THE ADOPTION PROCESS
Our adoption process is focused on the welfare of the animals. It includes an application, personal and vet reference check, and a brief interview. Our goal is to do what is in the best interest of each animal in our care. The adoption fee for dogs and puppies is $175.00. The adoption fee for cats and kittens is $75.00.
A fee may be reduced if an applicant is approved to adopt more than one animal at the same time.
In an effort to place senior dogs and cats into loving homes our adoption fee for a senior dog over seven (7) years is only $100 and for a senior cat over six (6) years only $60. Our cats are adopted to indoor homes only.
Please take time to look over our available pets on this web site, www.sanilac.petfinder.org, where you can see their pictures and download the adoption application.
All of our rescued animals are first examined by veterinarians who work with us, administering the necessary tests and shots to assure that the animals are healthy. Our animals receive shelter, food, vaccinations, de-worming, micro-chipping and other often costly medical attention in an effort to restore them to health and prepare them for adoption. As required by Michigan law, all animals are spayed or neutered. Consequently, our veterinary bills are the biggest single category of expenses. We are able to recover only a portion of our total cost through adoption fees.
GENERAL INFORMATION
When offering a pet for adoption, most often we don't know much about their past. We only know that they came to us with broken hearts. Someone they loved, rejected their love and turned away from them. They may still grieve and long for their past special people.
They are under great stress and experience lots of anxiety; some may even be difficult initially and need patient, determined love to gain their trust.
Often times a dog's prominent breed isn't always known so often the best we can do is venture a guess with regard to breed. They all wait for the right special person who will offer them another chance to have a family and home of their own in return for their unconditional loyalty and love. Homeless pets are waiting for you to give them another chance in life.
Do you have questions regarding our policies or procedures at the shelter? Please feel free to call a knowledgeable staff member and learn the facts rather than repeating misinformation or someone's uninformed beliefs. Seek the truth about us and our mission of rescuing and finding homes for unwanted dogs and cats.
It is not easy. Our county is full of homeless dogs and cats. Many are often neglected or abandoned by their owners and left to fend for themselves. We also try to rescue as many animals as we can from Animal Control, to prevent them from being euthanized. We are proud that in 2008 we have accepted 322 dogs and cats into the shelter. Of those 322 brought in, 11 passed away, 8 were happily reunited with their families and 294 were placed in loving homes. Because we are a "no kill" shelter, those not adopted still live with us. Predictably, there are always calls coming in from owners that, for a variety of reasons, wish to surrender their pets, but they do not want them killed.
“Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to
stop there is not enough.”

WHO WE ARE
HISTORY OF OUR HUMANE SOCIETY ANIMAL SHELTER
Sanilac County Humane Society was founded as a 501(c)3 non-profit, "no-kill" shelter in 1996. The Humane Society shelter is located on the corner of Sheldon Street, and Marsh St., in Carsonville, just one block south of the Project Blessing Thrift Store. We continue to be a small, independent, volunteer-operated shelter, dedicated to rescuing homeless, abandoned or owner-surrendered companion animals, and finding them good and loving permanent homes.
Although we call ourselves Sanilac County Humane Society, we are not a county agency but an independent, "no kill", non-profit, tax-exempt shelter supported solely by volunteers and donations. Whenever possible, we tell others about ourselves. We speak to community groups, write letters to the editors, submit articles to the local press and showcase adoptable pets here on our web site.
We seek sponsors for our popular animal adoption column in "The Jeffersonian" and "Sanilac County News"; encourage or write stories about our animals and our shelter in the local press.
As more volunteers join us, we brainstorm on fundraising and other means of seeking funds and donations from the community, since we are not supported by any federal, state or county agency, or any state or national humane organization. We participate in community affairs offering information about our animal rescue efforts and about responsible pet ownership.
Although we have many supporters and sympathizers, we have only very few active volunteers willing to regularly work with the rescued pets and take care of their needs. Our two constant, greatest needs are volunteers and donations. Without them, our effort to rescue homeless animals cannot continue.
