Who We Are

Hug-a-Bunny Rabbit Rescue, Inc. is a small 501 (c)(3) organization that rescues, rehabilitates, and re-homes rabbits in need. We started out by helping other volunteer organizations, but quickly realized that there were limited resources for rabbits in our area. Hug-a-Bunny Rabbit Rescue, Inc. does extensive volunteer work associated with our local animal shelter. Most of our rescued rabbits come from this location.

Hug-a-Bunny was created through true ambition to try to make a difference and save a few lives, but we quickly surpassed that goal! We now have a working network with organizations in our area and miles away to best support our rabbits. Each rabbit that comes into our care is treated like our own until they find their "forever home!"

We aim to educate the public about rabbits. We've found that many people don't know what amazing companions rabbits can be. Most are not aware that rabbits are easily litterbox-trained and crave attention and love. All Hug-a-Bunnies are litterbox-trained while they are in foster care!

All rabbits in our care are spayed/neutered when they enter our rescue. All medical expenses come straight from our pockets and from kind donations. Hug-a-Bunny runs solely on volunteers for the care of these animals. Since we don't have a physical location, all of our rabbits live in foster care across Northern NJ and NY.

Adopting a Hug-a-Bunny

The rabbits in our care are wonderful creatures (of course we're partial) and we would be willing to elaborate on any of their qualities if you feel that you need more information! There is something special and unique about each of our rabbits. Please take your time and read about each of the Hug-a-Bunnies, even if you aren't quite ready to adopt. You never know, a Hug-a-Bunny might steal your heart, as they have done to ours! And yes, all of our rabbits ARE huggable!

We will adopt to indoor homes in the tri-state area. Please take a look at our rabbits to see if any of them are the right match for you! If you don't see your match, email us and we can tell you about rabbits in our care that are not yet posted online. There is a $50 adoption donation, which allows us to rescue and spay/neuter more rabbits! This fee offsets the money we spend rescuing these rabbits.

If you are interested in any of the rabbits on our site, please email hugabunny@gmail.com for more information and an adoption application. Please note that all Hug-a-Bunnies are adopted to indoor homes only. Once we recieve an inquiry, will get back to you quickly!

Please keep in mind that we may have several people interested in the same rabbit at one time, and adoptions are based on the most fitting home for a bun, as we always have their best interest in mind. We also have other rabbits that aren't currently listed on Petfinder since they aren't yet spayed or neutered or aren't yet in a Hug-a-Bunny foster home.

Donate to Hug-a-Bunny!!!!!!

Please consider helping out our rescued rabbits by making a generous donation through Paypal. Any donation helps, even $1, $5, or $10! It costs $170 for each spay surgery and $130 for each neuter. We also have regular vet visits and daily living costs. Please donate so we can continue helping abandoned rabbits! You do NOT need to sign up for a Paypal account to donate. Our rescued rabbits appreciate your donations more than you know! Thank you from the Hug-a-Bunnies!

OUR 190th ADOPTION (and 8th for 2010)!

Thanks to all of your support, we were able to attain another goal that we never thought possible. Recently, we had our 190th adoption! This was a huge accomplishment for us and we're so proud! Most importantly, we're happy for all of our 190 rabbits who have found amazing "forever homes!" Each one has touched our hearts and will remain there forever. Take a minute to browse through our "Hoppy Tails" section to see all of the amazing animals who have been lucky enough to find permanent homes! Our amazing Sunflower was our 190th adoption. After being dropped at a shelter shortly after Easter of 2008, she lived in a foster home for the past two years waiting for the perfect home to come along! Luckily, Loren and her family opened up their homes to our Sunflower! We're so happy for her!

Congratulations to Our Recent Adoptions!

Our New Hug-a-Bunny Video!

