PETS IN NEED OF RESCUE: These highly adoptable dogs are awaiting a commitment from stable, loving homes so that they can be transported to our rescue and into safety. Please contact rvtv1@msn.com if you can help by fostering or adopting.

SAMMY'S FUND: Thisyoung guy is Sammy and he needs your help. Sammy rear leg was broken and healed wrong. He now needs surgery to repair the leg so that he can live a normal life without fear of re-injuring his leg. We are accepting donations for Sammy's surgery and need to ask for your help. Please send donations to Prairie Animal Hospital, 2770 Praire Avenue, Beloit, WI 53511. Please note that the donation is for Sammy. You can also use your credit or debit card and call (608) 365-7400. Any amount you can donate to help this precious young man is appreciated. Thanks to the recent article in the Beloit Daily News and the tireless efforts of Sammy's foster family, we are quickly closing in on collecting the $3,000 needed for his surgery. We are also seeking donations for Sadie, a rare Bernese Mountain Dog/Golden Retriever mix who was recently diagnosed with hip dysplasia and we need to collect enough donations to cover the $800 surgical costs to make this beautiful, gentle girl healthy. We are a rescue that will take in handicapped or injured animals to insure their chances of being adopted into safe and loving homes. We will announce our upcoming fundraisers at Petco and Preferred Pets. All funds that go into Sammy's Fund that are not used will be held by Prairie Animal Hospital for future medical care of sick and injured pets. Please help us to help the neediest of our pets.

Meet Maxwell, the beloved dog that belonged to one of our brave soldiers who was forced to surrender him when he returned to active duty in Iraq. This wonderful boy needs a good home where he can be safe and loved forever. We would also love to find a home where they could stay in contact with Maxwell's former dad and make sure he is assured that his baby is cared for as he should be. It broke the hearts of even the most seasoned animal control officers when this brave soldier left his companion in a place where his safety wasn't guaranteed. Please contact us as soon as possible so that we can arrange to have Maxwell transported here to safety in either a foster or forever home. This dog qualifies for our Pets for Vets program.

MILITARY VETERANS:

We are a foster home based rescue group with a focus on saving highly-adoptable animals while providing guidance, good nutrition , medical care, training, and love. We also give preference for adoption to our military veterans of any current or former conflict. The love of a pet has helped heal many aching hearts when our soldiers return home and we are proud to offer our pets to our veterans. Please contact rvtv1@msn.com for more information on the puppies that are a part of this program and how you can qualify for reduced adoption fees.

Pets2Vets: A Great Program to Assist Veterans and Homeless Pets.

We are currently creating a room for cats where our foster and permanent cats have a special place to play, sleep and socialize with each other away from our other foster pets. We need donations of cat toys, beds, furniture, crates, scratching posts and anything else that will keep our special feline friends busy and happy. If you would like to donate any items, please call Tammi at (608) 718-3813 to arrange a pickup of your items. Thank you!!!!

WE ARE IN URGENT NEED OF FOSTER HOMES!!!

We are in urgent need of foster homes to save some wonderful dogs that are in high-kill shelters whose time is running out. Please look into the faces below and consider helping us out by fostering just one dog. These precious souls are in shelters with limited budgets and high euthanasia rates, and are scheduled to die in the next couple of days!!! You will save his/her life and bring joy into your own life.

We are a no-kill rescue group, consisting of foster homes only. We are not a shelter and you cannot bring animals to us to "drop off". We support a no-kill policy and are asking for sweeping changes in the way that shelters and rescues are run. Simply look to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah and you can see for yourself that progressive programs that focus on quality of life for pets do work. Also check out the link above to the No Kill Advocacy Center. We hold fast to the belief that using resources to provide good socialization, a focus on exercise, good nutrition and medical care will make a happy, healthy pet. If you need help, call us as we have many resources to assist you in times of need. We know of groups who can get you low cost spay/neuter services, food and even reduced vet care, but we cannot take your pet into our rescue like a shelter does. We also offer a rehoming project where we can list your animal and hopefully get it placed, however your pet must be able to pass a series of temperament tests to ensure that there are no behavioral problems that you are trying to push off on innocent people. But if you simply want to get rid of your pet, consider that very few animals make it out of shelters alive and dropping them off there will most likely result in their death.

** UPDATE: 7/21/09 Once in a lifetime you meet a dog that touches you so deep in your soul that you don't ever want them to leave your life. Jessi is that dog for me. She was a "red line" dog with 10 puppies...within hours of being euthanized when our rescue committed to taking them in. The minute I laid eyes on this little momma I fell in love with her and she loved me back. Here was a dog that had been abused, locked in a cage to care for 10 precious puppies and instead of becoming mean, she grew even more sweet and loving. Caring for 10 pups brought on pneumonia and she struggled through that and made it. I simply fell in love with her, but knew that she had to find a good home where she would be loved and cared for for the remainder of her precious life. In stepped an angel named Sara Glasnovich who heard her story and prayed on what to do. Her decision was to take in my precious girl and she drove to Wisconsin and adopted her. Jessi now lives in a home where she is so loved and so happy. I truly believe that God holds a special place in heaven for people like Sara and her love for this dog will change her as it did me. Thank you Sara. Thank you so very much. Tammi

To all those I tried to save. To all those I want to save. You are loved and we will keep trying.

