VERY SPECIAL NEEDS PET
Eddy
Eddy
THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOUR PET SOMEDAY!!!
This listing is for those of you that get tried of your pet and are willing to give it to who ever answer your [FREE PET AD] you run on the net or in the paper. This is what happen to Eddy and his 5 cage-mates and many other animal we get into just this shelter alone. This is going on in most all shelters, Many shelters will turn them away not wanting the expense and time to care for a sick or injured animal. The kill shelters will put them down if turn over to them. Some of the animals may find the few of us that will try and help them.
When you give your pet to someone you do not know you really do not know what is going to happen to it. A few of the lucky ones end up in super good forever homes and this is great. Many end up like Eddy here. A darling young couple answered Eddy's and his cage-mates free ad telling the owner now they always wanted ferrets and would always love them. This darling couple was gathering up free pet to give to their pit bull to play with. You can see the size of Eddy's head this is swelling from where he his been bitten by the pit. See how thin he is this is called skin on bones, his tail is bigger then his hips. We do not know how long it has been that they were given any food or water. It would scare you to know how many big reptiles we get into this shelter when we ask what do you feed it. Many answer what ever is in the free ads in the paper. Free kitty, puppies what ever cheaper then paying $20. for a feeder rabbit. If you do not want your pet any longer then please make sure for the pet's sake that you find a safe place to take them. Out of Eddy and his cage-mates 6 of them 2 were killed by the pup. You can see what Eddy is like and the 1 jill and 2 hobs are in just as bad a shape as he is. 6-12-08 Eddy and his group are all improving slowly but surely
Saggy
Saggy
Saggy is a very special old man. he has never been seen by a vet before coming here. By now it is to late due to periodontal disease never being treated it caused liver and kidney failure. Ferrets like all other pets need to be taken to a vet and had their teeth cleaned on a regular basis. If you are going to be a ferret owner you need to put some money away every payday for general vet care and extra for when they need surgery. 99.9% of ferrets will end up with cancer and will need surgery at sometime in their life. Surgeries are costly so you need to prepare for this. Saggy is such a sweet loving boy that wants to be held and loved on all day. It is so sad to see him going through this and know he is going to pass soon all because no one would take him to a vet and get his teeth cleaned. If you would like to help the shelter make his last days as comfortable as possible he needs a bottle of vaseline, baby oil, lots of pee pads and a few soft blankets. He also can use a bag of Iams dry kitten food.
A Special Thanks To Our Special Helpers
Jan. 2008 All of us at the shelter want to extend a thank you and to tell everyone how much we deeply appreciate you for all of your help and donations you sent our way in 2007. With your help we were able to save over 1500 pets in 2007. Let see if we can double that 1500 in 2008.
Monthly News
Sept. 20, Update
We are as ready for winter I think as we can get as far as the building goes. Now we start on putting I think we are on the 10th great, great grand kid of our dear sweet vet collage fund. We how start on getting all of our ferrets surgeries taken care of so we can get them in tip top shape and ready for adoptions. We have taken in quite a few adrenal kids this fall normal time of year for the hobs to start showing signs in the spring we will see the female coming in. Maybe the hobs can all find homes for X'mas this year. All of our gliders are now alter except the 8 new born we had this week and the two still in the pouch. I am looking for a foster home to house no more then 10 parrots this winter in the SLC area and do viewings for me so I can get them adopted out. The ones that do not find homes I will take back into the shelter next spring or sooner if need be. This will free up some room for a recovery room for the adrenal kids after their surgeries. If you are game to help me with this e-mail me (LISA) at utahcrittersanctuary@yahoo.com. In subject line put "NEW BIRD MOM/DAD". Please send a phone number I can call you at and a good time to find you at home. Weekends are best for me if you are home then. For now we are doing good but I may need a foster later this winter to help house some gliders and reptile seeing increase in surrenders. E-mail me (LISA) at utahcrittersanctuary@yahoo.com if you would be interested in helping out. In subject line put "NEW GLIDER MOM/DAD" or "NEW REPTILE MOM/DAD" Please send a phone number I can call you at and a good time to find you at home. Weekends are best for me if you are home then. So that about wraps it up here for now. Big hugs & thanks to everyone for their help. Lisa

Sept 18, Update
Many of you have call the shelter to ask me how do you go about adopting or come and view an animal we have in rescue. First thing you need to do is e-mail me (LISA) at utahcrittersanctuary@yahoo.com for an adoption application. All adoptions and viewings are done by appointment only. Why by appointment only do you ask! Because we all work outside of the shelter to pay for the never ending bills this comes with caring for the animals we rescue. Utah law you must have a private home to live in or you are considered a vagrant ( I do not know why I never get time to even see my home or do most of our employees) So this means we all need to work 1 full time job to cover personal expenses then we need to either work another full time or 2 part time jobs to cover the shelter's expenses. No one donates the vet bill when they turn over that sick pet to us. We are a no kill shelter so we do not qualify for state or federal funding. There are grant out there for dog and cat rescues but there is no help for the exotics we take in. Even a healthy pet will require vet check ups, blood work and vaccines. This is not like taking a dog or cat to the vets an exotic pet cost up to 4 to 10 times more for vet care. Our vet does give us discounts but we still have a large bill to pay at the end of each month. He has to make a living too so he has to charge us for his services and supplies.
