Who We Are:

Harmony Haven, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing quality care for homeless cats and dogs, finding suitable adoptive placements for those animals who are healthy and socialized, and educating the community about responsible pet guardianship. Harmony Haven is the ONLY no kill shelter in Vigo County. We get no funding from the city or county. All operations and animal care if funded strictly by kind donations from people like you. Harmony Haven is modeled after other privately funded no kill cat and dog sanctuaries in the U.S. No kill sanctuaries offer an alternative to more traditional shelters, which kill approximately 30,000 cats and dogs every day, seven days a week. Currently, there are more than 700 sanctuaries nationwide, one dating as far back as 1907. Animals are cared for by volunteers and a dedicated staff, including a veterinarian. All animals brought to Harmony Haven will be spayed or neutered, and will be available for adoption into approved homes. By providing a safe, happy home for animals that would otherwise be left to suffer a lonely death, Harmony Haven will provide a humane alternative for the increasing number of stray cats and dogs.

Working with other organizations:

Harmony Haven works with other reputable rescue organizations to help find the animals homes. We do this because if we can create open space by adopting or utilizing rescue for an animal, that is another space that a very needy animal can have and be safe. If you are a rescue organization and would like to help our shelter, please feel free to email us for details. Together we can make a difference!

We are open BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.
Call 812-535-3819 between 3:30 and 5:30 Monday thru Saturday.

Why Spay and Neuter Animals?

Spaying and Neutering is much less expensive, emotionally and financially, than euthanasia. Remember cats can become pregnant at four months and while nursing; they can be safely spayed and neutered as early as six weeks. The younger the animal at the time of surgery, the faster they heal. Contrary to popular myth, it is not healthy for dogs or cats to have one litter first before being "fixed". It robs them of vital nutrients and strains their bodies, and greatly increases their risks for developing breast cancer later. Most animals first become pregnant when they are too young to physically support it. Please also consider that with hundreds of animals being killed yearly at shelters everywhere, and it's just wrong to add any more--even if you sincerely believe you can find "good" homes. If you're that good at finding "good" homes, PLEASE volunteer to help a animal shelter place their poor unwanted animals.

OVERPOPULATION STATISTICS

In six years, one female dog and her offspring can be the source of 67,000 puppies. In just seven years, one female cat and her young can produce from 370,000 to 420,000 kittens. Every day in the United States, about 70,000 puppies & kittens are born, compared to about 11,000 human births. In order for every pet in this country to have a home, each and every person would have to own 6 dogs and 9 cats. U.S. taxpayers spend approximately $2,000,000,000 (TWO BILLION dollars) every year to round-up, house, kill and dispose of homeless animals. Approximately 50% to 65% of all animals taken into shelters nationwide have to be euthanized for lack of space. Estimates range from a very conservative 3,000,000 to a more likely 11,000,000 pets are destroyed annually for lack of homes. Less than 5% of shelter budgets, on average, are spent on pro-active programs which prevent tomorrow's animal from becoming casualties. Sexually intact dogs and cats top the list of pets who are most likely to be relinquished. Spay-Neuter has been identified by all national organizations and leaders in animal welfare as the solution to end the homeless pet crisis. Pet overpopulation is a result of the irresponsible behavior of humans; animals are just doing what comes naturally! As long as the number of puppies and kittens born far exceeds the number of humans born, there will never be enough homes for all the animals. As a result, millions of healthy, loving cats, dogs, kittens and puppies face early deaths as a form of animal control. Others are left to fend for themselves against automobiles, the elements, animals and cruel humans. What can you do to stop the suffering? Spay and neuter your pets!
