Our Pet List

Shelter Hours

The Pet Adoption League in Yukon is going to be closed to the public starting October 1, 2008. We will still have our adoption trailer at Petsmart in Greensburg (in Hempfield Plaza next to Lowes) just about every weekend. We also go to Petco in Greensburg sometimes. Sometimes we have the adoption trailer and sometimes we just set up cages inside or outside Petsmart or Petco. Please email palyukon@yahoo.com or call the shelter at 724-722-3670 if you would like to meet a particular pet at one of these places on the weekend. Leave a message with your name and phone number, along with the pet you are interested in seeing. You can also email Robin at rstew679@yahoo.com if you'd like more information on any of our adoptable pets. Do not call Petsmart or Petco. The people there do not have up-to-date information on any of our pets. Also, we always have cats and kittens in our "Cat Condo" every day inside the Greensburg Petco (in the Walmart plaza) during their regular business hours.

Shelter Update!!

UPDATE 5-23-09...People thought it couldn't be done. Well, they were wrong. We have a brand new building, made completely of block and concrete, with beautiful windows and gorgeous tile and a perfect concrete floor. It looks fabulous. It's far from complete, but it is definitely looking up. Thanks to everyone who has been donating hours of service work to the shelter and helping to get the work done at a minimal expense. We have had to pay for some of the work, but the majority is done by Tom and volunteers. Pictures can be seen at our PALshelter Yahoo Group, if you use the link on this page to join. p.s. This would not be possible without the all the wonderful supporters of PAL. All this construction and the materials is really taking a toll on our bank account though. Please make a contribution below, to help us keep the funds flowing, and keep the work going. We are all looking forward to a Grand re-Opening very soon. There are many more dogs out there that we need to save. .

Cat & Kitten Foster Homes in Need of Supplies!

Most of our adoptable cats and kittens are in volunteer foster homes in the area. They are in need of the following supplies: Kitten milk replacer, flea treatment for cats, canned food (any brand), kitten and adult cat dry food (any brand). Please contact our cat coordinator, Kathy, to make arrangments for pick up at: navado@aol.com.

OUR FEATURED DOG- "PORTER"

Porter is a 4-year old Lab mix. Porter is down on his luck and REALLY desperate for a new home. He was here as a puppy 4 years ago, then got adopted out and returned after about 3 years, and then adopted out again and returned after a year, and now, it looks like he may just spend another year here at Pal. He looks like a quite stately "gentleman", doesn't he? He knows basic commands of sit, paw, down and stay. He is neutered and housetrained. Porter gets along fairly well with other dogs. He also gets along with older kids and cats. He's been through some obedience training, and would like to practice his skills with you. Won't you be a freind to Porter and welcome him into your home. Porter is a head-strong, dominant male, that needs a good strong arm to lead him. He can be a good boy, with the right guidance. He is very loving and affectionate with people once he forms that bond. If you want to meet Porter, call and leave a message and we will bring him with us on weekends to either Petsmart or Petco in Greensburg. You can email Robin at rstew679@yahoo.com.

OUR FEATURED FELINE - "SHAWNY"

**Shawny has a discounted adoption fee of $40 due to generous donor!
**I am sad to say I am still in foster care going on 6 months now. They are good to me here, but I really want my own, permanent home! I realize I'm not very photogenic, but I am cuter in person and lovable. Don't I deserve a chance? No one has even inquired about me. I am afraid of dogs so I don't want to have to go to the Petco condos because there are dogs that come in there, so i'm told. I would love a home for the holidays!! I would be an EXCELLENT companion, especially to a retired type of person... I am calm and just am grateful to be pet and fed. Please someone bring me home!
I am currently in foster care after being pulled from a kill shelter. I am a bit sad that my previous owner had to relinquish me and don't quite understand. Foster mom says my paper states I was surrendered due to my owner's health problems. The shelter was going to euthanize me due to age since my owner stated I was 12. I received good news when I found out I was being rescued and also when the vet estimated my age to be 7-8 years! What girl doesn't like to be told she's younger? I am a sweet girl, but a bit shy at first. After a day or so, I will learn your voice and come running for a snuggle when I hear you call me. I am a big girl, around 11 pounds. I am fully litter trained. I love people and like other cats. I am absolutely terrified of both the sight and sound of dogs. Please don't take me home if you have one. I must remain indoors due to my fear of dogs. I would really appreciate a home with a new owner to love. Please contact our cat coordinator, Kathy, at: navado@aol.com and take me to my forever home soon!

