"All creatures are created from the same paternal heartbeat of God. Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission -- to be of service to them whenever they require it."

~St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals

Thousands of years ago, all the animals were wild. Because we as humans wanted the companionship of animals, we formed a covenant with cats and dogs. We asked them to give up their wildness to become our friends and companions. By agreeing to be our companions, the animals, our "pets", lost their natural skills to fend for themselves. It then became OUR responsibility to feed, care for and protect them. As we continued to change and reshape the environment to make life easier for ourselves, we made it harder and more dangerous for the animals. The animals have kept their part of the bargain, but we as humans have not. The Wildwood Pet Network is trying to make amends. Our goal is to see that companion animals remain safe at home, away from dangerous streets and out of over crowded shelters. We believe that all animals, wild and domestic, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. We further believe that each and every one of us can make the difference needed to keep our promise to the animals.

We CAN do this, if we work together!

For the last two years we have had an increase in abandonments and requests for placements due to foreclosure, eviction, job loss or health issues. When people contact us we are often able to provide alternative options to relinquishment but when pets are abandoned (which by the way is illegal) we cannot do the best for the pets because we know NOTHING about them. For example, what are their names, what do they eat, do they have medical issues, have they had their shots, what are their preferences in activities, toys, sleeping etc., are they good with kids or other pets, are they littermates? Just to name a few...

Puppy Needs Help...Family Does NOT Abandon Him

Photobucket

Rocky, a 6 month old Boxer puppy broke his leg while playing. Quickly, his family took him to the vet. After x-rays and an exam the vet determined that Rocky would need surgery to repair his broken leg. In addition, his family was told that due to the fact that one testicle had not dropped Rocky would need a special surgery for his neuter . The family had already spent over $200 which was not in the family budget. The estimate to repair his leg was $600-$800.

Rocky’s folks, Ruth and Eric had no idea how they would be able to pay for his surgery and felt the only thing they could do would be to find a rescue that would be able to take Rocky, pay for his surgery and then find him another home. Eric took time off work and he and Ruth began searching online for a rescue or shelter who could help. They were consistently told that the only option would be to euthanize Rocky, hardly a rescue mind set. Ruth thought there was no hope but Eric said, “Let’s try this next number," which was ours. We helped them find not one but two vets for additional opinions. These vets were also willing to work with various funding sources. By the next day Rocky had his leg repaired, a simple fracture which did not require surgery. He also had the specialized neuter surgery and is back home recuperating. The biggest challenge seems to be keeping the children from removing his 'lamp shade.'

WPN is grateful that Rocky’s folks called us and that his family and WPN were able to work quickly along with UAN.org and Towne Square Animal Clinic on Rocky’s case. We need to raise approximately $200 more to pay off his bill. If you would like to donate for him or for another animal in need please use the donation link below and confirm your donation for Rocky by email using the link provided below

Rescue Fact

There are 45 cats and dogs for every person born. Only 1 out of 10 dogs and 1 out of 12 cats born will find a family. Over 800 healthy, adoptable dogs and cats are killed each hour in the United States because there are not enough homes for them.

Is this hopeless? NO

Does a solution require a change in beliefs and behavior? YES

Opt to adopt, don’t buy from a pet store, an individual or flea markets.

Spay or neuter your pets. Sponsor or foster a rescue pet if you can't adopt.

The Wildwood Pet Network (WPN) was founded in 1996 as a way to quickly reunite lost animals with their families. We have developed a system of procedures and strategies which, when each step is followed, are successful in reuniting the lost animal with their family in almost 90% of cases. We believe that when a wandering animal is found it is vital to think LOST, not stray. Immediate action must be taken to safeguard the animal and locate the family. According to national statistics only 14% of lost dogs and 4% of lost cats who are housed in shelters are ever reunited with their families. If every person who finds an animal would make a good faith effort to reunite them with their family our shelters and rescues would only need to take care of truly homeless animals.

The Wildwood Pet Network is here to help you if your own beloved animal is missing or if you have found a lost animal.

If you have lost an animal, please file a

LOST ANIMAL REPORT immediately.

If you have found an animal, please file a

What To Do When You FIND An Animal

Please keep in touch with us during your search. We are here to support you. We also need your feedback. Every animal who is reunited with their family teaches us something which we use to help the next animal and their family. What you do matters. If we work together we can get these animals, Safely Home.

Additional LOST and FOUND information

Animals who cannot be reunited are placed in foster care until a permanent home can be found. While in the care of WPN, all expenses for these animals (including spay or neuter fees) are paid for with tax deductable donations to WPN.

.If you are thinking about adopting an animal, please contact us to place your name on our waiting list. We will ask you what kind of animal you wish to adopt....the species, physical and personality characteristics. We also need to have some information about you and your family, your lifestyle and the amount and type of space that you have available. We will contact you when we have a good match. If you are interested in adopting a specific animal in our petfinder registry, please email WPNpets@aol.com to arrange for an interview. All animals have been checked by a veterinarian. The adoption process includes an interview, home visit and a two-day "get to know each other" visit. When an adoption is finalized and an adoption agreement is signed, a donation in the animal's name is accepted and follow up is provided.

Disaster Relief

These links take you to some of the groups who are actively working to help animals and their families who have been displaced by natural disasters.

Other Ways You Can Help During A Disaster
Adopt or foster an animal from a local shelter to make room for a disaster animal. In this sense all homeless animals are disaster animals. Volunteer for local shelters or rescue groups, everyone's workload increases during crisis. Provide trucks and fuel to transport supplies to shelters in the affected regions. Help organize supply collections.

Emergency Preparedness
Please have a disaster plan for your entire family and practice it. Do not evacuate without your animals. If you live alone work out an emergency plan with
