UPDATE!!! Janet may be moving but her Knoxvile Guinea Pig Rescue is going to continue. My name is Susan Lewis and I have three daughters, 11, 9, and 7. We originally adopted 5 guinea pigs from Janet. My middle daughter asked if we could take over the rescue. What could I say? They are sooooo cute and we love having them around!!! How could I say no!?

We are very excited about this new chapter in our lives and look forward to continuing the great work that Janet and her family started. THANKS JANET!!!!!

VISIT OUR DEMO CAGE

We have a demo cage set up with two of our guinea pigs in it at Agri Feed and Pet Supply, at 5716 Middlebrook Pike!!! The animals there are available for adoption by contacting us. Agri-Feed is the only pet store in the Knoxville area that DOES NOT SELL ANIMALS!!

THANK YOU AGRI-FEED!!!

You can meet our guinea pigs (and other pets) here at the shelter or see our demo cage at Agrifeed and Pet Supply now! !

UPCOMING EVENTS!

Let Us Build You a Guinea Pig Cage!

We offer to build large, low cost cages to help provide the best quality of life for your piggies! Cages in stores are often WAY too small and very expensive! We recommend at least 4-6 square feet of space for one or two piggies, and an additional square foot or two for each additional pig. We are able to custom build your cage for from $20 to $40! You can see some great photos of these cages and more at www.cavycages.com!

Who We Are

Knoxville Guinea Pig Rescue is a family run rescue that opened in June 2001 by Janet Adams and her three children ages (now) 17, 16, and 11.

Knoxville Guinea Pig Rescue began when in May, 2001, Janet and her family lost one of our little female guinea pigs. Wanting to provide her little cagemate with another companion, they decided to give a rescued piggie a home rather than buy one from a pet store. They had seen so many pet store animals who were sick and had parasites due to the conditions those pigs are bred and transported in from the guinea pig "mills". They had met the folks who ran a Guinea Pig Rescue in another city and began to realize the need for a rescue in our area. It didn't take long to decide that it was something that they could do!

Janet found out they were moving so in February, 2008, Susan Lewis and her three daughters took over the rescue. We have 5 guinea pigs, Milo, Maggie, Jason, Patch, and Mollie and a dog, Ellie Mae.

As of March 2008, we have taken in 970 Guinea Pigs, 14 Chinchillas, 10 Degus, 1 Sugar Glider and 1 Hedgehog. We have placed 960 Guinea Pigs in permanent homes in 6 1/2 years! Many of them had been abandoned at the local animal shelters or pet shops. Most were pets bought for children who eventually lost interest in them well before the end of their 5-8 year (or longer) lifetime. Due to this problem we will adopt as pets for children (over 6) ONLY if an adult is equally interested and realizes that the responsibility for this animal will ultimately be the adults. Many of our animals are adopted as pets for adults.

Adopting a friend

We require an interview to insure our animals go only to people committed to providing a safe, loving, permanent home for them.

Our adoption contract requires that our animals will not be bred and will be housed indoors in an appropriate cage. Aquariums are not appropriate housing for Guinea Pigs due to the very small floor space and limited air flow. Wire bottom cages are too hard on tender little feet (piggies need to snuggle in soft bedding). They need to be provided with daily fresh water, hay, guinea pig pellets, vitamin C, and fresh fruits and vegetables.

We offer consultation on cage selection, care, vet referals and ongoing support for our adoptive families.

Our adoption fees for guinea pigs are $20 for one, or $30 for a pair of animals, to encourage a same sex cagemate for your pets when possible. Guinea Pigs that we have had neutered will be just $10.00 more. The fee helps us with food, bedding, Veterinary care and medicines. This allows us to continue helping more animals, but doesn't begin to cover what we spend to help them. Additional donations of any kind are always needed and appreciated!

Thanks to Petfinder for Ingrid Rice's nice graphic of a long haired guinea pig!