Sponsor-a-Pet Program:

“I wish I could take them all.” Do you feel that way as you browse our pet list on www.pal-yukon.Petfinder.com? You're not alone. It's the most common sentiment expressed by the thousands of visitors who that email petfinder.com. The good news is that most of them go on to find the pet of their dreams--that perfect companion--and to provide him or her a "forever home". But what about the pets left behind--those equally deserving companions who for some reason just weren’t a good lifestyle match? We've got good news for them, and you can help. Petfinder.com and the Petfinder.com Foundation are excited to offer a feature that allows you to sponsor a homeless pet that has touched your heart, but whom, for some reason, you can't adopt at this time. It costs an average of $180 to provide care for a pet while s/he waits for a home. You can help. You can start by clicking to sponsor a pet that melts your heart on Petfinder.com! Your contribution of just $10 will enable a pet to get cared for until a new loving family comes along. They all deserve this chance! Contributions are collected and distributed by the Petfinder.com Foundation and are tax deductible as the law allows. We are notified of the donations received and donor contact information (only if given permission by the donor), so we can monitor which pets are "sponsored" and acknowledge the donation as well. In the event that the pet is no longer available for adoption or receives numerous sponsorships, we may apply the donations to ongoing needs for the other pets currently in our care. Look for the Sponsor-a-Pet icon on the Pet Notes pages, on our Our Pet List.

UPCOMING EVENTS

We try to have our adoption trailer at Petsmart in Greensburg (in Hempfield Plaza next to Lowes) just about every Saturday. We may not be there every Saturday, depending on the weather conditions. But, we always have cats and kittens in our "Cat Condo" every day inside the Greensburg Petco (in the new Walmart plaza) during their regular business hours.

PAST EVENTS

Pet Adoption League Annual Auction! was held Saturday, November 8,2008. Items auctioned included antiques, collectibles, sports memorabilia, tickets, gift baskets, jewelry, art and new items. This fundraiser event was very successful. Our volunteers work very hard creating fund raisers, please support them.

Congratulations to the following dogs that got adopted during our Fall Adoptathon 2008 at Petsmart! Hershy the chocolate lab, Alphie the buff cocker spaniel, Minnie the little black terrier, Lacey the toy poodle, Sonny the puppy, Ebony the black lab, Zena the black lab, Ellie the aussie. What a fabulous feeling to watch these dogs walk out through the parking lot on their way to their new home and a new life! The thought of that image brings tears to my eyes. Sunshine, the lemon beagle and Prince, the little wirey terrier, are pending, but most-likely will go to their new homes on Wednesday. Thanks to all the volunteers who participated in the Fall Adoptathon: Francie, Shirley, Sue B., Amy, Pam, Roseanne, Mariah, Suzanne, Lisa, Gail, David, Jaimee, Phyllis. Thanks to Sue P. for getting us the Fall Newsletter just in time for the Adoptathon. Thanks also to Barb and Tom, for all the hard work they do. Especially Tom, because he is such a "trooper"! Barb, you have him trained well! :) .

Pet Adoption League participated in the fifth annual Pet Care Fair. Hearts and Paws Pet Ministry hosted the fifth annual Pet Care Fair on Saturday, June 21 from 9 am to 2 pm at Christ United Methodist Church, 44 Highland Road, Bethel Park, PA. There were over 50 pet rescue groups and vendors who attended this wonderful event. The public had the opportunity to meet a wide variety of animals, including dogs, cats, cuddly kittens, adorable puppies, guinea pigs, parrots, and rabbits who were looking for permanent homes. The vendors sold a variety of pet-related products, including arts & crafts, homemade pet treats, and services such as doggy day care and medical care.

The Pet Adoption League was present for "The Greater Tri-Town Historical Society Homecoming Weekend"---in Dawson, PA, on SATURDAY, JUNE 7
There were bands, including Girlz in Black Hats, a parade, craft and food vendors, Chinese auctions and Sat at 8:30 am a 3K and 10K run, a rubber duck race contest on the river and more. In attendence were Jake and Charlie, two of our Lab mix boys. Both Chuck and Jake were very well-behaved and enjoyed the day.

On Saturday, May 24, the volunteers of 'The Pet Adoption League' of Yukon presented an 'All-American Tribute to Our Best Friend, the Dog', an adoption event. They were at Tractor Supply at the Crossroads Plaza, Mt. Pleasant, Pa. On display were pictures of President's and soldiers with their dogs. The volunteers also brought along 7 of the residents from the Pet Adoption League in Yukon, and one of the 7 dogs visiting the event was matched up with a new home, and got to go home for the holiday. Our very own Freckles, the Coonhound, met her match, and is thanking her Lucky Stars for her new family. Thanks to all the people of Mount Pleasant and surrounding areas who came out to see us...and we hope to see you all again real soon!

