Our Featured Chow Chow...

YVES is a young, sweet, neutered, red rough coated Chow Chow. He was picked up as a stray in the Philadelphia area by animal control and surrendered to our rescue organization. Yves gets along great with other dogs, cats, and people. He is up to date with vaccinations, heartworm negative and on preventative (Interceptor 15th of the month), crate trained, house trained, and microchipped. Yves will be groomed prior to adoption. If you feel that you have the perfect home for Yves, please contact us via email and request an adoption application. Personal and vet references are required. A fenced yard is preferred.

Our Featured Chowmix...

ROCKY is a young yellow Labrador Retriever/Chow Chow mix. His former owners surrendered him to an animal control facility. That facility contacted us and requested that we rescue Rocky and find him a permanent, loving home. Rocky was given as a gift to the former owners. They kept him in a crate in their basement, until they finally surrendered him to the animal control facility. This boy has spent his puppyhood being neglected. Rocky is a very sweet, playful boy that adores attention. He has Labrador Retriever characteristics with regard to general appearance and behavior. Rocky is up to date with vaccinations (#2-050107), neutered, microchipped, heartworm negative and on preventative, crate trained and housetrained. Rocky will be groomed prior to adoption. He seems to enjoy other dogs. We do feel that Rocky will benefit from obedience training. He is intelligent and should learn instructions quickly. If you feel that you have the perfect home for Rocky, please contact us for an adoption application.

For Our Adoptors

Recycled

He sheds too much, & grown too big or too tall

This wasn't what you expected at all

He doesn't listen and he runs away

You just don't need this every day

He barks & howls when tied out on a chain

Locking him up in the bathroom was even in vain

Time to just drop him off at the local pound

With a lot of luck, a new home might be found

Where you saw only trouble, mischief and lies,

Someone else saw intelligence in those playful eyes

Several obedience classes & time outside of his cage

He can still learn just about anything at any age

He's just about perfect, completing someone's home & heart

He's been 'Recycled', thankfully, someone's done their part

Who We Are

Pendragwn Chow Chow Rescue is a volunteer, non-profit, breed specific rescue that works to find homes for unwanted Chow Chows. All of the Chow Chows cared for by our organization are kept in a home.

We do not have a stand alone kennel or animal facility. The Chow Chows reside in several foster homes. Therefore; our space available to foster Chow Chows is limited.

We also do not have set hours for visitation. An adoption application must be completed PRIOR to scheduling a time to visit the particular Chow Chow an adoptor may be interested in adopting. To obtain an adoption application, please contact us at
Email: PendragwnChowChowRescue@msn.com
The Chow Chows assisted by our rescue organization primarily come to us from animal control facilities.
If you feel that you must surrender your Chow Chow, please refer to this helpful link
Can't Keep Your Chow? on the Chow Welfare site Chow Welfare

Every Chow Chow or Chowmix that we place into a home is temperament tested, spayed or neutered, up to date with vaccinations, heartworm tested and treated if positive for heartworms or placed on heartworm preventative if negative or upon completion of heartworm treatment, tested for tick borne illnesses and treated if necessary and on a flea and tick preventative, all known medical issues are addressed and appropriately treated, house trained, crate trained, microchipped and basic obedience training begun. We recommend that every Chow Chow or Chowmix, regardless of age, attend an appropriately structured, Chow friendly obedience training course. This will build the relationship between the Chow Chow or Chowmix and the adoptive family.

Information about the Chow Chow Breed

Size:

The Chow is a medium-size dog generally weighing from forty-five to seventy pounds. The height ranges from seventeen to twenty inches at the withers. Although the Breed Standard does not give any suggested weight, an average-size Chow bitch would generally range from 45 to 55 pounds. An average-size Chow male would generally range from 55 to 70 pounds. No matter what the size or weight, the Chow should be balanced, in that the height of the Chow at the withers should form a square with the length of the Chow's body; for instance, if the Chow is eighteen inches high from the withers to the ground, he should be eighteen inches long in body.

Colors:

There are five colors in the Chow: red (light golden to deep mahogany), black, blue, cinnamon (light fawn to deep cinnamon) and cream. The predominant colors of the Chow are red -- or black. The reds may be light or dark, solid throughout or shaded on the tail and breechings.

Coat:

Rough, abundant, dense and coarse with a pronounced ruff around head and neck. Smooth, has a hard dense outer coat with a soft undercoat with no ruff or feathering on their legs and tail.

Care and Training:

The Chow needs to be brushed at least twice weekly or more if possible. Grooming is essential to keep the long, thick coat in peak, clean condition. Chows have a dense undercoat that supports the coarser outer coat and gives it its fluffy appearance. Many aduIt Chows have a ruff almost like that of a lion that must be handled with care because it can be stripped away by too much grooming. The puppy undercoat, however should be brushed out when it starts to loosen so that the adult coat may come in properly. Always brush out the dead coat and be careful that the remaining coat does not mat. Both a rake brush and a pin brush (both kinds are available at any pet show and even at most supermarkets) are needed to keep the coat in good, clean condition. The rake is useful in the removal of the fluffy undercoat and the pin brush to groom the longer, off-standing guard hairs which are of coarser quality. Nails should be trimmed regularly to a comfortable length.

Life Span:

12 - 15 Years

History:

The Chow Chow, often simply called the Chow, is one of the oldest breeds. His exact history is lost in the China of antiquity. Some historians record that the Tarters invaded China a thousand years before Christ and brought back to the West some middle-sized dogs that looked like "lions" with blue-black tongues. The Chow as it is known today is easily recognizable in pottery and sculptures of the Chinese Han Dynasty (206 B.C. to 22 A.D.); other artifacts indicate that he was even a much older breed and that he may have come originally from the Arctic Circle, migrating to Mongolia, Siberia and China. Some scholars claim that the Chow was the original ancestor of the Samoyed, the Norwegian Elkhound, the Pomeranian and the Keeshond. In more recent times, that is, in the T'ang Dynasty (7th Century A.D.), it is reported that one Chinese emperor kept something like 2,500 of these "Chow Dogs" as hunting and sporting animals to accompany his ten thousand hunters! Admired by emperors as well as by Western royalty, used by Chinese peasants for food and clothing,. and adopted as a "favorite" of the movie star set in Hollywood in the 1920's, the Chow Chow has had a dramatic history.
