ANGELS OF RESCUE FUND
Angel lost her 2 yr battle with cancer April 14, 2006. She came to rescue in 2004 from an abusive home and after finding out she had cancer, her foster parents couldn't bear to part with her. They loved her for 2 long years - the best of her life.
In honor Angel's life, we have set up the Angels of Rescue Fund. Donations received in this fund are designated to care for sick or injured dogs we would otherwise have to turn away due to the high cost of vet bills. This fund will enable us to allow them into our program, care for them & find loving homes. If you'd like to make a donation of any amount in honor of Angel to the Angels of Rescue Fund please send a check made payable to EGSPC Rescue to:
EGSPC Rescue Program
P.O. Box 6931
Hillsborough, NJ 08844
Please reference "Angel" on the Memo line of your check. Thank you for your support & for caring to make a difference in the life of a GSP in need of a little TLC & a whole lot of love.
KURANDA DOG BED DONATIONS

IS A GSP THE BREED FOR YOU?
Anyone considering making a GSP part of their family must consider the HIGH ENERGY needs of the breed. They require stimulating exercise on a daily basis and consistent obedience training. Do not expect a dog that just lies around. If their energy needs are not met, they can become destructive in the house. MOST GSPs are surrendered to us because of their high energy level. In many of those cases the family brought a GSP into their lives without fully understanding the exercise requirements of the breed. Consequently, they could not meet those needs & sought our help in placing the dog in a new home. GSPs are a hunting breed with HIGH PREY DRIVES. They can become easily distracted and chase squirrels, birds and other small animals. Thus, GSPs are not particularly reliable off leash and are best in a home with secure fencing. GSPs also love to be close to their families and do not do well in homes when they are left alone for excessively long periods of time each day. Ideal placements are with families who can provide the animal with love, attention, training, daily exercise and most importantly make him a part of their every day lives.
Please visit www.gspca.org
for additional information on the breed to help you determine whether or not this breed is right for you.
CONSIDERING ADOPTION?
Before you fill out our adoption application, please read the following requirements and make sure you can agree to them. These are very important to your new GSP as well as EGSPC Rescue. We are a rescue organization. We are not a shelter. We rescue dogs from shelters and homes where they are unwanted, or their families cannot care for them. That means we want them to be safe and happy forever and ever and we want to know that they are. We care about them like they're our children and care for them until they find a home. So we love them just about as much as their new families do.
KEEPING IN TOUCH: You know how you send Aunt Mary pictures of the kids during the holidays or how you jot a note to Aunt Mary to tell her how little Tommy got an A in History class? EGSPC Rescue wants to be Aunt Mary. We want you to constantly send us updates FOREVER! We always want to know about how wonderful everything is. We know sometimes people say "Keep in touch" and don't really mean it. We really do mean it.
Along these lines, if you have any kinds of problems or issues you need help with, we ALWAYS want to hear from you. We will do our best to help you or steer you in the direction of finding help. Don't let it get to the point of "I have to give up the dog." Call us or e-mail us. There is no such thing as calling too much. The only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked.
MOVING: It is extremely important that if you move, you let us know where you are. Please email your new contact information to us at
GSPrescueNJ@hotmail.com or call Rayna at 973-580-3997. We need to keep our records updated. Besides, Aunt Mary likes to send out newsletters from time to time. Also, if someone finds your dog and calls us, we need to know how to find you to return your dog. Remember, your dog is microchipped and wears a Home Again tag registered to EGSPC Rescue. So, if he or she is lost, we will get a call.
HOME AGAIN TAG: It is important that the Home Again tag remain on the dog FOREVER. Sometimes people remove them because the dog is now theirs. What they don't realize is how often that tag has found a dog's way home.
All too often people contact us and say "I found a dog with this tag." If the dog had no tag, he could not go home. If the dog had only your ID tag and no one was home at your house, the dog could go to a shelter or be released again. We've seen both happen. We've also seen cases where people were out looking for the dog and the finder calls us. We look up the information and send the dog home. If you keep the Home Again tag on along with your ID tag, then people have two places to call.
For some reason, some people think we won't give back their dogs and, therefore, remove the tag. Yes, we will! We are a rescue. We try to find homeless dogs homes, not homes for dogs who already have them! We understand dogs sometimes get away from the owners. They've gotten away from our foster homes, too, on occasion. We WILL give you back your dog, and it is important they keep the tag on their collars so they can be found.
ADJUSTMENT PERIOD: There is an adjustment period. You have to be patient & understand that adjustment period. If you think you can't be patient, it's not fair to you or the dog to pursue this adoption. If you are willing to give the dog the time & effort he/she deserves, then this will be one of the greatest blessings & rewards you have ever experienced.
