Due to the holiday and forecast for a great weather weekend many of our fosters and volunteers will not be available to attend the show so we will not be having our Moochie & Co event this weekend. We apologize but hope to see you at our next show in Westland at our Petco event on the 19th and also our Sterling Heights Petco event on the 26th! We will be back at Moochies on August 2, 2008! PLEASE HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY 4TH FROM ALL OF US AT LAST DAY DOG RESCUE!
WE URGENTLY NEED FOSTER HOMES!
Summer is finally here.... What a special time to add a new member to your family! Swimming, walking, camping and social gatherings are things a family pet would enjoy as much as you do! If you can't adopt, please consider being a foster for a dog in need of a family and home environment. We are looking for people with big hearts filled with love and concern for dogs as much as our hearts are. We need you! Our dogs need you! Won't you please consider fostering a dog who would be so grateful to be near you to share the pleasures of Summer?
Shelters and pounds are facing an overflow of dogs needing our help! We can't help them without you. Due to hard economic times, dogs are being surrendered and abandoned in record numbers. Dogs are being left behind in homes where families have just left them to fend for themselves. Due to this, we are seeing more sick and injured dogs who deserve a chance to find the joy and comfort of a family who will love them.
We are dedicated to continue rescuing our friends from these shelters all year round. Without you providing foster homes, the dogs will die in even bigger numbers. We are seeking qualified foster homes for these precious dogs who depend on us all! If you can possibly open your home and heart to our very deserving friends, please contact us immediately! Discover what a wonderful thing you can do for dogs in need who are facing their last day! Please see our foster section below to email us for an application!
PLEASE REMEMBER dogs are usually very afraid of fireworks...please be sure your dog is safe inside when they are going off in your area. Every year at this time, the shelters and pounds find many family pets are showing up at their facilities as a dog may escape or even jump a fence due to confusion and trying to get away from the noise. Dogs may also jump out open windows. Don't let this happen to your pet, keep them safe!
PLEASE SPONSOR-A-PET!
Maybe you can't foster or adopt but would like to help out in some way. You can now help us help our dogs by donating thru Sponsor A Pet. Our adoption fees don't nearly cover our costs for the dogs we rescue with the vetting, food and care we provide them until they are adopted. It's very easy to do, just browse our Petfinder pages and if you see a dog you would like to help, just click the button and follow the prompts! Your donations, big or small, are tax deductible and will go along way in aiding our efforts to save more dogs on their last day! Thank you!
PLEASE THINK ABOUT ADOPTING AN OLDER FRIEND!
Please consider making an older dog a part of your family! Please check out our Last Day older friends on our Petfinder pages!
Adopting an older dog is such a special thing to do. Like any puppy, they too deserve to have a forever family where they can spend the rest of their years knowing they are loved and to have someone they can love, as they are past the puppy ways of chewing, pottying in the house and are just happy and content to be your loyal companion, to be by your side and have comfort in their lives. Won't you think about them?

Last Day Dog Rescue does not have a physical location. All our dogs are placed in foster homes until they are adopted. Last Day Dog Rescue is a volunteer based group. We all have full time jobs and family commitments that we try and schedule in with our rescue work, so most of our work is done during our lunch hours, at night, or on the weekends. We do promise to get back to you as soon as possible.
Our group focuses on rescuing dogs from the 'Urgent' lists in shelters and pounds across lower Michigan and parts of Ohio with an emphasis on those shelters who euthanize by gas in which these dogs die a most horrific agonizing and slow death, and those shelters who sell the dogs in their care to research labs where they are used for barbaric and most times painful testing and experimentation.
We hold a special place in our hearts for the big and black dogs, even ‘ugly’ dogs (who we don't find ugly at all!) and the special senior dogs. These dogs most often get overlooked and passed up in shelters and pounds everywhere for puppies, small breeds and the ‘prettier’, lighter colored dogs.
Dogs found in shelters are there for many reasons: owner surrenders, strays, cruelty/abuse cases and dogs found abandoned, left to fend for themselves in vacant homes, fields, ditches and even being tied out in the woods left to starve. Last Day Dog Rescue does not discriminate and feels that each of these dogs, no matter their size, age, color or the reason they are there, deserve a second chance at life...we help all those we can.

