Who We Are :

The Humane Society of Nelson County was incorporated in June 1994. We provide clean, safe shelter, food, health care for homeless pets, surrendered or stray. Our volunteers add love and attention that these pets need.

We are currently able to offer no/low cost spay/neuter to people on public assistance, disability, or with other financial difficulties or people who are feeding many strays or feral cats. Call 502-349-2082 for more information.

We visit schools and community groups to encourage kindness to animals and teach responsible pet ownership.



Adopting a Friend :

Dogs, puppies 8 weeks or older, cats, and kittens 8 weeks or older are available for adoption. Some have been surrendered for various reasons by their owners; many are stray or lost animals who were not claimed by owners.

Requirements: You must be 18 or older. If you rent, you must have your landlord's permission to have a pet.

Fees: We charge $100 for a dog or puppy, and $60 for a cat or kitten. We do not sell animals for a profit; we place them in adoptive homes. The purpose of the fee is to pay for spay/neuter surgery, required for every animal adopted from our shelter, and to help with other expenses like vaccinations.

The fee includes:
(1) Spay/neuter surgery, done before release to new owner
(2) First set of shots to protect the animal from common diseases such as Distemper, Parvo, Rabies (if the animal is 4 months of age or older), etc.
(3) Worming for hookworms and roundworms
(4) Feline leukemia virus testing in cats
(5) Microchipping to give your new pet a better chance of being returned to you if it goes astray

We are in need of members! Membership in the Humane Society is a major way to continue funding our shelter. Below is a listing of our current, tax-deductible fees:

Single/Family $25.00
Corporate $100.00
Benefactor $500.00

Come Visit Us! :

We are located at 2391 New Haven Road which is at the rear of the Nelson County Fairgrounds property. New Haven Road is 31E South; you will be going toward New Haven and Hodgenville. About one half mile after you cross over or exit the Bluegrass Parkway, you will turn left into the Fairgrounds (there is a sign and the entrance is directly across from Fit Kids Gymnasium). Follow the paved, then gravel, road back till you see a cement block building on the right.

Our Adoption Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.



ONLINE ADOPTION APPLICATION FORM

To adopt an animal, you must be at least 18 years of age and have identification showing your present address. If you rent, you must have the consent of your landlord. 

The following information is requested in order to help you select a pet most compatible with your family and lifestyle. Our number one priority is to place a pet in a permanent, responsible home where the pet will be a valued family member. The Humane Society of Nelson County reserves the right to refuse adoption if determined to be in the best interest of the animal and/or the person(s) involved.
