Meet Rocco. Rocco is the extreme example of a returned dog. Rocco was adopted as an adorable puppy. There were three of them. Unfortunately, Rocco was returned through no fault of his own. He has been with us over a year. His biggest problem is that he barks at strangers like most dogs do at their front door. It is only because he has been with us so long and he considers the shelter home. Rocco needs someone that will love and work with him.

HELP US RAISE FUNDS FOR OUR DOG SHELTER. FUNDS MAY BE SENT TO:
We built a new dog shelter in 2006. It was named the "Donald Mateer Facility". This was in memory of the major donor of this facility. He and his wife Charlotte helped us achieve our dream. We are now ready to expand. Our facility is not large enough to handle rescue/shelter/adoption in Westmoreland County. Dogs in Westmoreland County die because of a lack of space. We are going to build an additional dog kennel. We take dogs from animal control, kill shelters, and humane cases weekly. We have the only full time Humane Society Police Officer in the county. Please help us build are new kennel so we may continue saving dogs. YOU MAY STILL PURCHASE GOLDEN PLAQUES IN THE FOLLOWING AMOUNTS: $250 - CAGE PLAQUE, $5,000 - ROOM PLAQUE, $100,000 WING PLAQUE. THE PROJECT IS ONGOING.
HEY! BACK UP! DID YOU READ ABOUT OUR DOG SHELTER MARKETING CAMPAIGN?
UPCOMING EVENT - Watch for rabies/distemper shot clinics in the warm weather. During the warm weather months, we will be holding shot clinics twice monthly.
Would you like to make a donation? Help us support our feline rescues and continue building our 30 capacity dog shelter. Go to www.Networkforgood.org and type in Humane Society of Westmoreland County. Thank you to all of our generous supporters.
Remember, fundraising and donations are our means of existence.
Adopting a Puppy or Dog? We will need to know the following? Have you ever owned a large breed dog? What provisions do you have for puppy/dog during the day if you work? What exercise provisions do you have for your pet? (Daily walking, fenced yard, etc.)Do you own your home? MOST OF OUR RETURNS ARE HOUSING ISSUES. AS A RESULT OF THIS FACT, WE ARE TIGHTENING OUR REQUIREMENTS FOR ADOPTIONS OF DOGS TO PEOPLE RENTING. IF YOU ARE PLANNING A TRIP TO THE HUMANE SOCIETY, IT IS BEST TO INQUIRE ABOUT OUR POLICIES BEFORE MAKING THE TRIP. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT OF REFUSAL OF AN APPLICATION
POLICY STATEMENT - As devoted animal lovers and rescuers, we deeply regret those we have to turn away. All no-kill shelters face this criticism. We can only accept what our facility will safely accommodate. Our animals receive the highest quality of veterinary care at great expense to our organization. We have successfully rescued and adopted 2600 cats/kittens and with limited facilities 1400 dogs/puppies. Overcrowding benefits no one, neither human or beast. Overcrowding creates medical problems that can close a shelter either temporarily or permanently. We have to constantly guard against feline leukemia, aids, panleukopenia, ringworm, parvo virus to name a few. Who do we benefit if we overcrowd? Place the blame of unrescued animals where it belongs 1) the person who originally abandoned a companion animal 2) Those that see shelters as petstores and only want certain colors or ages 3) Those that start the current of unrest in communities through their lack of understanding. The blame does not rest with shelters. We offer wholehearted thankfullness to those that work with shelters and foster cats and kittens until shelters have room. ALWAYS REMEMBER, ADOPTION MAKES ROOM FOR A RESCUE!

Come to a shelter in the "Spirit of Rescue". Does it really matter if the puppy is 5 months of age or 7 weeks? How many times do we hear "I wanted a little one". What about the poor dog that may be 1 year of age. He is too often overlooked. Older puppies are easier to housetrain. The kittens face the scrutiny of what color they are. Long Haired kittens get adopted before short haired kittens. Orange, White, and Buff get adopted before Black and Tabby kittens. The adult cats find themselves in a lonely spot. Everyone wants a kitten. Rescuing isn't about size, color, age; it is about finding a new companion to share your love and home with.
PLEASE DO NOT ADOPT A PUPPY IF YOU CANNOT PROVIDE THAT FOREVER HOME THAT THEY DESERVE. Our puppies go quickly. While you are emailing and asking questions, someone else is adopting. We are not asking for your to make hasty decisions, but please be aware of our position. We are here to find these pups forever homes. If the right adopter visits the shelter; they will adopt. We cannot hold puppies. These are rescued animals and often we do not have additional information.

I understand that I am not purchasing a dog. I am entering into an adoption agreement with the Humane Society of Westmoreland County. I can afford future veterinary care. I have a plan for puppy care. I will take my puppy to a puppy class. I will utilize the Humane Society instructional dog obedience when the dog is of age. I understand that a dog coming to a new home needs special considerations until they adjust.
