The 2004 KITTEN SEASON is currently upon us and Wild Irish Rose Animal Rescue (WIRAR) is actively seeking loving, animal friendly foster homes to care for animals who desperately need our help. At this time, our GREATEST NEED is in finding available space to house needy pregnant Momma cats and their upcoming litter of kittens. These Mommas are ones that would normally be left outside on the streets to have their babies. These kittens are the ones that are most often advertised as "FREE TO A GOOD HOME". You know the ones who NEVER seem to receive any vaccinations, let alone get spayed or neutered. We will NOT wean any kitten until they are a MINIMUM of 6 weeks old, usually between 8-10 weeks of age. Since we will not adopt any kittens out until they have been surgically altered (which happens around 12 weeks old at the earliest), there is a time lag between their arrival at WIRAR and their adoption. Upon arrival at WIRAR, the animals are temporarily placed into a foster home with a family who will provides the care and environment that they need. We ask our foster homes to help socialize these animals, so that the animals will easily become beloved members of their new adoptive families. WIRAR's foster homes help to save as many needy felines as possible. All adoption placements will be done through WIRAR with feedback from the foster families.
THANK YOU for opening your hearts and home to one (or more) of these needy animals! THANK YOU so very much for your possible interest in helping us to save more lives!!!!

We are the Wild Irish Rose Animal Rescue (WIRAR) of Griswold, Connecticut, and we
officially came into existence in the late spring of 2003. Prior to this
time, our rescue involvement was done on a much smaller scale. In late spring and early summer of 2003, we officially started
out by adopting several feral cats from the Bridgeport Cat Project (BCP) located
in Trumbull, Connecticut. These feral cats were part of their "trap,
neuter or spay, and then release" program -- better known as a TNR
program. They were original residents of inner city Bridgeport and for one
reason or another, needed to be relocated. As a small farm owner, WIRAR
was able to adopt several of these needy cats for their barn. The majority
of the feral cat that were adopted are friendly to the family. They still
don't appreciate being picked up BUT they will allow themselves to be petted and
stroked. In fact, these feral cats find they actually LOVE to be touched
BUT only on THEIR terms! We were approached by our contact from the BCP,
to inquire whether we were open to possibly foster a heavily pregnant young
Momma cat. When this Momma arrived at our home, we were shocked and upset
that SOMEONE could treat their BELOVED pet this way. The Momma cat weighed
in at under 5 pounds upon arrival. She delivered FIVE (5) beautiful
apparently healthy kittens. Several weeks later, a litter of newborn
orphaned kittens was found and soon found their way to us. Several of the
Momma cats accepted these orphaned kittens and raised them along side their own
litter. Around the same time, we were looking for a kitten to be come
the friend of my youngest step-daughter. We looked high and low, but still
had a hard time finding anything suitable. Yes, there were kittens out
there BUT either they were very sick (diseased and their parents, grandparents,
etc. were never vaccinated) or we encountered the individuals that allowed their
so-called pet to be unaltered and consequently have repeated litters every heat
cycle. We finally found someone looking to find good homes for some
abandoned BELOVED pet's offspring. This visit was just the start of who
WIRAR is! This individual was overwhelmed trying to correct some
irresponsible pet owner's mistakes. The local Human Society was contacted
and they were unable to provide any help or guidance. None of the
local rescue groups could provide help either, considering the sheer numbers of
felines that were involved. All because someone had abandoned their
BELOVED kittens when they were about 6 months old, for who knows WHAT reason. This small group consisted of young pregnant Momma cats and
their first litter of kittens. I took in a couple of the Mommas (those
that were the closest to delivering), along with the obvious female
offspring. After securing areas and cages to hold everybody, we went back
and picked up the rest. and started WIRAR. We started getting the first
litter of kittens medical attention and then were lucky enough to be able to get
them ALL adopted out into their FOREVER homes! The second litter of
kittens started arriving to these young pregnant Mommas -- and here most of the Mommas
were not even a year old themselves. This second litter of kittens have
now been weaned and most have been completely vetted, as well as their
Moms. They all are looking for their FOREVER home. Will YOU be IT?
