This is Lizzie. Lizzie was seized from a home because she was not being taken care of. As you can tell she was severely underweight. She was seen by the vet and it was found she had bladder cancer. We were going to give this sweet young girl a shot at a good life and do surgery on her but sadly she died two days after... she was in our custody. We are looking for help with her vet bills. If you can help please send your donation to the Porter Count Animal Shelter @ 2056 Heavilin Rd. Valparaiso, IN 46385 and make a note that it is "for Lizzie." Thanks so much. On July 27th our Animal Control was called out at 12:00 a.m. to an accident on 80-94 westbound at the Chesterton exit. A cattle hauler hit another semi and started on fire. Many of the cows had to be euthanized. Six of the 34 cows were running on the highway. We worked all night trying to contain the cows so they wouldn’t cause an accident. When everything was over one cow was missing. Around 6:30 p.m. on the 27th the missing cow was found. It wasn’t a cow at all it was a bull. We brought him back to the shelter. He was bruised on his left side and his front left leg was injured. We called out Dr. Smith from Laporte. Dr. Smith had come back to the accident scene to do what he could to help. Anyway Dr. Smith took care of the bull, which we now call Charcoal, and said he would be fine.
We didn’t want to send him back to a farm where someone would be used for food. We felt he had been through enough and was given a second chance. We told Bob Kasarda from the times new paper about the bull and that we needed help placing him. Bob made some calls and contacted someone from a sanctuary and started everything rolling. The farm sanctuary called us and is willing to take Charcoal and let him live out his life. I guess we really are their shelter and you are their future!
