SAFE is a rescue group working in the TRI-CITY area to save cats and dogs from the local pounds. We are the only rescue group pulling animals from the Hopewell Pound, and we also try our best to pull aimals from several other pounds in the area when possible. We have been working to rescue animals for 7 years now, and we are a nonprofit rescue group. We need you to help us in our continued efforts, so please consider joining us. Many of our rescued pets are available for adoption at the following locations:
We urgently need new foster homes for puppies, kittens and cats. We provided medical care and food. You provide love and tender care. If you would like to work with animals and help them find new homes, please drop us a note by email at savinganimals@hotmail.com. Not able to foster, no problem you don't have to foster animals to get involved in saving lives. There are many aspects to rescuing that just might fit the time you have to give. Drop us a note and let us see how we can help you help animals in need!
Please don't throw out your unwanted pets on the side of the road, near a farm or elsewhere. Many domestic animals meet their horrifying death by becoming food for raccoons, dogs, etc., or killed by people. If you love them, contact a rescue group weeks ( or better yet months) in advance of giving up your pet for help and participate in the placement of your pet. Also, offer a donation to the group to help defray costs should they have to take the animal back in after placement, etc. Be a positive advocate to get your new pet rehomed. They are not just animals but part of your family. You wouldn't leave your child on the side of the road! Read poor little Nate's story on our pet list.
LOOKING FOR THAT JUST RIGHT PET BUT DON'T SEE IT ONLINE, CONTACT US BY EMAIL AS MANY OF OUR PETS DON'T HAVE THEIR PICTURES UP AND MAY BE WAITING IN A FOSTER HOME FOR THEIR NEW FAMILY!
SAFE has cats and kittens are available to be seen during the week at PETSMART in Colonial Heights. However, for a chance to meet them in person, please contact us by email or phone. We can make sure a volunteer is there to show you the cats. Pre-applications preferred first. Please stop by and see those that are available for adoption. If you see a new furry friend that you would like to add to your family, please visit our website and request a pre-application form by email. PRE-APPLICATION FORMS AVAILABLE BY EMAIL AND MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO ADOPTION. THANK YOU.
SAFE needs volunteers in the Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Enon, Henrico, Hanover, and Goochland areas. If you have a few spare hours to share helping us with some wonderful animals, please consider volunteering with us. Fostering an animal is not the only type of help we need. We need people to answer phones, help at adoption stands, working on newsletters, raising funds, collecting donations, transporting to and from various events, etc., paperwork, and more. Foster homes are always needed, but we also need volunteers for many other jobs as stated above. If fostering an animal is for you, SAFE provides for the medical care, so you won't have to. The best way for an animal to get adopted is living in a foster home temporarily. Foster homes can give so much more information about the pets personality, behavior, and quirks. This makes placing the animal much easier and in most cases the home is a better permanent home because they know what to expect from the new pet. The reward of seeing an animal go into a loving home makes it all worthwhile. Help turn a sad and lonely creature into a happy and most loved pet! Email savinganimals@hotmail.com immediately.
SAFE cares for many animals that are in need of surgeries or medical treatments. This costs a great deal of money, but we feel it is all worth it for the sake of the animal. However, our adoption fees do not cover these extra medical costs. Therefore, we are always in need of donations to help these creatures as they come and go into our care. Please consider making a donation to help us continue to rescue those animals that otherwise would not make it. People are not perfect and animals aren't either. We don't throw away people, lets not throw away the animals. Donations can be made by contacting us by email at savinganimals@hotmail.com.
PLEASE remember to SPAY or NEUTER your pet today!! Prevent needless births to prevent the needless deaths of many who end up or could end up at the pounds. Too many people are giving up their faithful pets due to moving, pregnancy, allergies, vacations, not enough time for them, litters born and unwanted, etc. Thinking that the pounds will find them homes or a rescue group will save them. Think again! Space continues to be an issue for many pounds, shelters, and rescue groups. Foster homes are limited. So please reconsider giving up an animal who has been your constant companion. At the pound it may mean certain death. Try other alternatives. Please for the sake of your pet!
PLEASE NOTE: If you are unable to leave a message on our phone line, PLEASE email us and we will be glad to help you. We all work and it is possible to get a much quicker response by email.
Please remember that we are a non-profit group. All funds raised go back to the animals. Help us keep it that way. If you must call, please be willing to accept collect calls or contact us at
S.A.F.E. doesn't just place animals - we are dedicated to matching pets with people in order to create a forever friendship and family. Please contact us to fill out an adoption application and we will recommend the pets that meet your criteria. When you are ready to adopt your forever friend, S.A.F.E. does require an adoption contract. All S.A.F.E. pets are spayed/neutered, UTD on routine inoculations, and tested for lifethreatening diseases (e.g., Feline Leukemia or Heartworms).
Please call (804-751-4501) for adoption and location hours. Also, feel free to stop by any of our locations during business hours to see the cats/kittens available for adoption. If you would like to meet one of our pets up close, please give us a call to arrange an appointment.(located in Short Pump at the corner of Pouncy Tract and Nuckols Road)
Don't have a lot of time to spare but would like to help in animal rescue?? We need animal loving individuals that would like to volunteer and come out once a month on Saturdays to help with adoption stands at our Colonial Heights location. Please consider giving to those animals in need 3-4 hours once a month to find loving homes and get back more in satisfaction, unconditional love, and content from helping these wonderful creatures find forever homes. Who doesn't need a great feeling day!! Contact us today at savinganimals@hotmail.com or 804-751-4501.
Help us help them in 2008. Please spay and neuter your pet and encourage others to do so. Consider opening your home and heart by adopting an abandoned animal in 2008
Please contact SAFE if you have a positive feline lukemia kitty or feline aids kitty who would like a companion. We often have positive cats that are in great health that are in need of a home. Our positive kitties are spayed/neutered, current on rabies and other shots. Please inquire at savinganimals@hotmail.com!

S.A.F.E. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to reduce the number of intakes at the pounds by promoting spay/neuter and to rescue as many pets as possible from euthanasia at the pounds.
