***Large Animal Cruelty Case***
The Tri-Lakes Humane Society became involved in an intense Animal Cruelty Case when a report of a skinny horse in Gabriels, NY was made to the NY State Police.
Upon investigation, the horse, a Standardbred Mare, was extremely skinny, and was not being provided proper food and water. There were also 8 chickens, 2 ducks, 2 peacocks, 4 cats, a dog, a guinea pig and a cockatiel that were on the property.
On June 2nd, the NYSP served the owner of the animals with a court order to search his property and to seize all of the animals due to animal cruelty charges. Tri-Lakes Humane Society staff and volunteers from the community joined together in the effort to remove the horse, all of the poultry and fowl, as well as the cats, dog, and a single guinea pig. Not only were the conditions that the animals living in horrendous, but they were not being provided with proper food or clean water on a daily basis. This was huge undertaking for our small Humane Society, and we could not have done it with out the generosity of the volunteers that stepped up to help us.
A total of 20 animals were removed and placed under the care of the Tri-Lakes Humane Society.
The animals are safe, warm and well fed and will never have to suffer from neglect again.

UPDATE 6/20/09: Rosie the horse is doing very well, and is on her way to making a full recovery. A veterinarian from the Vermont Large Animal Veterinary Clinic came and examined her on 6/11/09. The vet was shocked at her condition, but mentioned that with a proper diet and sufficient water she will gain her weight back. He said she will need to gain at least 200lbs to get back to her appropriate weight. After the exam, the vet placed Rosie at at least 20 years old. We are still looking for monetary donations to help cover her food and care costs. If you are interested, please contact us at tlhsny@hotmail.com or call us at (518( 891-0017.
We have also been able to adopt out many of the animals that were seized during this cruelty case. So far we have placed the 2 ducks, 2 peacocks, all 8 chickens, 3 cats, the guinea pig and the cockatiel. They all have found forever loving homes and will have a happy ending to their sad story.
***TLHS Pet Adoptathon Considered a Success***
TLHS Pet Adoptathon at Riverside Park in Saranac Lake, NY
The 15th annual Pet Adoptathon was a success story for our small shelter, drawing both area residents and adopters from over an hour away to the Tri-Lakes Humane Society on May 2nd and May 3rd. We were able to find lifelong loving homes for 11 of our adorable pets! Members from the Adirondack High Peaks Dog Training Club, shelter volunteers, and fun-loving clowns, joined in the effort, making our Pet Adoptathon 2009 a truly memorable event.
Rocksie the Clown & Deb Kreider (Dog Trainer/Groomer) with her dog Ghost were on hand to greet visitors and provide helpful information about dogs
The Tri-Lakes Humane Society was one of thousands of shelters throughout the United States and around the world that participated in Pet Adoptathon 2009, a 36-hour effort which was founded by the North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington, NY. This event has brought tens of thousands of homeless dogs, cats, puppies and kittens together with good adoptive homes.

***Cat Rescued from Bag***
On April 23rd, we received a call from the Saranac Lake Police Department.
Someone had found a cat inside a tied bag in the woods off of Park Avenue, and it needed immediate help.
After spending the night tied in the bag overnight, in the rain, the cat was hypothermic and could not stop its body from shivering. With a body temperaure of 95 degrees, she would not have survived another rainy, cold day. We named her "Lucky Girl", which seemed very fitting.
Read about Lucky Girl at the Adirondack Daily Enterprise website article.
Watch her story on the WPTZ News Channel 5 website.
The investigation into this very cruel act is ongoing with the Village of Saranac Lake Police Dept. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the VSLPD at (518) 891-4422 or the Tri-Lakes Humane Society at (518) 891-0017.
UPDATE: Lucky Girl was adopted on May 1st to a very loving home, where she will be cherished and loved for the rest of her life. She really is one lucky girl!
