Our Featured Dog: Brindle Chihuahua, C14-000298
I am an adult female Chihuahua. I came to the shelter on Feb 28th as a stray and was terribly fearful with all the loud noises here in the shelter. I was placed in the small dog wing and see the familiar faces of the Animal Care staff who feed me, clean my cage, give me toys and soft blankets to snuggle in. A little apprehensive of new people, I am beginning to trust people once again and realize they mean no harm. I'm not a young puppy. I would be the ideal companion for a single adult or a couple. Not sure how I react to kids -- probably too much energy for me. I would love to go home with someone to be their best buddy. Why not stop by to meet me and see if we are a good match. If you have a dog at home, I would like to meet it too -- to see if we get along. Won't you consider giving me a second chance? And if I am not the right match for you, there are many other choices to select your new best friend!.
Our Featured Cat, C143-000165 Tabi, Domestic Short Hair, Black Cat
I am a neutered male Domestic Short Hair Black cat. I came into the shelter as a stray on Feb 6th, and although I am microchipped, my owner has not come to claim me. It's been a month now, and I am ready to go home to a family that wants me. I'm already neutered, so can go home with you right away. Stop by the shelter and take some time to meet me. And if we are not the perfect match, there are many other possibilities awaiting here at the shelter!

Lost and Found Pets
If you have found an animal, please report it to Rio Rancho Animal Control at (505) 891-5075. When stray pets are picked up or brought to Rancho Animal Control, we check for tags and scan for microchips. If owner information is available, we contact the owner. If your pet is lost, we suggest you stop by the shelter to see if we have it. Even though we try to get photos of all animals in the shelter, we may not have the photo posted on our Petfinder site at the time you check the website...so please, stop by if you have lost your pet. We have had some wonderful reunions at the shelter. We are delighted to reunite lost pets with their owners and remind pet owners to affix your city license AND an ID tag to your pet's collar so that we can quickly reach you if your pet shows up at the shelter. Even better -- get a microchip implanted in your pet. The microchip contains only an ID number -- no personal information is contained on the microchip. If your pet is already microchipped, you should periodically contact the microchip company (AVID, HomeAgain, AKC, 24PetWatch, etc) to ensure that they have your current contact information. More often than not, we have pets enter the shelter with a microchip and old outdated information. We are unable to reach the owner. If you don't know what type of microchip your pet has, we will be happy to scan it and provide you with the information you need so you can contact the microchip company.
Rio Rancho city licenses are just $4 for spayed/neutered animals, and $2 for senior citizens. The city license for unaltered animals is $25. City licenses enable the shelter to quickly locate the owner as long as the address/phone on file is current.
All stray animals are held for seven (7) days to allow owners time to reclaim their pet. Unclaimed, non-aggressive animals, are then available for adoption. During the 7-day period, animals may be reserved for adoption by an interested party. If the owner does not reclaim the animal by the end of the 7-day period, the interested party may come in and complete adoption paperwork.
