Precautions for July 4th

Remember July 4th celebrations can be a frightening time for your pets. Make sure they are wearing proper identification. If your pet does run away during the exploding noise of a fireworks display, you will have a better chance of recovering the animal if it is wearing an ID tag. If your pet gets lost contact us at (814) 677-4040. Animals that are frightened by the noise and confusion will try to hide by chewing through ropes, jumping fences or running away. Keep the pets indoors. Don't put your animals into crates. Let them have some indoor space to move about freely. Frightened animals can injure themselves by trying to escape the crate.

The Venango County Humane Society will be closed Saturday, July 4th. It will reopen at noon on July 6th.

Because animals are largely silent victims who can't reach out to authorities themselves, law-enforcement officials must often rely upon witnesses such as friends and neighbors to bring cruelty, abuse, and neglect to their attention.

If you see animals being neglected or abused, contact the PASPC or Pennsylvania Society for Prevention of Cruelty to animals at this toll free number:

1-866-601-7722

If in doubt about whether particular behavior constitutes abuse, it's better to err on the side of caution and report the suspected abuse to officials. They will investigate the claims, and decide whether a crime has occurred.

Warm Weather tips

Now that the weather is getting warmer, remember the following tips: Jogging in the heat may damage a dog's paws. If you have an elderly dog, extensive jogs may be injurious or even fatal. So try taking jogs early in the morning or late at night so the pavement is not as hot.

Leaving a dog in the car may be life threatening, even if the window is open or the car is in the shade. Temperatures can reach 160 degrees within minutes.

Make sure your dog has all his vaccination shots because warm weather brings out animals with disease like rabies and distemper.

Make sure your dog's water bowl is ALWAYS full with water. Without water your dog might receive heat exhaustion.

Do not let your dog stick his head outside the window because dust particles may irritate its eyes, and your pet may try to jump out of the window.

On especially hot days, your dog will likely enjoy being indoors in air conditioning, or in front of a fan, as much as you do. Fresh water should be available to your dog at all times, regardless of the season, but it is especially important during hot weather. The greater the heat and humidity, the more important this becomes.

Lose a pet? Call us first. (814) 677-4040

Dog licenses are available at the Humane Society, noon till five, Monday through Saturday.

Animals are available for adoption during business hours. All animals have received vaccinations and come with spay/neuter certificates. The certificates may be used at the veterinarian of your choice. Once adopted, all animals must be vaccinated by a licensed veterinarian. Any animal over three months of age must be licensed before leaving the shelter.

The Venango County Humane Society 's Thrift Store, located in Franklin near the corner of Liberty and Eighth Street, is now open for business. The hours are 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. The store is operated by volunteers, and all proceeds go to benefit the Humane Society. For information regarding times when items can be dropped off or to arrange to have items picked up, call (814) 676-6303. Donations of any kind are welcome: furniture, knick-knacks, clothing of all sizes. Please be sure clothing items are laundered and in relatively good condition.

If you would like to make a monetary donation to the Humane Society, mail it to the address below, or drop it into the cans on our table at the mall on Saturdays:

No amount is too small.

The cat population increases drastically over the summer months. In order to help control the pet population, have your cat spayed or neutered.

Breeding season for cats is typically from January to September. A male cat or tom can become a father as early as six months. Neutering dramatically reduces or eliminates tomcat spraying, fighting, and roaming behavior. Neutered male cats stay closer to home, become much less aggressive, and become more affectionate pets.
A female cat or queen may become pregnant by four months of age. Spaying puts a permanent stop to her interest in romance, including continous yowling, rubbing up against the furniture, rolling around on the floor, and her urges to roam.

Rocky

Kacey was adopted yesterday. We know she'll make a fine pet for her new family.

Our next featured pet for May is Rocky. Some of you may be familiar with Rocky because of his many visits to the mall. He's a 7 year old Chocolate Lab mix. His brown eyes complement the color of his coat. Rocky is very shy. When his owners separated, neither one could take Rocky, so he was brought to the shelter. Rocky makes a lot of new friends every time he visits the mall. He's a little overweight for a Lab because he doesn't get as much exercise as he needs at the shelter. Rocky has a stable temperament and is housetrained. Being a social animal, he'll be happiest living inside with his family with access to a yard. He'll also need a daily walk on leash or a run off leash in a safe area. Rocky is patiently waiting to meet his new owner at the Humane Society, noon till five, Monday through Saturday.

