Be Kind to Animals Week
The American Humane Association created Be Kind to Animals Week in 1915 to celebrate the unique bond between humans and animals. Every year, animal shelters throughout the country hold special events during this special week to raise awareness about Being Kind to Animals, and to teach people about the amazing role animals play in our lives. Be Kind to Animals Week is a great time to promote our nation's animal welfare organizations and to encourage everyone to get involved to make a difference for animals. The Tri-Lakes Humane Society Staff will be visiting some of the local schools to teach children about being kind to dogs and cats. We will be bringing a Therapy Dog and our shelter mascot/office cat "Amy." (she loves doing humane education with the kids!)
"Be Kind to Animals Week recognizes people whose love of animals has led them to take action to improve animals lives," says Bill Torgerson, American Humane's Vice President of animal programs. "This week especially, make a special point of thanking those who embody kindness through action." In honor of this week, we would like to encourage all families to spend more time appreciating their companion animals. In addition, here are a few suggestions for ways to show kindness to the animals that don't live in your house:
Encourage family and friends to spay or neuter their pets
Create a unique space for wildlife
Report animal abuse or neglect
Volunteer at your local animal shelter
Speak out on the importance of respecting animals
**Dixie Update**
Dixie underwent her first surgery with Dr. Howard and the staff at the Vermont Veterinary Surgical Center in Colchester on November 26th, 2007. Dr. Howard had taken several x-rays of Dixie's legs, and found that she had an old fracture to her left femur. This fracture damaged her growth plate, resulting in her hind left leg growing abnormally. Dixie was scheduled right away for a surgery that would realign her leg and have internal and external rods placed to lengthen her leg at a slow pace. She made it through her surgery, and has been recovering really well. Dixie has such a sweet temperment and personality that the staff at the Surgery Center adore her! She has been so tolerant of everything we have had to do to keep her rods clean, and to keep her from being too active. At first, we had to use a sling to help her move around and to go outdoors. She also had to wear an Elizabethian collar for weeks to keep her from licking at herself, and we joked that she looked like a walking lampshade! We had to be very careful when we had her outdoors on the snow and ice, and she seemed to realize this and she cooperated nicely. After a over a month of recovery, Dixie is getting around much easier, and without much assistance from us. She has remained happy and her spirits have not been dampened by all that she has had to endure. Dr. Howard is very satisfied with how her leg has healed. She has another appointment in Colchester to have the rods removed, and then Dr. Howard will begin to focus on her upcoming hip surgery.
The Tri Lakes Humane Society staff and board members are very proud of Dixie, and even more grateful to the outpouring of support from the community. If you have not had the chance to meet Dixie, please make a trip up to visit with her. She LOVES to meet new people! We will continue to post updates as Dixie progresses through her surgeries, so check back to our website often!
-The TLHS Staff-
We are a small, 501c3 non-profit, no-kill animal shelter and we rely on the generosity of the community. Your tax deductible donations are always needed to support our tasks of healing, caring, and finding forever homes for the homeless pets in our facility.
There are many ways you can help animals in need:
*Donate or make monthly a monthly pledge, either by mail or by stopping by at our shelter.
* Remember us in your will (Call 518-891-0017).
* Make a contribution in memory of, or in honor of a loved on or special pet.
* Donate your time by becoming a volunteer.
* Donate old (or new!) blankets, sheets, collars, leashes, litterpans, dishes, and toys. Food is always welcome, as we have many mouths to feed. (we house cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and the occasional bird.)
Sponsor A Pet Program
* If you cannot adopt from us, please consider sponsoring a pet for yourself or for someone else! A photo of the sponsored pet along with a certificate can be sent to the donor. By sponsoring a pet, you can help pay for that particular pet's vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchip, food and care while they are housed at our shelter. Some of our sponsors also donate gifts, beds and treats for their sponsor pet, which helps to provide the pet with some extra comfort.
For more information on ways to help us, or if you are interested in volunteering, please call 518-891-0017, or send an email to: tlhsny@hotmail.com.

If you have time to spare on a regular, or occasional basis, we can use your help! Any time or talent you have to offer is welcomed! The animals love having visitors, and enjoy the extra attention they receive from volunteers. If you are a dog person, you can help by taking dogs out for walks on our Doggie Trail, playing with them loose in one of our 2 play yards, or by helping us to groom and train them. If cats are more your style, then you can spend your time getting to know all of our feline friends and you can please them with lots of love and affection. We also accept help around the building with cleaning and organizing, as well as some office tasks. Please contact us for more information on volunteering. We always look forward to new people coming on board!
