BELLY BAND BASICS

WI-BFR promotes the use of male Belly Bands as a training tool. (A female version is also available in pet supply stores/catalogs.) Belly Bands are invaluable when introducing a dog politely into their new home, when visiting a friend’s home, or as a life-long necessity to ensure that furniture & carpeting stay intact.

One of the reasons that Bichons are surrendered is because of urine-marking in the house. Sometimes owners report that they do not have the time or resources to work on this behavior. For those interested in adopting a dog who marks, they may be able to re-train the dog with diligence, patience, and a firm policy on when and where the dog can have the free run of the house. It is possible to win the battle.

Why exactly do dogs mark? Dogs collect important social information by using their sense of smell, whether smelling other dogs directly or sniffing their urine and feces. That's why dogs urinate much more than necessary to simply empty their bladder. Marking helps them to claim territory and to support the social order. Dogs like hierarchy; it's what they understand. They communicate age, gender and status within their packs via the pheromones in urine. A dog also uses urine marking to help make a new environment smell like home, masking the unfamiliar odors with his own scent or to protect a dog's perceived space.

"WE PROUDLY WEAR BELLY BANDS WHEN OUR OWNERS ARE UNABLE TO WATCH US CLOSELY."
