Please come and visit our facility for more specific information on our pets. Our shelter is open admission which means that we receive from 10 - 75 dogs, cats, and/or pocket pets everyday. All of our adoptable animals need loving homes and good providers to take care of them. Remember, we receive new pets everyday! The pets are waiting to see your smiling faces and to be taken home to their new families.
Adopting a Friend:
Adopting a pet is an enormous decision! Remember these pets will live between 5 - 18 years and they need more than just food and water. Dogs, cats and rabbits need attention, exercise, grooming, and training. Do you have the resources, energy and finances to own a pet? Also, are you willing to do the 'work' that is necessary to get your pet, home, and family to become one? Our facility receives new pets daily, so please check the website and come visit as often as possible to find your new friend. Due to the fact that we are an open admission shelter (take all animals) municipality shelter, accepting all strays and owner surrenders, we manage over 8,000 dogs and cats every year compared to 200 - 1,000 as a limited admission or better known as a "no kill" shelter.
Petfinder Updates:
We attempt to update Petfinder several days every week, but please visit our shelter as we are moving new pets into our adoption area ALL DAY LONG!

Huntsville Animal Services is operated by the City of Huntsville. As a traditional municipal shelter, we accept all strays and owner turn-ins from the City of Huntsville and Madison County. By law we must "house or board" stray pets for three to five days. After the "holding period," a decision regarding the "disposition" of the animal is made. The pet may be made available for adoption, be released to a rescue organization or unfortunately, may be euthanized due to space, temperament, or health reasons. Pet overpopulation forces us to make difficult decisions. Euthanasia is a daily function of our organization. Our ultimate goal is to eliminate the need for euthanasia. We strive to encourage responsible pet ownership and impress upon future pet owners the importance of having their pets spayed or neutered in order to control pet overpopulation. Please, if you have pets or know someone who does, help us stop the killing by having your own pets sterilized and encouraging others to do the same. Why volunteer??Volunteering, is a way to impact an animals life in a positive way and enjoy yourself at the same time. There are several ways you can help the animals. There are off-site adoptions, special events, washing/bathing animals, walking and playing with the animals, helping people looking for a new pet, checking lost and found, updating Petfinder, etc. And when the day is all done, if one animal is going to a good, loving forever home it is worth it all - good and bad - because there is nothing like the feeling of knowing you have changed at least one animals life. So no matter, even if you want to only volunteer occasionally or if you want to volunteer a lot, stop down and pick up a volunteer packet and find out how you can help change an animals life.
Donations:
Even if you can't adopt right now, you can still help the animals. The volunteer program needs lots of items to help our pets get adopted! We need laundry detergent, hand sanitizer, dog and cat shampoo, dog and cat cologne, old towels and blankets, and toys and treats for the animals. Any of these items can be dropped off on weekdays at the shelter from 9 to 5 or on Saturdays from 9 to 3. Monetary donations are also accepted and can be brought to the shelter or mailed to the address below. Be sure to note that the donation is intended for the volunteer program. Also, if you love to knit, crochet, or quilt, you can help with the Snuggles project! Just go to the Hugs for Homeless Animals website at www.h4ha.org/snuggles to learn more. Thanks!
