If you live near or are willing to come to the St. Louis
area, we can usually make arrangements for you to
meet dogs between adoption events. We will need
to have an application in hand before a meeting takes place.
We check our email several times a day!

Harley:
Harley is a little Chinese Crested-Terrier Boy.
Harley has traveled quite a bit in order to make it into rescue.
His journey started in Texas on death row in a high kill shelter. Many people
worked together to get this boy to St. Louis. Harley met many friendly people
on his way here, but now he is ready to meet his forever family. Harley is
still coming out of his shell- and will require a family that can give him the love
and care he deserves. Harley does well with other dogs, and has been using
wee wee pads and the doggie door while in foster care.
We estimate Harley to be about 2 years old; he is
up to date on shots and is neutered. Harley’s adoption fee is $200.00

All of our dogs are in fostered in our homes. They are fed premium dog food, temperament tested, altered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, on monthly heartworm preventive, and fecal tested prior to adoption. RCCR does not adopt out dogs on a first come, first serve basis. Because we want this to be a permanent adoption, we will place the dog in the home best suited for him/her. We can not hold dogs for homes that are not ready to adopt yet or have not yet been approved. RCCR is 100% spay/neuter prior to adoption. We do NOT make exceptions so please do not ask. If we have puppies available, they will not be available to go to an adoptive home until they are spayed or neutered.

Sponsor A Dog!!
We absolutely love the feeling of helping animals in need, and would like you to feel that joy also. Frequently dogs come into our care that suffer from injuries, chronic illnesses, abuse, neglect and in some cases all of these horrible things combined. As a result, they need specialized treatment including Veterinary care, prescription medicine, surgery, special food, behavioral training and much more. Sponsoring a dog helps-offset the costs of providing food, shelter, spay/neuter surgery and veterinary care and much more. Because Adoption Fees only cover part of our expenses- your donation is a greatly appreciated balance. Most of the dogs that face these challenges would likely be considered lost causes at other shelters and destroyed as a result. At River City Chihuahua Rescue we allow all of our rescued dogs as much time as they need to find a special owner who can care for them. After adoption we continue to provide support and the promise that we will always accept the dogback if the owners circumstances change, no questions asked.

This is Deacon the White Schnauzer's Story:

__________________
Deacon came into rescue very recently. He was in a Shelter in Central Missouri- probably counting down his last days. The Shelter said "His ears need some Vet work", well I guess they did! As you can tell from the pictures above Deacon is battling a pretty fierce ear infection. See all of the dark nasty stuff in the top pictures! Could you imagine that in your ears? That is pus. Deacon’s fur was also very matted. While Deacon is now in good hands, he has a long recovery ahead of him. Be a part of it! Even the smallest Donations help cover his vet care and medications. We will be updating his progress as it happens- so check back often!

This is Biscuit the Shih Tzu's story:
Biscuit came into rescue with the cutest personality, but also an invasive fungal infection.
Not to mention secondary infections from an open, weeping sore on his neck. His skin is often bright red from the infection and he has no hair on the front of his neck or chest. Ever had an itch you just can't scratch or an embarrassing sun burn? Well this little guy knows the feeling. He gets special medicated baths twice a week, he's a very good boy in the bath, tolerating the requisite 5 - 10 minute soak like a trooper. We are sure he knows this will make him better, and we are willing to incur the cost. But a little help goes along way. This little guy deserves a chance, help us in making that happen. UPDATE!! Biscuit is now being Fostered by Tammy. Here is what she had to say: Biscuit is doing great. His skin is looking really good and his eyes are doing great too. We trimmed up his hair on his face and gave him a sanitary. Plus trimmed his front legs to get the scabbs loosend up on his legs, which are beginning to come off as he gets his baths. He is part pekingese that is what Jen my friend the groomer says, the curly tail, and the coat is different and the ears... he is really loyal, loves kids, he looks for them when they leave for school....lol he is a good dog.
Hooray for Biscuit! What'a Lucky Dog!

This is Stroker the Yorkie/Chinese Crested's story:
Stroker is a 2 year old Yorkie/Chinese Crested mix. He was in a high kill shelter in Texas and sure to be euthanized. With the help of many volunteers who transport dogs all across the midwest every weekend, we were able to get him to Missouri only to find that he was heartworm positive. Heartworm infestation is fatal and must be treated. The treatment is very expensive and physically hard on the dogs but Stroker came though like a champ. He'll be on cage rest for 4 - 6 weeks and will then be available for adoption. His adoption fee will be $200 although his vet fees will far exceed that amount. When we agreed to take Stroker into rescue, we made a lifetime commitment to him and we intend to see that through. We will give him whatever he needs to be healthy, happy and ready for adoption.

In August, 2006, we branched off from a long association with Chihuahua Rescue and Transport in order to have a more local focus. We love CRT and are modeling ourselves after the high standards of that wonderful organization. You may have noticed that we have also branched out from chihuahuas. As we were doing shelter pulls, it became harder and harder to pull chihuahuas for rescue and leave behind other small breed dogs that we knew were highly adoptable. So we started taking them also.Chihuahuas are first in our hearts but we have been very successful in finding wonderful homes for doxies, miniature pinschers and various terriers. If we have the means, the desire and the drive to rescue them as well, how could we not? I guess we should start calling ourselves River City Canine Rescue. River City Chihuahua Rescue is a non-profit organization in the state of Missouri with 501(c)3 status through our association with Rescue Alliance of Hairless & Other Breeds, Inc., a nationwide 501(c)3 non-profit animal rescue organization. We have no paid employees. We are a local, internet-based organization dedicated to the rescue, medical care and adoption of stray and homeless small breed dogs in need. We help control the growing overpopulation by spaying and neutering all dogs in our care. We provide all necessary veterinary treatment and place them in foster homes until they are adopted into forever homes. Whenever possible, RCCR also raises public awareness regarding the abuse and neglect of small breed dogs as well as overpopulation caused by not spaying and neutering.
