News

On March 1, 2006, our department started our new, "Senior to Senior", program. This program will allow citizens of Queen Anne's County who are 60 years of age or older, to adopt any animal from our shelter and we will waive the adoption fee. The only cost to the adopter will be for microchipping, rabies vaccination, dog license, and spay / neuter fees. This program will also be extended to all citizens of Queen Anne's County that wish to adopt an animal that is 6 years old or older, or any animal deemed to be a special needs animal. Special needs animals are animals that have medical conditions, special behavioral problems or other needs that require additional care above and beyond the normal veterinarian care. Please stop by the Shelter or call us if you have any questions about this new and exciting program.

Our new pet adoption show, "Data's Place" is now up and running on QACTV Channel 7. The show runs; Sunday @ 7 am, Monday @ 7 pm, Tuesday @ 7:30 pm, Wednesday @ 8 pm, Thursday @ 11 pm, Friday @ 11pm and Saturday @ 7:30 am. We thank you in advance for watching.

Did you know you can support the homeless animals of Queen Anne’s County simply by purchasing your family’s groceries? It’s true. Adopt-A-Pet, Inc., the shelter’s all-volunteer nonprofit organization fundraises throughout the year to help Queen Anne’s homeless animals with emergency medical care, heartworm treatment, as well as other programs, and was a generous contributor toward the realization of the spay-neuter clinic at the shelter.

Now you can help Adopt-A-Pet assist animals in need each time you purchase your family’s groceries by registering your MVP card in the Food Lion Shop & Share Program. Here’s how it works: You purchase groceries at your local Food Lion grocery store. The cashier swipes your MVP card during check-out. That’s all there is to it. Food Lion records the total cost of the transaction and a percentage of your grocery bill is automatically credited to Adopt-A-Pet, Inc., at no additional cost to you! Each quarter Food Lion will send a check to Adopt-A-Pet, representing all grocery transactions for that quarter.

Now it’s easy to help Queen Anne’s animals in need, with no cost to you. To participate in the Food Lion Shop & Share program, we need a minimum of 25 participants. Please reregister your MVP card each January to Adopt-A-Pet (Chester, Md.) at Food Lion’s web site at: http://www.foodlion.com. If you do not have a computer, you can contact Food Lion Customer Relations at 704-633-8250, extension 3810, and they will enter your information for you. Still have a question? Please e-mail Kimberley VanDerveer at doxierescue@dmv.com or call 410-758-8718. Thank you in advance for helping our animals in need!

Our new Spay/Neuter Clinic was dedicated on Saturday, October 18, 2003. We have an operating room and a recovery room here in the Animal Control Center Office Building. The clinic is being used to spay and neuter animals adopted from the shelter. It will not be open to the public. As of November 4, 2005, we have preformed over 620 surgeries. The clinic was constructed completely from grants and donations and did not involve taxpayer dollars. We are very proud of our new clinic and many thanks go out to the staff at the Department of Animal Control, Steve Wilson, Susy Wentink, Adopt-A-Pet Inc., Synder Foundation for Animals and the many private donations that made the clinic a reality.

The Queen Anne's County Animal Control Commission has just submitted revisions to the Animal Control Regulations that will make them more comprehensive and complete. The new revisions are complete and have been adopted by the Queen Anne's County Commissioners. The new regulations went into effect on December 4, 2005. We thank all the citizens who came forward with suggestions and comments to improve the new regulations.

The Queen Anne's County Animal Control Commission meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.

A Little About Us

We are a division of the Queen Anne's County Government. We have been in existence since 1977. We just opened a new Animal Services Building here on our site. This building now houses all of the animals here at the Animal Control Center. The existing building was both a publishing company and a veterinarian office. The orginal office building, which use to be our kennel also, was build in the 1950's. Some of our many duties include; investigating cruelty complaints, investigating barking dog complaints and other nusiance complaints, humane education, adoption programs, volunteer programs, working with county and state law enforcement agencies, working with the Department of Natural Resources and many other duties.

Adopting A Friend

Adopting a pet is a very serious endeavor. We must take our time and choose the pet that will fit into our lifestyle and our family. We have many older pets that are in need of a good home. Before you buy think about your local shelter !!! There are millions of pets each year that must be put to sleep because there are not enough good homes for them. Please help our shelter and shelters around the country work towards a day when there will be no more unwanted pets !!!
