Who We Are
Oakdale Animal Shelter is a division of the City of Oakdale Police Department in Oakdale, California. We enforce all laws relating to animals within the city limits of Oakdale. We make every attempt to return a lost animal to his/her home. Give us a call if you have lost a pet. We maintain a list of lost pets and can check it if an animal comes to the shelter. Adopting a friend
Consider your new companion carefully. The average dog or cat has a life expectancy of up to 15 years or more. Bringing a pet into your home is a longtime committment. Many animals do not appear at their best due to the stress of living in the shelter, but will become fine companions with a little TLC. They may need some grooming and a period of adjustment before becoming the best friend you are looking for.
Be prepared to help your new family member learn your house rules and become secure with housebreaking. Caution: Puppies while cute and adorable, may grow into larger-than-expected, energetic pets that become unruly or destructive if not given the proper training and attention. You might consider an adult who is already past the "chewing the slippers" stage. Plan on investing some time to give your new pet the care and attention they need to become good canine/feline citizens. For helpful videos click here.
All pets must be spayed or neutered before going to their new home. Dog adoption cost is $95.00 for male dogs, and $125.00 for female dogs. Adoption cost includes cost of spay/neuter and rabies vaccination. Cat adoption cost is $55.00 for male cats, and $65.00 for female cats. Adoption cost includes cost of spay/neuter, testing for Leukemia/FIV, and first FRCP vaccination.
SPECIAL BREED INFORMATION
A NOTE ABOUT ADOPTING PIT BULL TERRIERS, AMERICAN STAFFORDSHIRE TERRIERS AND OTHER MASTIFF BREEDS---If you admire the Pit Bull/Am Staf breed, please consider the adoption of an adult dog rather than buying a puppy. If a dog is going to show aggressive tendencies, this often does not show up until the dog reaches maturity at 1 to 1 1/2 years old. It is almost impossible to test for this as a puppy. But, an adult dog ,even if his or her background is unknown, can be temperament tested for dog to dog and other types of aggression. The mastiff breeds can be wonderful loyal family dogs. The sad fact is that municipal shelters are overrun with unclaimed strays of this breed who were bought as cute cuddly puppies and have grown into much more dog than the family expected. The euthanasia rate for these breeds in most municipal shelters is extremely high.
