Adopting A Friend

We want you to find the perfect pet for your family, and become their forever home!   To make sure the adoption is a good match, our procedure is:

1.    All family members must come & meet the pet to be adopted.

2.    The new family signs a pre-adoption questionnaire & agreement.

3.    There is a three-day waiting period while we review/verify the adoption agreement, references.

4.    The pet is prepared for his/her new home: spayed or neutered (if not done already);  updated on vaccinations including an "8-Way distemper shot, rabies and bordetella;  Advantage flea prevention, Avid (micro-chipped).

DOGS are heartworm tested & stool checked, and wormed if needed.

CATS have a four-way vaccination, and if over 12 weeks rabies vaccinated, stool checked & wormed if needed, leukemia & combo tested. 

To help defray these costs, there is an adoption fee for the adopted pets at our shelter.  

ALL ANIMALS WILL BE ALTERED BEFORE LEAVING THE SHELTER.

We are a no-kill animal shelter committed to serving Armstrong County, established in 1969 to provide temporary shelter for unwanted and abused animals while matching lovable animals with loving forever homes educating the public on humane responsible care of all animals reducing animal overpopulation.

WISH LIST: CLAY CAT LITTER, NON-CLUMPING!!!  Dry Purina Dog Chow (green bag), Purina Puppy Chow (tri-colored food), dry Purina Cat Chow, dry Purina Kitten Chow; canned dog food, dry Purina One Dog Food, dry Iams Dog Food, dry Iams Cat Food (orange bag original), non-colored dog chews, chew toys, Kong toys (all sizes), adjustable dog collars and leashes, dog/cat shampoo (not flea & tick), towels, grooming supplies, paper towels, dish liquid, stamps, 9 x 12 clasp envelopes, newspapers, heavy brooms, mop heads (blue or white from Sams’ Club) commercial weight garbage bags (leaf & tall kitchen), unscented bleach.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO:
Walk, groom and spend time with the shelter's dogs
Spend time with the cats
Volunteer with our Pittsburgh Mills Mall cats & kittens
Foster home dogs & puppies, cats & kittens
Videotape (smart phone?) our animals to add to pets’ Petfinder descriptions
Offsite events (fund raisers, pet adoption days)
General maintenance
Follow up calls for adopted animals
Prepare newspapers for cage use (may be done offsite)
Donate aluminum cans

OUR HOURS:
Monday thru Friday: 1 - 5, Adoption hours 1 - 4:30 p.m.
Saturday:  Noon - 3, Adoption hours noon - 2:30 p.m.
Sundays, Holidays Closed

PLEASE call and check on our hours if in doubt before you come to see a pet! Also please come to see pets at least 1/2 hour before closing to have time to spend with a pet if interested in adopting,if not you maybe asked to come back the next business day to meet the pet and do your pre-adoption forms.

LOCATION:  Orphans of the Storm is located on Rt. 85 about three miles east of Kittanning.

FROM THE SOUTH AND WEST: Follow Routes 28/66/422. Remain on 28/66 to end of bypass (remain in RIGHT lane). At traffic signal, turn right onto Rt. 85. Orphans of the Storm is about 1/4 mile on the left hand side.

FROM THE EAST: Follow Rt. 422 to the intersection with Rts.28/66 north (New Bethlehem and Clarion). Take Rts.28/66 north. Stay in RIGHT lane at traffic signal. Turn right onto Rt. 85 (about one mile to first traffic signal); turn right onto Rt. 85. We are about 1/4 mile on the left side.

FROM THE NORTH: Take Rt. 28/66 to intersection with Rt. 85 (traffic signal). Turn left onto Rt. 85; we are about 1/4 mile on left.