May 2-4: Petsmart in Greensburg, PA
Adoptathon Days!
At the Petsmart Adoptathon 2008 we were able to adopt out THIRTEEN animals in need of homes! This was a huge success and hope to see you all there in the future.

"Help a Cat Have a Second Chance!"

We have had a lot of success this past year finding new homes for our cats and kittens through the Cat Condo at our local Petco in Greensburg. Over 20 cats and kittens have been adopted through there in just the past three months! However, there are others still waiting to go up to Petco that need a little time away from the shelter, so that they can be relaxed, vetted and ready when a spot comes open. We currently have every possible cat foster spot filled (with still more that we want to move out of the shelter environment). We would greatly appreciate it even if we could find temporary foster space for even one cat per home. If you would like more information on our cat foster program, please email Kathy Shaw-Midgley at: NAVADO@aol.com and she will let you know how easy it is to help a cat find a forever family.

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS!

Subscribe to PALVolunteer

Powered by us.groups.yahoo.com

Every little bit adds up when we can get many to lighten our burden. Our shelter is desparately seeking volunteers to help clean the shelter, and care for and spend time with the animals, even on rotating shifts. Once we can get more volunteers to help out with this, then we will be able to open for more public hours. Any time you can offer is appreciated. Please call and leave a message at the shelter if you can help. Or contact Robin at email address cstew679@comcast.net We are also looking for a few dependable volunteers to help take care of our cats up at Petco in Greensburg. We are ALWAYS in need of volunteers!
WE ALSO NEED FOSTER HOMES. If you would like to help the shelter but afraid you don't have the time, effort, or finances perhaps you could volunteer to be a temporary foster parent. We are in serious need for foster homes for several dogs that need to spend quality time in a loving home for some extra socialization. This is a great way to help the shelter, help the furry friends, and spend the summer months. Homes without small children would probably be best for many of the dogs. Please email or call the shelter for more information or to foster a pal.
There are many ways that you can volunteer to help our furry friends here at PAL. We always need people to help us when we take our pets to the Greensburg Petsmart on the weekends. We also need dog walkers and cat cuddlers here at the shelter. Foster homes are needed as well. People with fundraising ideas and those with handyman skills are always welcome too.

You can also help our Shelter raise money every time you search on the internet- it costs nothing for you and raises money for us! Click on the button below to find out how.

SENIOR MATCHES MADE IN HEAVEN

In order to promote the adoption of some of our older dogs and cats here at the Pet Adoption League, we have initiated the following program:

----Dogs and cats older than age 8 years can be adopted to Senior Citizens (over age 65) at a discounted fee.

Senior pets for senior people makes a great match!
Senior pets are usually more settled and calm.
Senior pets are often already housetrained.
Senior pets give older people the opportunity to get out and exercise.
Senior pets can reduce some of the stress associated with ageing, living alone, dealing with illness, loss of a loved one, depression, etc.
Every senior pet adopted is spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped for identification.
NOTE TO ADOPTERS PARTICIPATING IN THIS PROGRAM
PAL also provides ongoing support to seniors who may have difficulty getting supplies, food, and/or vet care for their new pet.
If you know a senior citizen who needs a buddy, please call The Pet Adoption League 724-722-3670

ADOPTING AN OLDER DOG MAKES SENSE FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS.

Contrary to the popular myth, bringing home a new puppy at seven weeks is not the only way to bring the joy of a new dog into your life. Adopting an older dog offers a number of benefits. First and foremost, older dogs are usually already housetrained and won't chew up your shoes or furniture. Older dogs are better able to focus and understand the meaning of the word "no." Additionally, an older dog will form a near instant bond with you, will sleep through the night (so you can), and will make one of the most loyal companions you could ever hope for. And unlike puppies, an older dog's size and personality traits will have already been developed. So what you see is what you get. With millions of dogs facing euthanasia every year because of abandonment and overbreeding, adopting an older dog is one of the most humane and rewarding steps you could ever take.

