If you are unable to adopt one of our pets, there are many other ways in which you can help our shelter.
Participating in our "Cash for Critters" program is a great way to help out and best of all it's FREE! Simply donate your used ink cartridges, laser cartridges and cell phones(working or not). We receive credit for having these items recycled. Collection boxes are available at our shelter, the Board of Health Office in the Town Hall Annex, and the Clerk's Office in the Town Hall.

You can help end this tragedy by making sure that your pet does not contribute to the overload- it is part of the responsibility of being a pet owner. Have your pet spayed or neutered by a veterinarian- this is the first, most important step you can take as a responsible pet owner.(Remember, even if you find a home for your pet's puppies or kittens, you are still taking a home away from another companion animal that is waiting in a shelter.) Spayed and neutered pets make better, healthier companions: they are less likely to bite, to spray or mark territory, or to roam and fight. Spayed female dogs and cats do not suffer from uterine or ovarian cancer and have a much smaller incidence of breast cancer. Neutered male dogs and cats have a lower rate of prostate disease and avoid testicular cancer. Contrary to popular belief, sterilized pets do not necessarily become fat and lazy. This happens only if pets are given too much to eat and too little exercise.
If you have a friend, neighbor, or relative who wants a puppy or kitten, urge them to adopt one from a local shelter or rescue group- where there are wonderful purebred and mixed breed pets waiting for good homes. There simply are not enough homes for them all. PLEASE SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PET AND URGE OTHERS TO DO THE SAME. Under the direction of Animal Control Officer, Liz Botelho, the Swansea Animal Shelter provides care and shelter to an annual census of 175 - 200 stray and lost animals per year. Happily, 85-90% of these animals were returned to their owners or found new safe and loving homes! With the aid of volunteers and the Animal Control team, the little "extras" of home are provided. Daily walks, socialization, treats and even car rides help make the time spent at the shelter more comfortable for current residents. Dedicated to the belief that all life has value, the Swansea Animal Shelter looks forward to providing a safe and caring environment for all that pass through its doors.
Who We Are
All of our adoptable animals are vet checked, vaccinated, heartworm tested, microchipped, and given 30 day pet health insurance prior to adoption. All animals, if not done, are also spayed or neutered prior to being placed in a home.The adoption process is fairly simple; there is an application to complete. Once completed the application is reviewed, references are checked and, if approved, the animal is released to the adoption applicant. Adoption fees are as follows: $95.00 for cats and $140.00 for dogs. Please call to schedule an appointment. Adopting a Friend
Our community has an overload of companion animals. Too many dogs and cats are in need of homes, unwanted by their families, so they are treated as disposable items instead of living creatures. Owners abandon pets they have tired of caring for and dump unwanted litters on doorsteps or along roadsides. Countless companion animals suffer and die on the streets, in alleys, or in the wild. Between three and four million cats and dogs are euthanized each year at various shelters throughout the United States because loving, responsible caregivers cannot be found.
The Pet Overpopulation Crisis
The National Council on Pet Population statistics show that only 2% of lost cats are ever reunited with their owner. In Massachusetts alone, an estimated 47,000 stray cats are impounded every year and only about 2,000 are reclaimed by their owners. Had these cats been kept indoors or at least had identification, the numbers would be significantly less. If you are concerned about the safety of your cat while wearing a collar, purchase a safety break away collar that releases if the collar gets caught on an object. Contrary to popular belief, cats cannot fend for themselves. Your cat depends on YOU for care and protection. It is better to tag and collar your cat today than risk tragedy tomorrow. Please provide your cat with identification so that he or she has a chance to make it's way back home. As Animal Control Officers, we see far to often the dangers that free-roaming cats face and it's so easily preventable.

From Rt 195 east or west: Take exit 3 (towards Swansea Mall Dr.)This will put you on Rt.6. Follow Rt.6 east, at the second set of lights turn left onto Gardener' Neck Rd.. Go to the first set of lights. Turn right onto Main St. approximately 1/2 mile up Main St. becomes Stevens Rd. stay on Stevens Rd. approximately 1 - 1 1/2 miles. We are located behind the Swansea Town Hall Annex. You will see a red building on the right side with a sign for the annex out front. Hours are M-F 9am-4pm. Evenings and weekends by appointment only.