My schedule is as followed I am out of here at 6 A.M. Mon-Thur I return at 10 P.M. I work these hours, my company pay me to do a job for them not to be on the phone telling someone to e-mail for an adoption application. Without an application being filled out first I will not set a time for a viewing. We need to make sure you are eligible for an adoption before I will tie up an employees time to do a viewing. When I am in my office at work I do have access to the Internet and can help you that way. When I am out in the field I do not have access so you may not get an answer back right away. I am sorry your's are not the only e-mail or call I have to answer everyday so it may take me sometime to get back to everyone. I keep 3 employees at the shelter at all times one to answer the phone and run errand's, the other two are there to care for the animals. Please if you call and they do not answer they are busy taking care of the animals leave a message and they will call you when they are free. My main caregiver is back in the hospital I am covering for her till reinforcement arrive from out of state to cover for me . I try and sleep from 10 P.M. to 2 A.M. so please emergency calls only at this time. I work with the animals from 2:15 A.M. to 5:30 A.M. at 5:30 A.M.to 6:00 A.M. I am in the shower so no calls then. 2 A.M. to 2:15 A.M. I am drinking some strong coffee to wake me up so feel free to call me then if you like I can answer the phone at that time, but if I have a handful of fuzzes I can not answer the phone. If you would like me to free up more time to talk to you, you are more then welcome to donate or make some calls to see if you can get me some killer deals on the items we need here then I can take some time off to visit with you. We need a frig the one we had coming never showed up. We need a washer where we do 10 to 20 loads of blankets a day washers and dryers do not last long. We need a truck, van or SUV we had to euthanssia our old one it was suffering to badly. Our ferret and mink room needs an A/C unit or swamp cooler that can cool a 1000 sf room. I need a sewing machine and fabric to make hammocks and blankets we had a lady donate one but by the time I got a truck lined up to pick it up she gave it to someone else. We can always use food, litter, bedding. or any other pet supplies. Or please feel free to donate funds to our vaccines and meds we need for the new and sick kids in the shelter. If you can not help me with any of this then I will continue to work like all the rest of us here do so the animals in our care never have to do without. I am at the shelter Fri - Sun but I do have work here I need to get done. I am sorry for any inconvenient this may cause any of you, but I need to make sure these animals are being cared for and get into new homes. Thank you for any help you may send our way, If you are not able to help that is understandable but please do not feel free to complain if you do not hear back from me for a few days. LISA

Here it is the end of Aug. We have had lots of surrendered ferrets this month, most every one has had cancer and are in need of surgeries. This will be a fall project is to get these kids into surgery healed up and ready to find new forever homes.
The shelters truck finally died after 20 years of hard labor of hauling thing for the shelter. It is so old we are having a hard time finding parts to fix it any more. We are still looking for a good washer and will need help getting that here also. For a no-kill shelter we sure kill our share of washers and dryers around here..
Big thanks goes out to Thane for helping us feed the kids here in rescue and donations for other supplies. Marjorie thank you for helping me with the cages your daughter donated for the sugars. Thank you Hildy for the cages and what were you feeding that glider WOW!! want a fatty she is. Candice thanks for bring the ferrets to me saved so much time having them dropped off.
We are on the look out for a good truck or van to replace our old one. If anyone knows of one please call us. Also soon will be in need of a small car that is great on gas to run the kids to the vets and other errand Lets us know if you see one or have one you want to find a new home for.
July-08
Here it is almost the 1st of Aug. We have had lots of new kids come in this summer to keep us all busy. We had some sick and many healthy under 6 month old kids come in. Baby can be tons of extra work so if you do not have the time or energy to be a full time ferret maid I recommend you look at an older ferret one or above. We want to thank everyone that sent in cages and extras supplies with your surrendered pet to help us with their care. A huge thanks goes out to a sweet wonderful man [Thane] for helping our ferret lady care for all of the sick, injured, special needs and unadoptable kids. We would not be able to give these kids the care they need if not for his help. Many would have had to be put down. Bless you!! you sweet man for caring enough to help these kids in need here. Please all check out our wish list we are looking for a few items you may have around the house you are no longer in need of. Mostly we are in need of old towels, bed sheet, pillow case or shams, fabric, sewing machine, presser washer, washing machine and a window mount swamp cooler. needs to cool a1000 sf room. If you would like to donate and get a tax write off that would help us out big time. Or if you have any of the items we are looking for in good working order for sale call and lets deal.