For more information call (814) 677-4040 between noon and 5 p.m., Mon.-Sat.

We make it easy for you to do the right thing! All animals adopted from our shelter come with a free certificate for a spay/neuter, which the law requires you to have done upon adoption.

News and Activities

Petfinder Updates

We try to update our pet listings every week with new arrivals, usually on Wednesdays. We remove listed animals who have been adopted during the week. Last update: June30. Next update expected: July 7.
Click here to see our latest pet list.

DAD's Donation Drive

We are proud to be participating in DAD'S Have A Heart Program. Send us the UPC labels from any DAD'S dog or cat food product, and the company will make a cash donation to our shelter. You can bring these labels to us in person at the shelter, or send them to 2724 Deep Hollow Rd., Franklin, Pa. 16323. Thank you DAD's!

Mall Visits

Almost every Saturday, the Venango County Humane Society takes some of its dogs and cats on a field trip to the Cranberry Mall in Seneca, PA. Come meet us there from noon to about 4 p.m., sign up to be a member or a volunteer, and find out more about our wonderful animals. We always need more volunteers for our mall visits, so please email us if you can help, at vencohs@yahoo.com .

Puppies, Kittens & Small Breeds

Although we try to update our Petfinder listings with new animals at least once a week, not every animal we have available for adoption makes it onto the Petfinder list. In particular, young puppies, kittens, and small breed dogs often go out the door so quickly that there is not time to take their pictures and post them. If you are interested in one of these types of animals, please call us or drop by the shelter. If you are persistent, you are likely to find the animal you are looking for.

Bingo

Our spay/neuter program is primarily funded by bingo at the Seneca Fire hall at 7 P.M. on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Please join us. Even if you lose, the animals win!

Website

Who We Are

The mission of the Venango County Humane Society is to prevent cruelty to animals and to promote public animal care education and awareness. The Venango County Humane Society was incorporated as a private, non-profit organization in 1956. Our shelter was built in 1971 on Deep Hollow Road in Oil City, PA.

Many people assume because of our name that we are a branch of the county government and are subsidized by county funds. However, this is not the case. We must rely on donations, memberships, memorials, and fundraising to operate.

Individual and family memberships in the Humane Society are available. Individual memberships are $5.00, and family memberships are $10.00. Your membership or contribution may be sent to:

P.O. Box 1045
Oil City, PA 16301

Other Services

The Venango County Humane Society provides many services to the community, in addition to taking in lost pets and providing adoption services:

Nursing home/hospital visits. For the past thirteen years, we have been taking volunteers and their animals to visit people in area nursing homes and hospitals. If you are interested in participating in this program, you may contact Joan Loeffler at (814) 432-2560.

We also provide shelter tours and humane education programs. Tours and programs may be arranged by contacting our shelter manager, Kathy Rial, at (814) 677-4040.

For additional information about our services, including our efforts to prevent animal cruelty, please contact us at (814) 677-4040, between the hours of noon and 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Adopting a friend

Although phone and email inquiries are welcome, all adoptions must be made in person between noon and 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, at our shelter on Deep Hollow Road in Oil City.

The adoption fee for cats is $22.00, and for dogs is $32.00. All applicants must also sign an adoption contract and agree to get their new pet spayed or neutered. Each animal comes with shots and a certificate for a free spay/neuter at the veterinarian of your choice. (This is a great deal, and a good reason to adopt an animal from our shelter, since a spay/neuter can run upwards of $100!)

We do the best we can describing our animals online, but there is no substitute for coming to meet them, and asking our staff about them -- they know the animals far better than anybody else does.

When you do come to see us, please ask us and we will let you visit with the animal of your choice outside its cage or kennel. We recommend that as the best way to get to know an animal before you decide to take it home.