OurLastDayDogs@Gmail.com
to request an Adoption Application!
One will be sent to you as soon as possible. Please complete it and return to us via email. We will do our best to answer any questions you may have.
**FILL OUT THE APPLICATION**
You must fill out an application to be considered for an adoption. This process serves to help us do our very best to place these once sheltered dogs in the proper forever home so they don’t find themselves in that situation again. We can also better understand your living situation and lifestyle which is a first step in finding our friends and you the best match possible. Unless our dogs are in a public facility, an application is required before a meeting can be scheduled. We do not conduct on site adoptions at our adoption events although you can fill out an application at a show. A rare exception may be made if the application is satisfactory and references, vet check and home visit can be done same day, it may be possible to complete an adoption at that time.
**VET CHECK AND HOME VISIT**
Once an application has been received, it is carefully reviewed by our Board members. A vet check is done if that information is available. If no vet info is given, we review these on a case by case basis and consider all other factors. If approved, the foster will contact you to arrange a meeting and home visit with you. The visit is done to ensure us that the information you have provided us is accurate and helps us to see how the family and pets in the household interact and how they are treated. Our fosters also know their dog best and can help determine if this is the right home for that dog. We are looking to place our friends in their forever home, so each step is important in the process with that goal in mind.
**CONTRACT AND FEES**
Once we are as sure as we can be that our friend has found it’s forever home, the applicant is approved for final adoption. An adoption contract is signed and the fee is paid after which time your new family member is yours to take home. If adopting a puppy too young for spay or neuter, a sterilization agreement must be signed requiring an additional $50 refundable deposit. Fees vary and range form $195 for most dogs, puppies $210 but $260 total with spay/neuter deposit where applicable and purebreds range from $210-$310. (Subject to change without notice)
PLEASE NOTE EFFECTIVE JUNE 30, 2008: OUR ADOPTION FEES WERE INCREASED BY $10 PER ADOPTION. WE APOLOGIZE FOR THIS NECESSITY BUT DUE TO CONTINIOUS INCREASES IN VET COSTS, FOOD AND ALL SUPPLIES OUR DOGS NEED WHILE WITH US THE COST TO THE RESCUE IS GREAT! DUE TO THE ECONOMY DONATIONS ARE NOT WHAT THEY COULD BE. AS A NON PROFIT RESCUE WE DEPEND ON DONATIONS TO HELP US KEEP OUR DOGS FULLY VETTED AND PROPERLY CARED FOR UNTIL THEIR FOREVER HOMES ARE FOUND. THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING AND SUPPORT!
**OTHER INFORMATION**
We make every effort to process each application in a timely manner. We are all volunteers and have jobs, and families as well. Usually the whole process can take about 5 days or less or more in some instances. Please be patient with us.
All our friends are fully vetted prior to placement in foster or adoptive homes including spay/neuter and vaccinations. The records for your new pet will be sent to you upon our receipt of the Contract and adoption fee by the foster.
We do not adopt on a first come first serve basis and sometimes we receive several applications for a particular dog. In those cases, we do our very best to choose the best suited home for that dog and family. We reserve the right to deny any adoption at our discretion. At this time, we are not adopting to out-of-state or Canadian applicants.
PLEASE NOTE: In most cases we have no background or history of our rescue dogs. Most of our dogs come to us as strays who ended up in the shelter or pound. Our information on each dog is what we learn of them while in foster care. If any information is given to us by the shelter, we include this in their Petfinder profile.
We are now offering microchipping for our dogs. Details to come! Please let us know if you would be interested in that option for your new pet!

Not ready to adopt just yet? Ever consider fostering a homeless shelter dog? Being a foster is a very rewarding experience for both you and the dog. We are always in need of loving qualified foster homes which allows us to save other "last day" dogs who otherwise would be put to death. All our dogs are spayed or neutered, brought up to date on their shots, and are given full vet exams prior to being placed in your home. We do our best to place our dogs with the right foster home and family to help ensure the best fit and experience possible for all involved. We provide the food and whatever else you will need to properly care for your foster dog while in your care, you just provide him/her with a loving home and heart. If fostering may be something you wish to know more about, please contact us and we will be more than happy to send you a Foster Application and Foster Responsibility form to begin the process which includes a vet check and home visit. Please read the application over carefully and fill it out completely. Please watch our Slideshow of all our dogs and puppies in need of foster homes, special needs and adoption. Check out our Petfinder doggie pages to read all about each of our furry friends!

We at Last Day rescue all the dogs we can when we can. Sometimes we get asked by shelters to take in a sick or injured dog. Sometimes it's not until we get these kids in our care that we find out that they are sick in some way~heartworm, parvo and anything from skin conditions to ear infections. We have treated all our sick dogs and all have recovered nicely and most are now in their forever homes!

