Here at Vieques Humane Society we have been working so hard lately to get dogs homes in the states. We have been placing more and more dogs with the help of some great friends up north and we have been getting these animals second chances at life! It is not an easy task to get these animals off island but it is possible with the help and cooperation of all involved. From the 6 am ferry to taxi rides to the airplane these dogs are ready to be sitting on someones couch and relaxing at the end of the day and we are happy to get them there! We are hoping to start a fund for this adoption program so we can get more animals home. All the new owners of Vieques animals know how great these animals are and we hope to spread the word! The Vieques Humane Society is a non-profit organization working to alleviate the suffering of the many animals on the island of Vieques and to spread awareness of animal welfare.
We are the only animal shelter on the small island of Vieques located off the east coast of Puerto Rico. Over the years the Vieques Humane Society with all of its hard workers and supporters have been working to control the stray animal situation through means of education, spay and nuetering, camps, and more. We have two veterinarians that come weekly to work as well as many great volunteers and vet students. To the people that have dedicated their lives or just a part of their life here at VHS, it is often times heart breaking, but more of the time heart warming. These animals on this island are special and touch the hearts of every person that comes here. We want so bad to help every one we meet and to find a happy ending for them as well. In the mean time we do our best to keep them happy and healthy.
Adopting a friend
Since we are on a small island with so many animals we try hard to adopt animals off the island and up to the states. We get the animals to San Juan either by plane or ferry and taxi and people can either fly with them to the destination city or we can ship them as well. Often times, people that are leaving the island will offer to take animals with them which is a great help for us and the new owners as well. You can contact us about adopting and talk to us a little on the phone as well as fill out our application that we can send to you. We really want to make sure that our animals are going to homes where they will be safe and loved for a long time so a letter of recommendation from your vet mailed in with the application would be great too. All our animals come spayed/neutered and dewormed and vaccinated. We have so many dogs and cats that have their own tales of survival and they are all so appreciative of the love they receive and you can see it in their eyes. You will forever be in love if you choose to adopt an animal from Vieques.
