We are a county-run animal control facility. Our capacity is 50 dogs and 36 cats. We are not allowed to go above that and need to keep a few kennels open for emergencies.
Rescue inquiries and local foster home inquiries are very welcome!

Adoption hours 1-5 pm? Local residents, currently the shelter's adoption hours are 1pm to 5pm Monday through Friday. If you would like to see night or weekend hours, please contact your county commissioners and ask them to open the shelter evenings and weekends for adoptions.

We need local VOLUNTEERS! If you would like to volunteer in ANY way, please contact us. We need local and virtual (long distance) help!

We are a high intake county shelter and need rescue help! We are NOT a no-kill shelter. Our county commission limits us to 50 dogs and 36 cats max! Without LOTS of rescue help and adoptions, it will be IMPOSSIBLE for us to maintain the population at this level without euthanizing.

Surrendering an animal: Please visit the shelter during operating hours and speak to Betty, the shelter director, to surrender an animal. There is no fee to surrender. Please DO NOT leave animals unattended outside after business hours. We've had animals get lost, killed by vehicles, or hang themselves on leashes that were tied to the fence. PLEASE bring your animals in during our business hours. Residents, if you need to surrender an animal, we also STRONGLY SUGGEST that you reach out to rescues and no-kill shelters via Petfinder for assistance in rehoming your pet. Rescues typically keep animals in foster homes rather than a shelter environment. This is a healthier environment and much less stressful for your pet than going into a crowded, noisy shelter.

Spay/neuter is one of the most important things you can do for the health of your pet and to cut down on the dog/cat overpopulation problem. WV law MANDATES that all dogs/cats adopted from a shelter MUST be spayed/neutered! Scroll down for information on low-cost spay/neuter for WV residents.

WV residents, low-cost spay/neuter is available! Please spay or neuter your pet to cut down on the overpopulation problem in our county. Long Distance Adoptions

If you do not live close to our shelter but would like to adopt a dog or cat from us, please e-mail us and we will try to put you in contact with a rescue near you. We deal with quite a few rescues in the northeast. Please put "Adoption inquiry from (your city/state)" in the subject line. You can apply to adopt through the rescue, and they will handle your application and screening process. The rescue can then make all of the arrangements with the shelter for you.

Local Adoptions

Please visit the shelter at 1965 Fairground Road in Point Pleasant, WV. We are located off Route 62, three miles north of the last signal light (by Speedway) in Point Pleasant. You will see a sign for the Mason County Fairgrounds on the right signifying Fairground Road. Go down that road and we are approximately 1 mile out on the left. Bring a vet reference with you. Per WV law, all animals adopted from WV shelters must be spay/neutered . You must fill out an application, be approved by the shelter director, and then wait for the animal to be vetted before you can take it home.