For everyone that has e-mailed or called so far this month. If you have not heard back from us yet hang in there. Right now we are busy, busy gearing up for the forth. We are getting as many extra cages and kennel we have ready for the displaced critters from the fireworks shows around the valley. We also have a few extra boarders in that takes extra time to spend with them. They are lonely without their families being here. We will get back to answering e-mails and returning calls on Monday the 7Th. Big THANK YOU!!! goes out to Thane & Carin for your donations to help the critters this month.
June-08
This has been a busy month for turn ins and adoptions are slow this time of year. Our dear ferret friend and sponsor has helped use through some rough times. Thanks so much Thane for all the love and care you send our way the kids send their love back to you. One of our bird have found 3 lady friends that have been collecting info to help us get him out of his cage and shell he has build around himself. Thank you Kathy, Phoebe & Gay for caring to help him. On the 10Th of this month one of the visitor in the ferret room stole our big hob out of the blue cage by the front door. I want him returned you have till the 15Th and I will not press charges. We are looking to get 7 of the ferret national cages to redo the mink room they need the bigger stronger cages their's are getting old and the mink are getting stronger and pulling the welds apart on the cage's bars. If anyone has one you want to sell for less then store cost we are interested. Our mink lady can use all the help she can get with this. Thank you Debbie for finding the wire to the cage for use to pick up and the other goodie you add to the cage. All will be put to good use. Kayla thank you sweet lady for the donation and gift card this will be put towards Eddy and his cage-mates care.
May-08
First we want to thank a dear friend to our ferrets for sending them everything we need to fix their soup for them. Also Thane thank you for all the other goodies you sent to the ferrets. Thank you goes out to Ann for your donations, the parakeets are doing great and are getting ready to go to a new home soon. Also to Carol for the glider cage that worked out great later that day 4 gliders came in that need a cage. Dear Tayler thanks again sweet lady every time we meet you fill my car up with goodies to care for our critters. Dear Christy you have a big heart and thank you for giving some of our needy fuzzes a loving home and taking care of so many other. Bryon if not for you going up the tree that poor bird would have frozen that night a HERO AWARD for you Christy and Justin. Dear Windy thank you for caring for our rats for so long and all the cages you got together for the ferrets and birds. Betty the washer is going in the ferret room so they have their very own.
We recently had some badly beat up ferrets sent into rescue. We are in need of baby food, cereal, replacement milk, Iams dry kitten food and baby wipes. If anyone can help with this please give us a call. We are going through a gallon of soup a day and a bag of wipes.
April-08
Well this year started out with a bang. We have had a few very sick critters turned into rescue. Also we have had some grumpy ones with a bad attitudes needing lots of extra attention to rehab come in this year. All of our grumpy ones need lots of TLC something they have never known before to start to trust again and maybe stop their fear biting. As usual here the critters come first. So as usual we are behind on updating this page so our friends, fosters and members can see what we have been up too. To all of you that has sent in donations this year to help save a critter in rescue "HUGE FUZZES & FEATHER KISSES AND HUGS TO YOU." Without your help we could not save so many lives here. All of our adrenal newcomers (8 of them) had had surgery and are recovering fully. Great time of year to do this with the spring shed season they are all getting new hair in now. We do have a favor to ask of all of you. If anyone has a blender that works and not being used. If you are looking to sell it or if you are out shopping and see a good sale on one. Please call us and let us know. Our foster that helps care for our sick and recovering ferrets is in need of a new blender to fix the soup they use here to feed the sick kids. Also if you see a good sale on a microwave small to mid-size to heat the soup up with, one of our fosters is looking to replace an old one that is burning out. Big Thank You for any help we can get with this. All are doing well, the sick we have in are all recovering well. We are hoping to find some good home ASAP for the 11 birds we still have here. These bird all need lots of TLC they are wild so no one wants to adopt them. All are great birds they are fun to watch and listen too, you just can not hold them. This is no reason for them to have to live in a shelter the rest of their very long lives. So if you have been thinking of adding a bird to your family please consider a great rescue bird. It is spring and so many of our new gliders coming in have joeys in the pouch. These critters breed faster then bunnies so very soon we are going to have joeys for adoption. Please if you are looking for a pet to breed do not contact us. Every critter before it leaves the shelter to go out for adoption it will be spay/neuter. Please do not call or e-mail us saying you do not want the critter you want to adopt alter it is not needed. We will not adopt to anyone with that attitude and YES IT IS NECESSARY!! The number one reason there are so many rescues that are bursting at the seams and millions of pets being put to sleep every years is due to people with attitudes that you do not need to alter you pet.
