WHAT IS AN ADOPTION FEE?
An adoption fee is a fee paid for the act of adopting. It is not a sale price, nor is it a price at all, as we do not sell animals. If you return an animal, this fee is not refundable, however you will not be charged a drop off fee for the return if you adopted the animal from us.
We are a private NO KILL rescue and are privately funded. We do not receive grants from government or corporate sources. If you wish to help with fostering or assisting in other ways, please contact us. We do not give refunds for any reason, so please do not adopt a cat with the intention of trying it out and then returning it for a refund.
Our cats and kittens are fostered in private homes. It is important to us that no foster is over-burdened and that no cat feels overcrowded, so the number of animals we keep is limited. Our fosters are not contacts for our group nor do they participate in an adoption process. Some of our cats or kittens may be on display at local stores or veterinary offices. Although they may be visited during regular business hours, please do not expect the business employees to be able to answer questions about the cat or open locked cages for you.
We do not condone or allow declawing of any of our cats. We also will not allow laser surgery which cuts the tendon to the claw so the cat cannot extend the claw. This causes the cat to be unable to shed the claws when they become too long and clipping is nearly impossible because the claw can no longer be 'popped' out for a clip. Claws of these cats will grow into the pad of the foot.
Texas Exotic Cat Rescue specializes in cats who appear to have some wild heritage, such as Bengals and Savannahs, including derived breeds and mixes of those, and some others such as the Pixie Bobs who just look like a wild cat. Often these cats need slightly different care than other cats, perhaps requiring more personal territory than the average house cat, so we may not have as many cats in our rescue than other shelters.
GIVING UP A CAT OR KITTENS TO OUR RESCUE
We can take cats or kittens on a space-available basis. Call us at (972)842-2392 to discuss arrangements. We do not take in sick cats. If your animal is sick we will do all we can to work with you until he or she is well enough to be transferred into our care. There may be a drop off fee, depending on the time of year, age, and type of cat or kitten you wish to give us. If you are interested in giving up a cat or kittens, you must show proof that they do not carry feline leukemia or feline aides. For a litter of kittens, either the mother or one of the kittens may be tested. We do not have foster homes for positive cats and cannot keep them.
ADOPTING A SMALL KITTEN UNDER 12 WEEKS OF AGE: Small kittens, like human babies, require supervision and constant companionship. Applicants interested in taking home two kittens will take precedence over someone wanting only one. We make every effort to ensure the happiness and well-being of the kitten. Most kittens under three pounds will go to homes without small children.
SHIPPING AND TRANSPORT
We do not ship cats, nor will we provide transport, nor will we allow cats to be transported on multi-animal or multi-leg transports. The adopter must come and pick up the cat and accompany it home.
ADOPTION DONATIONS
Are as stated in the kitty's write-up or on special as advertised.
*** SENIOR FOR SENIORS SPECIAL***
We are allowing fully vetted senior cats (ten years or older) to be adopted into homes with owners over 50 years of age for only $50. These kitties are pleasant and loving and even playful, so do consider one of these wonderful cats. Offer may not extend to pure-bred cats.
If you are approved for adoption and you wish to wait to come pick up your kitten or cat, be sure to call first. WE DO NOT HOLD CATS.

ADOPTER AGREES TO THE FOLLOWING:
2. This cat/kitten will be kept indoors, on a leash, or in a cat-safe enclosure and will not be exposed to extreme temperatures or weather. This animal will not be allowed to roam freely outside.
3.This cat/kitten is being adopted as a pet and will be owned by the person named in the approved application.
4.All adopted pets not yet spayed/neutered must be altered (castrate or spay) before the age of 6 months and proof of this must be sent to the address given within this time limit. Adopter further agrees that this animal will not be used for stud or breeding. I further understand that this animal may or may not be of any specific breed or mix of such breeds.
5.I understand that although this animal has been in a protected environment, there is the possibility of unrecognized illness appearing after an adoption is finalized, especially because of the stress the animal may experience during the first few days at its new home. The rescuer advises adopters of the animal’s known history and provide its medical records, but frequently we know only what the animal chooses to tell us. We cannot make any guarantee regarding the long-term health of any animal and therefore we are not responsible for any vet costs incurred after this animal leaves our care.
6.The rescue agrees that if this animal should die or must be euthanized within 48 hours of adoption, the animal will be replaced only if the rest of this contract has been adhered to. A veterinary statement must accompany any such request including cause of death. Accidental deaths are not covered by this guarantee and this includes drowning, crushing, attack by another animal or human, death due to fire or smoke, freezing, suffocating, and poisoning or other act of cruelty. Death from flea products or other products not specifically designed for kittens will be considered poisoning. If this animal is found to be mistreated or declawed after adoption, adopter agrees to surrender said animal to the above named rescue unconditionally. There are no refunds.
7.If another animal is adopted by the same party at a later date, or if the above animal is replaced for any reason, the name of the new animal will be added to this contract and no further contract will be necessary as this one will remain binding for all animals owned by the person stated above and signed below and adopted from this rescue.
8.It is advised that the adopter has said animal examined by a qualified veterinarian and the adopter is encouraged to sign up for the Shelter Care insurance plan available with this pet at Petfinder.com. The adoption agency is not responsible for medical conditions.
9.My current cats have had and are up-to-date on their yearly (fvcrpc & rabies) vaccinations.
10.The adopter agrees not to hold the adoption agency/rescue responsible for any illness, disease or charges for treatment of the animal nor for any damages for which the animal may do to any person or property. The rescue named above will not be responsible for any debts or charges incurred for veterinary services or private veterinarians for the adopted animal.
Fostering responsibilities include:
Providing a safe and loving temporary home.
Providing basic supplies such as food and litter. We can loan carriers, litter boxes, and other supplies, if needed.
Monitoring the cat's health, seeking authorization from TXECR for follow-up medical care, taking the cat to authorized vet appointments, and maintaining all medical records.
Monitoring the cat's behavior and seeking advice from TXECR, when needed.
Following our recommendations on socializing and integrating the cat (or isolating the cat) within your household, as appropriate.
Abiding by our adoption policies and facilitating the cat's adoption (e.g., bringing the cat to adoption locations per appointments).
