Reduced Adoption Fees for Cats and Kittens

COUNTY INTRODUCES PET ADOPTION INITIATIVES TO EASE OVERCROWDING Department of Animal Services Waives Many Adoption Fees for Cats and Dogs Beginning May 31, 2009 Due to a seasonal influx of animals in the County's three animal shelters, the Department of Animal Services will waive all adoption fees, beginning this Saturday, May 31, 2009 through Aug. 30, 2009 for cats 6 months and older, and all dogs 5 years and over. In addition, the adoption fee for any cat or dog that has been at the shelter for 30 days will also be waived. Only two animals per person can be adopted. Also, as part of the Better with a Buddy Program kittens can be adopted in pairs for a reduced fee ($58 for the first kitten and $29 for the second kitten). All cats and kittens are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and tested for feline leukemia (FeLV), and usually FIV as well, before they are released for adoption. Animals unable to be altered at the time of adoption require a $40 refundable sterilization deposit.

About This Page

The County of San Diego operates three animal shelters -- in Bonita, Mission Valley and Carlsbad. This page features animals available for adoption to the public at the NORTH shelter (in Carlsbad) only. The South Shelter in Bonita, and the Central Shelter in Mission Valley are now on Petfinder as well!

Our Petfinder listings are maintained by volunteers. While we make every effort to update our Petfinder listings as often as possible, we recommend visiting our main website at http://www.sddac.com for the most comprehensive and up-to-date list of adoptable animals. Of course, nothing beats visiting the shelters in person! Come on down and find your new companion animal today!

If you are looking for your lost pet, please visit http://www.sddac.com/ and go to "Lost and Found" on the left-hand menu.
Adopting a Friend

At any one time, the Department's three shelters will have hundreds of dogs, cats, and rabbits available for adoption, of all types and varieties. Other domestic animals, such as birds, rodents, or reptiles, are generally available as well. In fact, our shelters in Carlsbad and Bonita often have livestock such as pigs, goats, ducks, and chickens waiting for a new home.

Puppies and kittens are most prevalent in the spring and summer months, but do show up in the shelters year round. When there is not a special running, adoption fees are normally $58 for cats and kittens, $69 for dogs and puppies, and $25 for rabbits. (Reduced adoption fees are available for animals five years of age or older as well as for senior citizens/disabled persons.) The adoption fee includes vaccinations, spay or neutering, medical and behavior evaluation, identification microchipping and, for dogs residing in the Department's service area, a one-year free license.
