SPECIAL Announcment

News

We are offering a sponsor program were you can help a dog even if you don't have room to adopt it. Simply email us and tell us what dog you would like to help. We will set up what size donation you would like to send and how often you would like to send it. In return you will receive regular updates on the status of that pet, photos of the pet, and a plaque on that dogs crate telling anyone that visits that dog that you are its sponsor and are responsible for helping to keep that dog happy and healthy. You will also be offered the option of staying in contact with any family that adopts the pet you have sponsored. As of March 21, 2003 S.P.A.R.R.O. has been designated as a 501c3 non-profit corporation. Any donation made is now TAX DEDUCTIBLE.

S.P.A.R.R.O. is now able to accept credit cards for our sponsor program.

Who We Are

Southwest Pennsylvania Retriever Rescue Organization or S.P.A.R.R.O. is not your standard rescue, we are a temporary home for wayward, abandoned, unwanted or abused dogs. All dogs that enter our organization are treated as members of a family. They are not sentenced to days upon days locked in crates and kennel runs. We have approximately three acres fenced where the dogs can run and play without any restriction. Dogs that do not get along with the others may spend part of the day in a run, but are taken out and allowed to run for a minimum of 4 to 5 hours per day. At night all dogs come into the house and interact with us, just like they were going to stay forever. Some do stay forever! If a dog is found to not fit in after several attempts at placement or no interest is shown in a particular dog we just make room and he stays for the remainder of his life. S.P.A.R.R.O. IS MOST DEFINITELY A NO-KILL ORGANIZATION! We attempt to crate train all dogs as well as teach them basic commands and how to walk on leash. We strongly believe in the gentle leader and can arrange to supply one with dogs that are adopted.

Adopting a friend

The procedure for adoption is as follows. All prospective adopters are required to foster the pet for a term of not less than 3 weeks. During this time a background and reference check will be preformed. A foster contract is filled out with specific questions concerning the care the dog will be given during these three weeks. At the end of the foster period, if all goes well and the references check out, you will be ask to fill out the adoption contract. The adoption contract is 15 pages and covers all aspects of the dogs care as long as you own it. This contract also includes a spay / neuter clause. If the funds are available all pets are spayed or neutered before adoption. If the dog is less than 9 months of age or the funds are not available, you will be required to have the pet altered at your own expense. All pets will be up to date on all vaccinations and are on heartworm prevention. All pets will have been declared fit to be adopted by our vet and if necessary will be dewormed. To help cover the cost of veterinary care we require a minimum $100 donation on adult dogs at the time of foster. Puppies under the age of 12 months require a $200 donation due to the strict care and amount of extra work involved in their early life. As of March 21, 2003 S.P.A.R.R.O. has been designated as a 501c3 non-profit corporation. Any donation made is now TAX DEDUCTIBLE.

SPARRO reserves the right to accept or decline and person or family as adopters for any reason. The final decision on all adoptions is up to the vote of the board of directors.