"There is no one on earth more deserving of help than a good old dog who has given its heart and soul to its family and then lost its home."- Annie Simon

Who We Are

The Pet Adoption League is a no-kill non-profit animal shelter founded in 1991 to aid unwanted, neglected, and/or abandoned pets in Westmoreland and Fayette counties. Until new homes can be found PAL provides shelter, food, and veterinary care (including spaying and neutering) to more than 500 needy animals yearly, with No Time Limit on their length of stay at our shelter. Despite our small operating budget we manage to care for and to place hundreds of animals year after year.
Education about responsible pet guardianship is also a big part of our work. Special emphasis is given to the importance of spaying and neutering, and to the cruelty of chaining dogs to dog houses. We promote pets as valued family members, worthy of life-long protection and love, not merely as animals that people "own". Our goal is to provide the kind of care that turns a frightened, hungry, deserted, or unwanted dog or cat into someone's cherished friend for life.
The Pet Adoption League receives no government funding of any kind. We rely totally on the kind donations of people like you to keep our doors open. If you would like to send a donation, please mail it to:
THE PET ADOPTION LEAGUE
150 Spring Street
YUKON, PA. 15698
email: PALYukon@yahoo.com
NOTE: If you email us for an application, we will send you one via email, but you will have to print it out, complete the application, and then mail it back to us. This will help us to reduce our costs in ink and paper printing out so many applications.

Our Wish List

We can also use supplies such as printer paper, tablets, colored markers, 3-tab manila file folders, or any other office supplies as well as postage stamps. Gift cards for pet supplies and office supplies also make great donations.
UPDATED LIST (12-9-08)
Donations of all kinds are truly appreciated. But here is what is needed most right now: Dog and cat food, any kind, except generic. Cat litter. We are always in need of Odo-ban, and trash bags…big leaf bags and tall kitchen size. Dawn original dish liquid, anti-bacterial hand wash, Liquid Laundry Detergent, and paper towels. We could use doggie deodorant spray, and waterless shampoo for dogs and cats. We also need dog collars (preferably metal buckles, not plastic)....size medium. Currently we have two sizes of collars....too big and too small! We would also like to have Kongs and other tough toys to keep the dogs busy, along with Peanut butter and small dog biscuits, or cheese wiz to stuff into the Kongs. Thank you so much!!!

Adopting a friend

You can see our pets at the shelter or when we go to the Greensburg PETsMART on Route 30. We go two or three times monthly. Please call the shelter to find out when we will be going there next.
Our adoption donation for dogs and cats INCLUDES microchip, shots, worming, and the spay or neuter of the pet. We also have a Health Check Requirement for the first 10 days after adoption. The adopter must get the new pet seen by their vet within 10 days of the adoption date. If the pet is sick you have the option of returning the pet to us for treatment by our vet, getting it treated by your vet (at your expense), or returning the pet for a full refund or another pet.

NOTE: If you email us for an application, we will send you one via email, but you will have to print it out, complete the application, and then mail it back to us. This will help us to reduce our costs in ink and paper printing out so many applications.

CAT ADOPTION PROCEDURE

The adoption fee for Cats and kittens start at $75. *We also will not adopt to those who plan to declaw their adopted cat. We have cats in foster care almost all the time that are already declawed and will help to find them homes, but we do not recommend or allow declawing on our adopted cats.
All cats 5 months of age or older are spayed/neutered prior to adoption. If the pet is under 5 months, the adoption donation covers the cost of the surgery when old enough. You must contact the cat coordinator to schedule the surgery with our approved vet. Or, you may choose to have your vet do the surgery also at your cost.

SHELTER ADOPTION PROCEDURE

We try our best to match each and every pet with the most appropriate home, both for the pet and for the potential adoptive family. For this reason, YOU MUST VISIT with the pet and will be asked to fill out our Adoption Application. This Application will be forwarded to the Review Committee. If approved you must sign our Adoption Contract before getting your new pet.
PLEASE NOTE -- WE DO NOT SHIP PETS -- NOR DO WE TRANSPORT PETS. YOU WILL NEED TO MEET THE PET PRIOR TO ADOPTION TO SEE IF THIS PET IS WELCOME IN YOUR HOME!!!!
Out-of-state people and those more than 100 miles from us can email PALYukon@yahoo.com for an adoption application. NOTE: If you email us for an application, we will send you one via email, but you will have to print it out, complete the application, and then mail it back to us. This will help us to reduce our costs in ink and paper printing out so many applications.
We may be able to give preliminary approval of an application when we receive it, but the final decision cannot be made until you have come to the shelter and met the pet. Also, out of state and other long distance applications may take extra time, and we may also require a home visit by an agent representing us in your area.
