Franklin County Humane Society Inglath and Mac Cooper no kill Adoption Center opens

The Franklin County Humane Society will open their new no kill Adoption Center on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. The Adoption Center is named in honor of Inglath and Mac Cooper.

Inglath Cooper grew up in Franklin County with a grandfather who took her with him on visits to the shelter to pick out a dog. "My memories of the sad animals there have stayed with me all my life. I so strongly believe that our county needs a positive, heartwarming place to go to adopt dogs and cats who need a family."

Along with Inglath, Mac Cooper, president of Uttermost, became convinced of the need to get involved with the rescue of shelter dogs and cats after witnessing first hand the wonderful animals who end up there through no fault of their own. "It's hard to believe that loving, adoptable pets end up in such situations, but through fostering dogs at our home while they wait to be placed with a permanent family, we've seen proof of it again and again."

The Adoption Center is a two story addition to the Humane Society’s Planned Pethood Clinic building and has a cat community room with cat condos, a kitten room, a puppy room with puppy play pens, large doggie dens, a grooming room, animal food kitchens, reception area, and exercise and leash training areas. The Adoption Center was designed to be safe and comfortable for the animals and a cheerful place for the people who come to adopt, work or volunteer. The building has large storefront windows that bring in light and allow the animals to be seen from outside of the building.

Humane Society President Donna Essig said “I call that our free advertising. We chose to build in a highly visible location which is not typical of shelters. Often animal shelters are out of sight, out of mind. Our intent is to market the animals as just as valuable or even more valuable than those in a pet store or from a breeder. Rescued animals are always so appreciative of their adoptive homes. People will drive by and see the animals and say let’s stop in and visit. We hope to be the first place that they think about when they are ready to add a pet to their family.”

Essig continued, “So many people have come together to make this happen. 178 people have made donations ranging from $10 to $250,000. This is going to be such an important place not only for the animals, but for everyone in Franklin County to take pride in having a Humane Society with progressive programs like Planned Pethood Spay Neuter Clinic and the no kill Adoption Center.”

There are naming opportunities for Doggie Dens, Puppy Play Pens and Cat Condos still available. All donations made during the Building Campaign will be permanently recognized in the Adoption Center reception area as Adoption Center Founding Donors.

The Adoption Center will be open Tuesdays –Fridays from 2-5:30 PM and on Saturdays from 10 AM- 2 PM. Adoption Center Director Karin Perala and Rescue Volunteers Jenny Richardson, Betsy Richardson and Anita Scott will evaluate and transfer available animals from the animal control facility to the Humane Society. Appointments for evaluation will be necessary for animals received from owners. All animals will be health checked at the Humane Society’s Planned Pethood Clinic where they will be spayed/neutered and receive all necessary immunizations and tests before being moved into the Adoption Center.

Naming opportunities are still available. Put your name on a Puppy Play Pen or a Kitty Condo and help homeless pets in our area.

Spay Neuter Assistance Program

The Franklin County Humane Society received a $15,645 grant to neuter 312 pets of qualified low income Franklin County residents. The Humane Society’s Planned Pethood Clinic has spayed/neutered over 29,500 animals as part of its goal to stop pet overpopulation.

Pet overpopulation is the number one issue facing companion animals today. More than five million pets are euthanized annually because there aren’t enough homes for them. It costs U.S. taxpayers an estimated $2 billion each year to take in, care for, and unfortunately sometimes euthanize homeless animals. For most communities, low-income residents are among those who are least likely to be able to afford to spay/neuter. Extra funding for the sterilizing of the pets may have the biggest impact if it specifically targets the pets of these residents.

Applicants for this Spay Neuter Assistance Program (S.N.A.P.) will be required to provide proof of Social Services eligibility and a photo id with proof of Franklin County residency. Applicants will be charged $10 for the neuter & rabies vaccine. The $10 fee will be put back into the S.N.A.P. program to “spay it forward” to provide an additional 79 neuters for a total of 391 neuters.

The Humane Society’s goal is to reduce the number of litters of kittens and puppies being brought to the Humane Society or to the Franklin County Animal Control Shelter or being abandoned at county dumpster sites. The initial focus will be to spay female dogs and cats as that will have the quickest impact of reducing the number of litters being born next spring.

The first round of appointments will be limited to one cat and one dog per family. Applicants are asked to call the Humane Society’s Planned Pethood Clinic at (540)489-3491 to schedule an appointment. This offer will be limited to the first 391 pets but may be extended if donations are received to sponsor additional neuters.

“We are happy that PetSmart Charities has made it possible for us to be able to offer this program to Franklin County residents,” said Donna Essig, President of the Franklin County Humane Society. “We hope that these targeted sterilizations will have a major impact on the numbers of puppies and kittens being brought to area shelters next spring and will reduce the number of homeless or feral animals in our area.”

HUMANE SOCIETY CARES FOR 846 ANIMALS IN 2008

Franklin County Humane Society staff and volunteers cared for 846 homeless animals in 2008. 387 of the animals came from the county’s animal control shelter. The remainder of the animals came from owners, other animal welfare agencies or were strays.

The Humane Society’s unique cat transport program is named the Kitty Cat Railroad (KCRR). The KCRR touched the lives of 467 cats and kittens in 2008. Through its connection with Last Chance Animal Rescue in Maryland, the Humane Society was able to transfer 299 of cats and kittens to be adopted out at multiple PetsMart stores in northern Virginia and Maryland. Another 20 felines were transported to local rescue groups and more than 80 cats and kittens were adopted locally.

“The difference we made this year is staggering!” said Betsy Richardson, a volunteer who coordinates the Kitty Cat Railroad program. “To see that the Kitty Cat Railroad has helped 467 cats takes my breath away.”

350 dogs and puppies were cared for by foster volunteers. Jenny Richardson and Anita Scott coordinate the intake and care of the dogs and puppies and spend countless hours on the computer and phone arranging volunteer schedules and animal placement and transport. 267 dogs were transferred to other animal welfare groups and 56 dogs and puppies were adopted locally.

The most common dog breeds cared for by the Humane Society in 2008 were Labs/Lab mixes (93), Hunting Breeds (80) including 37 beagles and 39 hounds, and 34 Shepherds/Shepherd mixes. There were 56 dog breeds overall.

Humane Society President Donna Essig reminds everyone to spay/neuter their pet now to reduce the numbers of animals that will be brought to area shelters later this year. “Low income residents can call us to receive $10 spay/neuters for their pets provided by a grant from PetSmart Charities.”

For information on volunteering or for information on low cost spay/neuter, call the Humane Society at (540)489-3491.