March-08
Sorry to all that has called about your application status. I'm behind on my paperwork, e-mails and calls. We have had several sick animals turned in, Several more with the flu and a crazy mink that has taken up bungee jumping only to find out bungees have a breaking point. A few hundred dollars in surgery later, mink is fine, pride a bit damaged but he will survive. Now for the rest of us we are putting in the good old OT to cover vet bills and to order in the meds we need to treat the sick ones. When not at work we are trying to cover for one another so we can all try for at least 4 hours of sleep a night each. As soon as the critters are feeling better and we get our vets bank account fatten up I will get paperwork, e-mails and phone call caught up. I'm sorry for any inconvenience this may be causing any of you but the critters care comes first here no matter what.
Lost & Found Pets
No Lost or Found Pets In At This Time.

We are all working double shifts or taking on a 2nd & 3rd jobs to pay the medical bills and buy supplies to give the pets in rescue a better life. If you call and don't get an answer or you don't get a return e-mail right away. It's because we are busy and will get back to you as soon as we have sometime. We are sorry for any inconvenient this may cause any of you. Please leave a message and we'll call you back ASAP!
Who We Are
We're Utah's only 501(c)3, non-profit, no-kill exotic critter sanctuary. We're the only sanctuary in the state that has on staff experts that have over 37 years specializing in the care and transport of birds, ferrets, reptiles and other exotic critters. We deal mainly with the stress and depression that is life threading to exotic pets when moved from one home to another. We also are the only sanctuary in the state that will never split up bond pairs or cage-mates that are surrendered into the sanctuary together. Also any items that are turned in with any animal will stay with that pet and go with them to their new home. We will not sell any animals items separately from that pet like other shelters do. We are celebrating our 38 anniversary this year. How the years fly when you're having so much fun loving on all the critters that have passed through our doors. We opened our doors as a reptile sanctuary on 1-01-70 then added the birds and later the ferrets and it just kept building from there. Now if any critter no matter what its species is in need of help we'll do whatever we can for it. If you find yourself in need to relocate or surrender a critter, be it a pet or one you found call us and let see if we can help. We do offer free pick up of critters and we don't charge a surrendering fee. All critters are housed in a home environment at the sanctuary. We find this warm, loving home style environment make the critters in our care less stressful. It gives us the ability to get to know the critter's true personality so we can match critters perfectly to its forever home. We are a 24-7 emergency rescue and care clinic for sick, injured, abused, healthy, abandon, homeless, lost and found critters. Any temperament or in any condition call us we're willing to help.

News
You may find a critter or bird show up in your yard, garage or basement. Wildlife are better off left alone, they belong in the wild and need to stay there. Don't for you and the critters safety take wildlife out of its environment. All wildlife will bite and they can endanger your health. We do understand animals get injured or off springs get separated from mommy and need to be rehabbed before released. There are special trained people that do just that if you find an offspring in need call us and we'll get you in contact with one of these people. It's illegal and inhumane to keep any wildlife as a pet. When it grows up and becomes sexually mature it will become aggressive. You're not going to know how to handle it and guess what you have a wild biting critter on your hands. No one will want it and at this age it's to old to rehab and release in 99% of these cases the critter ends up euthanasia. Due to some animal rights group that have set fur farms animals loose, some of you may find mink or fox on your property or around rivers and lakes. Farm mink and fox don't fear humans and may approach a human wanting food. Some people think mink are ferrets they do look kinda alike. Beware mink do bite and so do some ferrets. If you do happen to catch a mink or fox call us we will make sure it well be save. If you take a mink or fox anywhere else it'll be euthanasia. We are also the only shelter in Utah licensed to give mink and fox lifetime sanctuary if needed.

Free Boarding For Deployed Military
To help with the support of our beloved troops that are sacrificing so much of themselves for our safety and freedom the sanctuary will provide FREE BOARDING of any exotic critter belonging to any deployed military for as long as needed.
The Sanctuary's Hours & Days
We would all love a day off after 38 years serving the critters in our care. However I don't think the critters would understand if we weren't here to have playtime. So for 2008 we'll remain open 24-7, 365 days. So feel free to call anytime we'll be happy to help you.
