PETCO adoption events: Most Sundays we have an adoption event at the Morgantown WV PETCO for cats & kittens.Did you know The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) offers a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in dogfighting or cockfighting? The Preston County Animal Shelter is a municipal animal control facility located in Kingwood, in northcentral West Virginia. (MapQuest to Kingwood, WV, then see local map below for directions to the shelter.) We are about a 2 hour drive from Pittsburgh, PA; around a 3-1/2-hour drive from northern VA and the Washington, DC area; about a 4-hour drive from Columbus or Cincinnati, OH, and a 5-6 hour drive from the Philadelphia area, Delaware, and southern NJ.We are the only animal control facility in a large, rural county. Space is limited and intake is high, so pets often do not remain very long. We are not a no-kill shelter, and our adoption/rescue rate is approximately 40%, with puppies and toy breed adult dogs having the highest adoption rate, adult dogs over 15 lbs., cats, and kittens having the lowest. If you are seriously interested in a pet listed here, please contact us as soon as possible. We also may have pets available that are not listed here. In particular, small breed dogs and puppies are sometimes adopted the same day they arrive and don't even make it onto our Petfinder site. So if you are looking for a type of pet that you do not see listed here, please contact us or stop by on adoption day.

We aim to provide humane, compassionate and professional service to the people and animals of Preston County through care, shelter, adoption and education; for the dignity and well being of all.
The PCAS urges the public to adopt responsibly. Whether you adopt a pet from our shelter or from another source, please adopt any pet only if you reasonably expect to be able to provide proper care and love for the pet for its entire life and if you will spay/neuter your pet to help control pet overpopulation and its tragic consequences.Adoption Requirements and Fees
You must be at least 18 years of age to adopt. If you rent your home, you must have your landlord's permission to have a pet. Adopters must submit an adoption application. The adoption fee for unaltered pets is $75.00, $50.00 of which is refunded upon receipt of proof of spay/neuter. Spay/neuter is mandatory and enforced by law. Pets six months of age and over must be altered within 30 days of adoption, puppies/kittens within 30 days of when pet is 6 months of age. The adoption fee for pets that are already spayed/neutered is $50.00. Adopter must have the pet examined by a veterinarian with seven days, and we strongly recommend a vet visit immediately after adoption for kittens and puppies.Adoption Days/Times
At the shelter, Mondays & Wednesdays 11AM-7PM and the first & third Saturdays of the month 9AM-noon. Some of our cats and kittens are also at the Morgantown, WV PETCO most Saturdays. If you are in our local area, please stop by the shelter or adoption event to meet the pets and apply to adopt.Out-of-Area Adoptions
We are out-of-state adopter-friendly; adopters must travel to the shelter or adoption event.
We make every effort to provide you with a healthy pet. However, as a public animal control facility, we cannot guarantee the health of any pet. In the event that the adopter or rescue's veterinarian determines within seven days that a pet was medically unsuitable for adoption at the time of adoption or rescue, the adoption or shelter fee and any spay/neuter deposit paid will be refunded.
We are rescue-friendly to established, reputable rescue groups. Those wishing to rescue animals must submit a rescue application, provide veterinary references, pay a small fee per animal, and return proof of spay/neuter within 30 days of rescue (puppies/kittens within 30 days of when pet is 6 months of age).Volunteers - We can always use responsible adult volunteers to assist with many areas of shelter operation, including office work, digital photography for Petfinder listings, adoptions, pet intake, cleaning, direct pet care, and transporting pets to veterinary appointments and rescues. Please contact the shelter for additional information.2) Donations - We are always grateful for your thoughtful donations. In particular, the shelter is always in need of black and color ink cartridges for a Dell all-in-one 962 printer, pet collars, leashes, combs, brushes, shampoo, toys, towels, blankets, and kitten & puppy food. We can also always use donations of cleaning supplies such as bleach, Odo-Ban, Pine-Sol, scrub brushes, and cleaning towels.
3) We need for all pet owners to have their pets spayed or neutered! Pet overpopulation is the main reason that so many good pets end up euthanized at our shelter. Despite our efforts to find a home or rescue for every adoptable pet we receive, there simply are not enough homes for all of them. Please help us change this tragic fact. Every adoptable pet deserves a long, happy life in a loving home, but only responsible pet ownership can make our goal of not ever having to euthanize an adoptable pet a reality.
