Who We Are

South Hamilton Animal Alliance is a non-profit organization.

The goal of the South Hamilton Animal Alliance is to decrease the number of stray and feral animals by instituting two programs: a Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) program for feral cats, and an adoption program for some of these strays into loving, forever homes.

Within the TNR program, stray cats are captured humanely with a live trap. They are taken to the animal hospital for surgical sterilization, administered a rabies vaccine as required by law, given any additional medical care deemed necessary by the doctor, and released back to their familiar habitat to live their lives, offspring free. By releasing fixed cats back into their environment, we are not only halting the production of kittens, we are also 'vaccinating' the street from an influx of new, unfixed cats. If we were to round up all these cats and kill them, new unfixed cats quickly move into the territory, and we never break the cycle of unwanted litters being created, males fighting, howling late into the night, and other problems unfixed cats tend to create. By releasing fixed cats already living in town, they take up food resources and guard the territory from new unfixed cats. The TNR program is much better received by the public. Neighbors are more likely to support a feral release program than a round-up for killing the cats.

Within the Adoption program, all dogs and cats over 4 months of age will be spayed or neutered prior to adoption. A spay/neuter cash deposit will be required of any animal adopted out prior to being surgically altered. All dogs over the age of one year will be Heartworm tested, and all cats will be tested for Leukemia and FIV. All dogs and cats will be vaccinated for distemper and rabies, dewormed, given any additional medical care deemed necessary by the doctor, and given an identification tag prior to adoption.

Adopting a friend

To adopt one of our homeless huggables, an adoption application must be filled out and approved. A copy of our adoption application is available by email, fax, or on premises. A reasonable adoption fee is charged in order to cover the cost of medical care prior to adoption, as well as to ensure that the adopting family is sincerely interested in the pet's best interest. The adoption fee is non-refundable should the pet be returned to our facilities, as we use the money to help care for other homeless pets. Please call before making a visit, just in case the pet you have interest in has been adopted, or is in a foster home. Adoption fees : Dogs and Puppies $150-$250 Cats and kittens: $55 Adoption of 2 adult cats to live together: $78 *Some fees may be higher or lower, depending on the animal, and the amount of medical care needed prior to adoption. All fees are as listed above unless otherwise noted. ** Remember, these fees include sterilization fees, vaccines, and dewormings, quite a bargain when you think about it.

Come Visit Us!

Housing for our pets is donated by the Jewell Animal Hospital, 548 Main Street, Route 69, in Jewell, Iowa. Regular visiting hours are Monday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm. Wednesday 8:30 am to 6:00pm, and Saturday 9:00am to Noon. The hospital is closed from noon to 1:00 during the weekdays for lunch. We can arrange to have someone there at other times (lunch, evenings, or weekends) for potential families to meet with our homeless huggables.
