We now require that individuals surrendering guinea pigs give a monetary gift ,or gift card to Agri Feed, Walmart, or Kroger to help offset the cost of caring for them until they are adopted. A fee of $15.00 for single pigs and $25.00 for a pair will be collected when surrendering the guinea pigs. If you need a guinea pig, please feel free to contact us and we will find you just the right one. IF YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN FOSTERING PLEASE LET US KNOW.
We have a demo cage set up with two of our guinea pigs in it at Agri Feed and Pet Supply, at 5716 Middlebrook Pike!!! The animals there are available for adoption by contacting us. Agri-Feed is the only pet store in the Knoxville area that DOES NOT SELL ANIMALS!!
THANK YOU AGRI-FEED!!!
Who We Are
Knoxville Guinea Pig Rescue is a family run rescue that opened in June 2001 by Janet Adams and her three children.
Knoxville Guinea Pig Rescue began when in May, 2001, Janet and her family lost one of our little female guinea pigs. Wanting to provide her little cagemate with another companion, they decided to give a rescued piggie a home rather than buy one from a pet store. They had seen so many pet store animals who were sick and had parasites due to the conditions those pigs are bred and transported in from the guinea pig "mills". They had met the folks who ran a Guinea Pig Rescue in another city and began to realize the need for a rescue in our area. It didn't take long to decide that it was something that they could do!
Janet found out they were moving so in February, 2008, Susan and her family took over the rescue. We have 6 guinea pigs, Milo, Maggie, Jason, Patch, Mollie, Cody and two dogs, Ellie Mae and our newest edition Riley whom we got from Young WIlliams Animal Shelter..
Great news!!! I am proud to announce that Peggy Barron is now Co-cordinating the rescue with me. She brings 30 plus years of Guinea Pig experience with her. She alone has 14 of her own and has been fostering for KGPR for two years. Grady, her husband is affectionately known as the Guinea Pig Whisperer because of his unique talent at socializing guinea pigs.
As of February 1, 2009, we have taken in over 1000 Guinea Pigs. We only accept guinea pigs.
We have placed over 1000 Guinea Pigs in permanent homes in 7 1/2 years! Many of them had been abandoned at the local animal shelters or pet shops. Most were pets bought for children who eventually lost interest in them well before the end of their 5-8 year (or longer) lifetime. Due to this problem we will adopt as pets for children (over 6) ONLY if an adult is equally interested and realizes that the responsibility for this animal will ultimately be the adults. Many of our animals are adopted as pets for adults.
Adopting a friend
We require an application and interview to insure our animals go only to people committed to providing a safe, loving, and permanent home for them.
Our adoption contract requires that our animals will not be bred and will be housed indoors in an appropriate cage. Aquariums are not appropriate housing for Guinea Pigs due to the very small floor space and limited air flow. Wire bottom cages are too hard on tender little feet (piggies need to snuggle in soft bedding). They need to be provided with daily fresh water, hay, guinea pig pellets, vitamin C, and fresh fruits and vegetables.
We offer consultation on cage selection, care, vet referrals and ongoing support for our adoptive families.
Our adoption fees for guinea pigs are $30 for one, $40 for a pair , and $40.00 each for babies (3 months or less) or $65 for 'an adult paired with a baby (3 months or less). ALL OF OUR ADOPTABLE GUINEA PIGS ARE VET CHECKED AND TREATED FOR ANY HEALTH ISSUES BEFORE THEY ARE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION. The fee helps us with food, bedding, Veterinary care and medicines. This allows us to continue helping more animals, but doesn't begin to cover what we spend to help them. Additional donations of any kind are always needed and appreciated!
Thanks to Lovell Animal Hospital and Dr. Rosemary Jones of Seymour Veterinary Clinic for taking such good care of our guinea pigs.
Thanks to Petfinder for Ingrid Rice's nice graphic of a long haired guinea pig!
