| Adopting a Friend At any one time, the Department's three shelters will have hundreds of dogs, cats, and rabbits available for adoption, of all types and varieties. Other domestic animals, such as birds, rodents, or reptiles, are generally available as well. In fact, our shelters in Carlsbad and Bonita often have livestock such as pigs, goats, ducks, and chickens waiting for a new home. Puppies and kittens are most prevalent in the spring and summer months, but do show up in the shelters year round. When there is not a special running, adoption fees are normally $58 for cats and kittens, $69 for dogs and puppies, and $25 for rabbits. (Reduced adoption fees are available for animals five years of age or older as well as for senior citizens/disabled persons.) As part of the Better with a Buddy Program kittens can be adopted in pairs for a reduced fee ($58 for the first kitten and $29 for the second kitten). All cats and kittens are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and tested for feline leukemia (FeLV), and usually FIV as well, before they are released for adoption. The adoption fee includes vaccinations, spay or neutering, medical and behavior evaluation, identification microchipping and, for dogs residing in the Department's service area, a one-year free license. |