~ HOW COULD YOU?~
By Jim Willis 2001
When I was a puppy, I entertained you with my antics and made you laugh. You called me your child, and despite a number of chewed shoes and a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend. Whenever I was "bad,"you'd shake your finger at me and ask "How could you?" -but then you'd relent, and roll me over for a belly rub. My housebreaking took a little longer than expected, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. I remember those nights of nuzzling you in bed and listening to your confidences and secret dreams, and I believed that life could not be anymore perfect. We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, stops for ice cream (I only got the cone because "ice cream is bad for dogs," you said), and I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.
Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. I waited for you patiently, comforted you through heartbreaks and disappointments, never chided you about bad decisions, and romped with glee at your home comings, and when you fell in love. She, now your wife, is not a "dog person"-still I welcomed her into our home, tried to show her affection, and obeyed her. I was happy because you were happy.
Then the human babies came along and I shared you excitement. I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them, too. Only she and you worried that I might hurt them, and I spent most of my time banished to another room, or to a dog crate. Oh, how I wanted to love them, but I became a "prisoner of love." As they began to grow, I became their friend. They clung to my fur and pulled themselves upon wobbly legs, poked fingers in my eyes, investigated my ears, and gave me kisses on my nose. I loved everything about them and their touch-because your touch was now so infrequent-and I would have defended them with my life if need be. I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and secret dreams, and together we waited for the sound of your car in the driveway.
There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that you produced a photo of me from your wallet and told them stories about me. These past few years, you just answered "yes" and changed the subject. I had gone from being "your dog" to "just a dog," and you resented every expenditure on my behalf. Now, you have a new career opportunity in another city, and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your "family," but there was a time when I was your only family.
I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal shelter. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said "I know you will find a good home for her."They shrugged and gave you a pained look. They understand the realities facing a middle-aged dog, even one with "papers." You had to pry your son's fingers loose from my collar as he screamed "No, Daddy! Please don't let them take my dog!" And I worried for him, and what lessons you had just taught him about friendship and loyalty, about love and responsibility, and about respect for all life. You gave me a good-bye pat on the head, avoided my eyes, and politely refused to take my collar and leash with you.
You had a deadline to meet and now I have one, too. After you left, the two nice ladies said you probably knew about your upcoming move months ago and made no attempt to find me another good home. They shook their heads and asked...."How could you?"
They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy schedules allow. They feed us, of course, but I lost my appetite days ago. At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you-that you had changed your mind-that this was all a bad dream ... or I hoped it would at least be someone who cared,..... anyone who might save me. When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for attention of happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate, I retreated to a far corner and waited.
I heard her footsteps as she came for me at the end of the day, and I padded along the aisle after her to a separate room. A blissfully quiet room. She placed me on the table and rubbed my ears, and told me not to worry. My heart pounded in anticipation of what was to come, but there was also a sense of relief. The prisoner of love had run out of days. As is my nature, I was more concerned about her. The burden which she bears weighs heavily on her, and I know that, the same way I knew your every mood. She gently placed a tourniquet around my foreleg as a tear ran down her cheek. I licked her hand in the same way I used to comfort you so many years ago. She expertly slid the hypodermic needle into my vein. As I felt the sting and the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily, looked into her kind eyes and murmured "How could you?" Perhaps because she understood my dogspeak, she said "I'm so sorry."She hugged me, and hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I went to a better place, where I wouldn't be ignored or abused or abandoned, or have to fend for myself-a place of love and light so very different from this earthly place.
And with my last bit of energy, I tried to convey to her with a thump of my tail that my "How could you?" was not directed at her. It was you, My Beloved Master, I was thinking of. I will think of you and wait for you forever. May everyone in your life continue to show you so much loyalty.
The End
A note from the author: If "How Could You?" brought tears to your eyes as you read it, as it did to mine as I wrote it, it is because it is the composite story of the millions of formerly owned pets who die each year in American and Canadian animal shelters. Anyone is welcome to distribute the essay for a noncommercial purpose, as long as it is properly attributed with the copyright notice. Please use it to help educate, on your websites, in newsletters, on animal shelter and vet office bulletin boards. Tell the public that the decision to add a pet to the family is an important one for life, that animals deserve our love and sensible care, that finding another appropriate home for your animal is your responsibility and any local humane society or animal welfare league can offer you good advice, and that all life is precious. Please do your part to stop the killing, and encourage adoption.
~TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR PET OWNERS~
1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be very painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want from me. Do not break my spirit with your temper, though I will always forgive you. Your patience and understanding will teach me more quickly those things you want me to learn.
3. Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for your kindness than mine. Don't be angry with me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. After all, you have your job, your friends, your entertainment. I have only you.
4. Speak to me often. Even if I don't understand all your words, I understand your voice when it's speaking to me. Your voice is the sweetest sound I ever hear, as you must know by my enthusiastic excitement when your footsteps fall upon my waiting ear.
5. Please take me inside when it's cold and wet. I'm a domestic animal and no longer am accustomed to the bitter elements. I ask for little more than your gentle hands petting me.
6. Keep my bowl filled with clean water; I cannot tell you when I'm thirsty. Feed me good food so that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to be by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to share with you my life, for that is what I live for. However you treat me, I'll never forget it.
7. Don't hit me. Remember, I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I am not getting the right food, I've been out in the sun too long, or my heart is getting old and weak.
9. Take care of me when I get old. You will grow old, too.
10. When I am very old, when I no longer enjoy good health, please do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having fun. Just see to it that my trusting life is taken gently. And be with me on that difficult journey when it is time to say "goodbye". Never say, "I can't bear to watch." Everything is easier for me when you are there. I will leave this earth knowing with my last breath that my fate was always safest in your hands.
Remember - I love you.