Hot off the press! We have a new amazing video that captures the adorable faces of some of our Hug-a-Bunnies! Most of the rabbits featured in this video already have permanent loving homes. You may recognize Apple (originally found taped inside a shoebox), Bug (who has head tilt) or Button (who is partially blind). The only rabbit in this video who is still on the search for a loving home is Sprinkles, who is a wonderful girl! She's the English Spot in the video (with the HUGE bowl of greens and on the bed) and is still looking for a wonderful family to come along and scoop her up! A heartfelt thank you to Hug-a-Bunny volunteer Jessica who has donated her time to help our bunnies on many occasions, but nothing could be more special than this video, which captures the lighthearted family vision of Hug-a-Bunny!

Foster Homes Needed!

Hug-a-Bunny Rabbit Rescue, Inc. is constantly in need of foster homes! If you think you can open up your home to a rabbit, for a long or short-term placement, please let us know. Foster parents are given a cage (unless you have one) and all of the essential supplies needed to foster one of our rabbits. We provide any never-ending support to you as you provide a temporary home for our rabbits. Hug-a-Bunny is responsible for any and all medical care of the rabbits in our rescue. We will accept foster homes in NJ and NY!

Since we don't have a physical location, our ability to rescue rabbits depends on the foster homes we have. You can personally help to save a rabbit in need! Imagine how gratifying it will feel when you personally play a role in the rescue of a rabbit!

Thank you to our foster homes....we simply couldn't do it without you!

We would love to outfit all of our rabbits in these wonderful creations. If you'd like to make a donation towards one of them, simply mail us a check with Leith Petwerks Abode written on it, and we'll put it towards our big purchase. Our bunnies thank you!

Our Adoptable Rabbits

Looking to Surrender Your Furry Family Member?

Due to our extensive work with local and county animal shelters, as well as our ongoing surrender intake, we are running at our capacity. While surrendering a rabbit to us is still possible, you may have a wait of at least 30 to 60 days before we will have room for your rabbit. We will consider emergency situations on a case-by-case basis. If you’re willing to “foster” your own rabbit for us while they look for a home, we can at least post them on our Petfinder site for some more exposure!

However, we urge you to do everything you can to make your rabbit work within it’s current home. It is very stressful on rabbits to have to leave everything they’ve known and enter into a world of an uncertain future. We can try our best to help you modify your current situation. Sometimes something simple can make a big difference, like litterbox training your rabbit! Fortunately, with Hug-a-Bunny Rabbit Rescue, Inc., we provide each and every rabbit a loving environment until they find their permanent home. However, we don’t have enough room to take in every rabbit and we can do our best to assist you in any way possible.

If you would like to join our waiting list, we’ll ask you to fill out our Surrender Form and include and all information about your rabbit. This includes being able to provide a current photo of your animal and a description of its personality, age, and health. Please email us at hugabunny@gmail.com for more details.

The Egg Harbor Rescue of 2008

After being scouted out for many years, a backyard breeder in Egg Harbor Township, NJ was caught mistreating and neglecting 57 rabbits in his backyard. The rabbits were all living in dumpster-like creations, with crowded conditions and with little to no food or water. Many news stations were covering this on the news and all of the rabbits were seized from the location. Luckily, many rescues and shelters stepped forward to save these rabbits, and none of them had to be put to sleep.

In April of 2008, we were happy to welcome Bryce, Sundance and Forest (a bonded pair), and Echo as part of the Hug-a-Bunny family. Sadly, Forest passed away shortly after coming into our rescue and Sundance (now Pickle) was left alone. Luckily, Sundance was sponsored and adopted by the lovely Beth and is now living a life of happiness! On a happier note, our Bryce was adopted by the wonderful Julia! Bryce was the center of many news productions because the only had one eye, one ear, and half of a nose left- which all happened during his time in Egg Harbor. Bryce is now living a life of luxury and is very loved! The last rabbit adopted from this rescue effort was our amazing Echo. Incredibly, Echo was the friendliest of all of the Egg Harbor bunnies and is doing great in his new home! Congratulations to Echo and the other Egg Harbor Rescue bunnies!

Thank you for visiting our site! We appreciate all of your support.
