The Friends of the Jefferson Animal Shelter is an all-volunteer (501)(c)(3) nonprofit organization and public charity. Our mission is to assist the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter to reduce euthanasia rates by providing the following programs, including but not limited to: home fostering, behavioral training and socialization, offsite pet adoptions, adoption and follow-up counseling, and spay/neuter assistance. Please note that all animals in our care are pulled from the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter.
Adoption Fees - Kittens $50 / Adults $25. This includes spay/neuter, FeLV/FIV test, vaccinations, microchip, and a bag of Science Diet Food
During May, adopt a black cat and receive a gift with your adoption!
We currently have the following programs in place:
Monthly Pet Adoption Days - Animals from the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter are brought to offsite locations each month by our volunteers. Many people find a visit to the shelter too stressful, so offsite Pet Adoption Days provide potential adopters an alternative place to meet the shelter animals.
The Kitten/Cat Fostering Program - Volunteers are needed to foster orphan kittens younger than 6 weeks, mother cats with litters younger than 6 weeks, and adult cats that may need more care than the shelter can offer. Volunteers take these animals into their home and provide the care and love they need. FJAS pays for food and veterinary expenses - volunteers are responsible for their care which includes socialization of the animal, vet visits, transportation to spay/neuter surgery, and bringing the animal to Pet Adoption Days. To date, over 2000 felines have graduated from our Kitten Fostering Program to be placed in loving homes.
The Dog/Puppy Fostering Program - Volunteers are needed to foster shelter dogs/puppies that may need more care than the shelter can offer. FJAS pays for food and veterinary expenses - volunteers are responsible for their care which includes socialization of the animal, vet visits, transportation to spay/neuter surgery (if needed), and bringing the animal to Pet Adoption Days.
Shelter Dog Socialization - This program provides shelter dogs with socialization, exercise and training.
Other Opportunities - Opportunities pop up now and then that we may need a volunteer for - Annual Pet Fest in the fall, fundraisers, mailings, spay/neuter efforts, etc.
