Please open your heart and home to an animal in distress.

Other Wildwood Pet Network Volunteer Opportunities:

WPN needs a variety of volunteer skills including transportation for animals and supplies, adoption day and special event staff, skilled office and computer assistance, an experienced grant writer, a photographer, obedience training buddies, TNR (Trap, Neuter & Return) staff and someone who likes to sew.

Please contact us if you can help! WPNpets@aol.com