We are working with some out-of-state shelters in transporting dogs to Wisconsin for adoption who are facing imminent death due to a lack of space. Many of these animal are euthanized by "gassing" and are held for as little as three days before they are put down. For more information on this inhumane method of euthanasia, please see the video below and you will find out just how horrifying and painful a death this is for our beloved companion pets. It is a GRAPHIC and BARBARIC video to watch, but you need to know that this form of death is still in use all over the country and that is why we are working so hard to get pets out of these shelters.

**Warning: Graphic and Disturbing Video That Shows Actual Euthanasia...Please Do Not Watch Around Children**

SPECIAL RE-HOMING PROGRAM

We are now offering a "Re-Homing and Adoption Contract" program that allows you the opportunity to participate in the adoption process for your pet. Because of the lack of space in many shelters and the low number of foster homes currently available, it is very hard to find ways to place your pet if you are forced to surrender them for reasons such as moving to a home where pets aren't allowed, difficult work schedules, allergies, or finding a stray that hasn't been claimed. One of the most difficult issues we can face is giving up our beloved pets and ensuring that they aren't euthanized or placed in the wrong home. Once you give up ownership of a pet to a shelter, your rights to any information is also terminated. The program is simple: Once we temperament test your pet and they pass our standards, we provide advertising, listing on websites such as Petfinder, and screening of potential adoptive homes including background checks, veterinary and personal reference checks, and home visits. Once we have narrowed the field to a few qualified homes, we will sit down with you and decide who would provide the best home for your pet. It is a wonderful program for everyone involved and helps make the transition for you and your pets much, much easier. To discuss this unique program, please call (608) 718-3813 or e-mail rvtv1@msn.com for further information.

DONATIONS

We are currently working to complete our paperwork for non-profit status and are accepting donations to cover our costs which include transporting, food, veterinary care, crates, treats, training fees, office supplies, advertising, and all the other expenses that crop up in caring for our foster pets. Without your help, we would be unable to continue our operations. Our greatest expenses are related to pet healthcare, so if you would like to make a donation to assist with our veterinary costs please note on your checks "Vet Care" and we will direct the money to our account with our vet clinic.

WHO WE ARE

We, the volunteers and administrators of One At A Time Pet Rescue, believe that every single person can make a difference in the life of a pet and each one of us, if willing to help in one capacity or another, can make a huge difference in decreasing the number of homeless pets. One At A Time, we can be the catalyst for change and together transform the outlook for millions of pets. Our philosophy is that our pets are family members and as family members, we must fight to protect them, assist in improving their manners through proper training, and educate our friends and neighbors on ways to better the lives of their pets.

Another goal of our group is to fight stereotypes for certain breeds of dogs and advocate to halt discrimination that results in Breed Specific Legislation (BSL). Many communities are opting to ban breeds such as pit bull terriers, rottweillers, German shepherds, and other dogs deemed “vicious”. By educating and carefully selecting the proper homes for these breeds, we hope to teach the public the specific needs of each breed. A happy, healthy pet who’s needs are being met both physically and psychologically is a strong argument for stopping BSL and the resulting genocide that occurs when communities opt to ban a breed that results in mass euthanasia. This frightening trend has occurred in communities such as Denver, Colorado and Miami, Florida, and thousands of owners of these breeds have faced the horror of losing their beloved pets when they are seized and killed. This type of legislation punishes those who are responsible pet owners and still does not address the problems associated with people who exploit and abuse these breeds for financial gain. The lists of banned dogs will continue to grow because the people willing to exploit these animals for financial gain will just go out and find a bigger, stronger breed such as Dogo Argentino or Tosa to fight and breed. Rescue groups all over the country receive desperate calls for assistance in getting dogs out of areas with BSL to prevent the deaths of beloved family pets. Bumper stickers in these areas proclaim, “Ban the deed, not the breed” and we strongly believe that focusing resources on education, low-cost spaying/neutering and upping the penalties for crimes against animals will assist in stopping this madness.

PETS FOR SENIORS PROGRAM

Pets can make an amazing difference in our lives and greatly improve our health and we would like to make pet ownership an option for all people, even those with limited income. We know of a gentleman who was diagnosed with severe congestive heart failure in 1979 at the age of 41 and was told he had 3-5 years to live. He always kept dogs and cats and lived to be 69 years old. I am totally convinced that he survived and survived in pretty good health due to his love of animals and the benefits they provided him. He was my father and the love and devotion his pets gave him improved the quality of his life and for that I will be eternally grateful. If you are in good health, over the age of 55 and can show that you can handle the financial responsibilities of a pet , please call (608) 718-3813