All of our WIRAR animals are currently being
vetted prior to their adoptions. This vet work consists of, but
is not limited to:
If you are interested in adopting one of our
rescue animals, please contact us. Our adoption procedure includes filling
out the adoption application (at this time, please contact us for the
application) and submitting it to us either by e-mail or postal mail. We DO require a
veterinarian reference, and also will contact three references
(non-related individuals)
from your application. Without these references, we CANNOT process your
application. To be fair to all potential adopters -- ALL adoptions are
done on the "first come, first serve"
basis. This means that the first completed adoption application received
AND APPROVED, will be able to adopt a particular animal. Some times, the
third or fourth approved application is the one who ends up taking an animal
home. When submitting an application, we ask that you either
please provide several choices of animals listed on the website (in their order
of preference) -- or -- provide a detailed description of what you are looking
for. This will help guide us in locating and placing the type and kind of
pet you are looking for. To help speed up and expedite the adoption
application review process, you can have your references contact us at their
convenience. They can leave a detailed message for us, providing their
name and phone number, the best time to contact them (in case we have further
questions), YOUR NAME, and THEIR observations as to YOUR interests, feelings,
and interactions with animals in general and pets in particular. Please NOTE -- ALL adoption
applications require a veterinarian to be listed. If you currently do not
have one, please start trying to locate one. You will need an available
vet for after the adoption, just in case of any emergencies. It really
helps to know WHO you need to call and whether they are accepting any new
clients. This is for your peace of mind, as well as ours! We do have an adoption contract that is filled
out at the time of the adoption. This contract states the terms of the
adoption. We will ACCEPT back any animal we have rescued and adopted out,
with no questions asked. You can help us to correctly adopt out this animal into
a future home, by just providing an honest explanation. Please note, there will
be no judgment made against you for being honest.
PLEASE NOTE:
We will NOT adopt out ANY young kittens (our kittens are not weaned from
their mothers until they are between 8-10 weeks old), so please do not call
asking for a 4-6 week old or younger kitten. DO NOT ASK for an unaltered
animal -- ALL animals are spayed or neutered prior to being adopted out!
Thank you for your understanding!!
Our current adoptions fees are: The best way to contact us is either through e-mail (wir_rescue3@yahoo.com
or wir_rescueadopt@yahoo.com) or by sending mail
to our mailing address. Your e-mail will be answered in a timely
matter as the e-mail account is usually checked once a day during the
week, less often on weekends. We try to check the e-mail account at least once during the weekends,
but cannot guarantee this, as we sometimes may not have time to. The mail is picked up from the Post
Office 2-3 times a week and will be answered within 2-3 days after we receive
it. If contacting WIRAR by phone, please remember it IS a residence (so there
are NO set hours), please leave a CLEAR detailed message with contact
information (STATED SLOWLY please!), including a day AND evening phone number. All phone messages
received will be answered within 2-3 days, almost always in the evenings. Please be aware that when
placing our return phone calls, we usually utilize calling cards AND various
other phone cards. For those individuals with caller id, this will cause a
phone number you do not recognize to show up. It appears that an out of
state phone number is placing the call. Please remember that WIRAR is NOT our full time
paid employment. We all work full time outside the rescue, as well as
running a small farm, so there is NOT a lot of free time to be spent answering
phones and correspondence. WE will do the best we can and hope you will
work with us on this. IF for some reason, you do not hear back from us in
a timely manner PLEASE contact us again. If we do not return your contact,
any of this could mean that the mail got lost whether through
the Post Office or Cyberspace, and phone messages can be deleted, the message
becomes garbled, we cannot understand the message, OR the number given is not a
correct number. The last reason (and usually the most truthful one) is
that we are extremely BUSY. Thank you for your interest
in our rescue animals! WIRAR is happy to receive donations of ANY supplies -- a
suggested list is included (but definitely anything helps!):
Thank YOU for your generous contributions! Your support helps us to
continue working for the needy animals!
WIRAR does NOT have set hours of operation. This rescue is
LOCATED in a residence where the occupants work full time. Visiting the
rescue is done by appointments only, scheduled in advance. Appointments
can usually be made for evenings between 7 and 8pm or most of the time on the
weekends. Although our mailing address is Voluntown, we are actually
physically located in
Griswold. Griswold is located in eastern Connecticut, near
Canterbury, Plainfield, Lisbon, and Voluntown and is somewhat near the Indian casinos
(Foxwoods Casino -- Ledyard (Mashatucket) and Mohegan Sun Casino -- Uncasville). We are
located approximately about 40 minutes from the Hartford, CT area; about 45 minutes from the
New Haven, CT area; about 20 minutes from the New London, CT area; about 45 minutes from the
Providence, RI area; about 2 hours from the New York City, NY area; about an hour from the
Springfield, MA area, and about 2 hours from the New Hampshire border area.

The adoption fees listed above, may have a slightly added amount for:
We have also chosen the Kuranda dog beds
and animal fleece pads for our rescue animals. They are so good for
the health, and well being, of both our dogs AND our cats. We still don't
have enough for all of our animals. If you would like to donate one of
these Kuranda products to our rescue, please select either a bed
(currently only 5 are needed) so that the canines can sleep in proper comfort,
-- or -- more urgently needed are the smaller sizes of fleece pads for our
feline cages, please
