Feature Felines

Josie

Meet Josie. Josie is a little imp of a cat. She came to us in July of 2007, when she was just under a year old. A Good Samaritan found this little stray, took her to a local vet where she tested positive for FIV and was spayed. Josie is extremely sweet with people and loves to be petted and brushed. Like many cats, she is only willing to be held for brief periods of time, but will lie contentedly with you for ages if you are sitting down. She was briefly in foster care and then came to the shelter.

Since arriving at the shelter she has been in a room with a variety of cats and has done well with them. Dogs did not bother her at first in her foster home, but she began hiding from them before coming to the shelter. Miss Josie is young, very playful and frisky when she has the opportunity to run free, and needs a lot of people-time and things to play with. We think Josie could be equally happy as a single cat or with another cat with an easy going personality.

Josie is FIV+ but with good care she can live a normal life. Josie will have to be an indoor cat and she will need prompt medical attention for any indication of illness, no matter how small – sneezing/coughing, runny nose, etc. If she receives that level of care, she will reward you by being an absolutely wonderful companion for the rest of her days. If you are interested in Josie, please talk to our shelter staff or read the articles we have taken from the web about FIV+ cats.

If you are interested, please come and meet Josie at the shelter. We'll keep our eyes open for you! Please come to the shelter to meet this darling little girl during adoption hours – Sunday 1-4PM, as well as Wed. and Thurs. evenings from 6:30-8PM.

Dutchess

Meet Torie . Our girl Torie came to the shelter in August of 1998 when she was about a year old. She had apparently been living on the streets all her life and had not had good experiences with humans, so she didn't trust us at first. Our wonderful shelter staff and volunteers were very kind and exceptionally patient with this frightened little kitty. They spent many hours with her – petting her, talking quietly with her, and being ever so gentle. And over time she became a very friendly kitty. She loves attention and being petted. One of our volunteers wanted everyone to know that she is a TERR-R-RIFIC purrer and will some times start her motor just at the sight of a nearby friendly human. Torie enjoys other cats too, so she would prefer to have other animal companions in her new home.

Torie is a quiet, undemanding girl and has continually been overlooked at the shelter. Though she isn't a frisky young thing anymore, (and that may be a good thing!) she still has more than enough time to become your best friend and the love of your life. She will be more than happy to snuggle up ... maybe have a little "girl talk" or maybe she'll just whisper sweet nothings in your ear. We have it on the best authority that she can be very close-mouthed, so you can tell her all your secrets and she won’t tell another soul!

If you have a gentle home with a friendly cat or two for her to hang out with, please come and meet Torie at the shelter. We'll keep our eyes open for you! Please come to the shelter to meet this darling little girl during adoption hours – Sunday 1-4PM, as well as Wed. and Thurs. evenings from 6:30-8PM.

Adoption Steps

  1. Visit the shelter during adoption hours. Adoption hours are SUN 1-4 PM, WED 6:30-8 PM and THU 6:30-8 PM. We ask that everyone in the adopting household be present. Adopting an animal is a family decision. Fill out an Adoption Application at the shelter or download one here. If you are coming from a distance and would like us to preview your application prior to coming to the shelter, please fill out our application and email it back to mwhspaw@yahoo.com. Please note that final approval of an application is done at the shelter with an adoption counselor If we feel we have a cat that may be a match, we will show you these cats. We reserve the right to reject an application for any reason, please keep in mind that we must always do what we feel is in the best interest of the cat. If you and MWHS feel that a possible match has been made, we ask that you spend some time visiting with the cat. The decision to adopt should not be made lightly as the cat will be with you for many years to come. We encourage you to come back and visit again if you have the slightest bit of uncertainty. It is stressful for an animal to go to a new home only to be returned to the shelter. Review all paperwork regarding care of cat being adopted with an adoption counselor. Take cat home in an approved cat carrier.
  2. Transition the cat to his new home, following the directions of your adoption counselor.

Please note that some of the cats at our shelter are...

The Forgotten Cats: Some of the MWHS shelter cats are semi-feral. These cats are born outside and are very shy initially, but with lots of TLC, a semi-feral cat can turn into a loyal, devoted pet. MWHS brings these cats to the shelter to socialize them so they may eventually be adopted.

Semi-feral cats at the shelter have been socialized to varying degrees. Some will lick food treats from your finger, and others will let you pet them. And then those you cannot touch because they have not yet learned to trust.

They are non-aggressive, just frightened. Semi-feral cats generally love the company of other cats, and therefore make great companion animals. Please keep in mind that semi-feral cats do not make good pets for households with young children as they are easily scared.

Please come visit the MWHS shelter during adoption hours to learn about these "forgotten" cats.

FIV+ Cats: Give Them a Chance Cats with this condition can live perfectly long, happy, healthy lives. Learn More
MWHS also houses many cats that were once pets, please come visit us to find out what the MWHS shelter is all about!