So,
►Will you call us if you have problems before it gets to the point of no return?
►Will you keep in touch with updates and pictures/stories/visits?
►Will you let us know when you move and give us your new address/phone number?
►Will you keep the Home Again tag on your dog forever?
►Will you be patient and understanding through the adjustment period?
If your answer to each of the following questions is a resounding yes, you are ready to adopt a new family member!
To start the adoption process, please e-mail
GSPrescueNJ@hotmail.com and we will send you an Adoption Application. Your application must be approved in order to be referred for adoption of any dog in our care. All applicants are screened, a home visit is done and a vet and/ or other references are requested. Since a home visit is required, we cannot adopt long distance. We follow this protocol in an attempt to match the most suitable home for each GSP in light of its health, personality, behavior and other factors. Sometimes it will take a few days before you hear from someone. We do our best to contact potential adopters within 48 hours, but it is not always possible. Please be patient. An adoption fee is required. ALL of the dogs adopted through the EGSPC Rescue Program are spayed/neutered before placement, no exceptions. They also go to their new homes fully vaccinated, heartworm checked, and microchipped. All funds received are used to benefit rescued and future rescued GSPs.
Get Involved, VOLUNTEER!!
We are in a great need of FOSTER HOMES. We are often forced to board the dogs due to the lack of foster homes. This is a tremendous financial burden on our rescue, not to mention the stress it causes for the dogs. Boarding the dogs depletes our funds very quickly and the lack of funds will impact our ability to save needy GSP's in the future. Foster homes have saved many GSP's over the years and are a critical part of our success as a rescue group. A foster home provides a loving and stable environment and is a place where the dog can live until he or she is adopted.
If you are experienced with the breed or other high energy breeds, live in NJ and have the time, space & energy to foster a GSP in your home until a permanent home is found PLEASE consider giving a great new start to a GSP! (Fenced in yard is a must). It is a wonderful experience to watch how they blossom and thrive in a loving home environment. Just think, you'll be helping a GSP who may not otherwise have a chance. How wonderful to know you had a part in saving the life of a homeless dog! Fostering is also a great way to get to know the breed before you decide to adopt.
While in shelters, GSPs usually suffer from shelter stress which makes them seem unadoptable & potential families pass them right by, this is why fostering is so important. If you're interested in fostering and giving the gift of a new beginning to a needy GSP please contact us at
GSPrescueNJ@hotmail.com .
Would you like to help GSPs in need, but don't have a lot of time to give? We are always in need of volunteers to help with all aspects of the rescue effort, and much of the work we do does not take up a lot of time at all. Of course, foster homes are always needed, but even if you cannot commit to fostering a GSP, there are MANY other things you can do to help needy GSPs in your area. Perhaps you only have an hour to spare now and then. We can always use help with home visits and transportation. In addition, when a GSP is in a shelter, we need a volunteer to visit their local shelter to identify and evaluate the dog or simply take a few digital photos for the Petfinder listing. There are many ways to help! Contact
GSPrescueNJ@hotmail.com for more information & to receive a Volunteer Application Form. A few hours of your time can mean forever to a homeless GSP!
Who We Are
The Eastern German Shorthaired Pointer Club, Inc.(EGSPC) is an active dog club with members primarily from New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. EGSPC members run the Rescue Program, under club auspices. We are a small group of VOLUNTEERS dedicated to finding homes for lost or surrendered German Shorthaired Pointers (GSPs). As there are other dedicated GSP rescue groups in NY, PA and MD, we focus our efforts in the state of NJ, while working cooperatively to help GSPs in eastern PA and southern NY. GSPs in our program come to us from many different situations, but most come from animal shelters where they were found as strays or were abandoned, or they are surrendered directly to us by their owners. In the case of an owner surrender we do our best to help the owner work through the problems they may be having with their GSP before making the final decision to surrender their dog to us.
About the German Shorthaired Pointer
The German Shorthaired Pointer is a member of the Sporting Group and was first recognized by the AKC in 1930. He is a medium-size, versatile hunter and an all purpose gun dog capable of high performance in field and water. He is even-tempered, friendly, intelligent and a loyal family companion that is very willing to please. Color can range from solid liver to a bright white body with a liver head. There are also black and white or black and white ticked GSPs. Shorthairs may have blazes or may have solid liver heads, they can be ticked (small flecking with white background), ticked with large patches, or roan (such fine ticking they appear almost solid colored). Customarily GSPs have tails docked at a few days of age, but we occasionally get some into rescue where this is not done.
